I don't mind if we don't win this one, but I really hope the selectors are looking long and hard at whether Guptill (for the moment anyway) and van Wyk are really up to it... and while it worked, how can a team that can't score runs go into a test with 5 specialist batsmen??? And where McCullum actually fits best

Astle's action looks weak, but ball seems to come out ok, I'd perservere with him ahead of Dave Patel...

Big pluses really are Southee (finally) and Boult (not sure why everyone was raving about Wagner in the first place, but boult is quality)...

Hopefully at some stage we end up with something like:

Opener 1 - which might well be Peter Fulton at the moment
McCullum
Williamson
Taylor
Flynn
Ryder (I'd have Ryder at 6 if Watling is wk, Flynn at 6 if Ronchi is)
Watling/Ronchi
Astle
Bracewell
Southee
Boult

I'm pretty sure if you ask Daniel Flynn where he wants to bat, he'd say 'open'.

I'd play him there against SA, Guptill needs to stay home and play four day cricket for Auckland.

Southee & Boult have the potential to be the best new ball combination in the world.

I'd have Watling as the keeper in South Africa, but when Ronchi becomes available he goes straight into the team. We need some explosiveness around 6-7 imo. There is room for both in the team when Ronchi becomes available.

That;s my thinking with Ryder at 6 and Watling at 7... we need some firepower...

Not sure what Flynn would say, but I'd have him in my team, we need a fighter, and he'll get big scores at some stage

I'd still persevere with Guptill. He's got the talent to be the best batsman in this side, I just don't think the opening slot is best for him. I'd have him at 3 and take a punt and open with Ryder.

McCullum
Ryder
Guptill
Taylor
Williamson
Flynn
Watling
Vettori / Patel / Astle / Nethula
Bracewell / Milne
Southee
Boult / Wagner

Sorry Jimmy Franklin but no more test cricket for you.

Good test match thus far from NZ. Having said that they'll now lose their last 8 wickets for 60 and be crushed by lunch tomorrow.

On Daniel Flynn, listened to Martin Crowe on radiosport the other day. He said when Flynn was put back into play opener, he mentally thought his footwork had to be quicker and he had to change his pick up technique again. Crowe told him that was nonsense. Precise, assertive footwork works in the middle order just as well as an opener.

As for Guptill, excellent talent, but, again Crowe makes sense. He reckons Guptill's pick up is far too high and he loses control of the bat swing. Says for a man of his size, a pick up of no higher than the stumps is fine and allows the bat to come down straight, and to be in position and still to hit the ball. He just needs to go away and score centuries for Auckland. Watling should be in the team as a specialist bat or the keeper, to not be on tour to me is baffling given his recent international form. Ronchi for Van Wyck (I for the record think Van Wyck is a fairly good player and a very tidy keeper), and Watling for Guptill, and Ryder for Astle would make the team a lot stronger. Vettori back in for Patel, and the other position to be ummed and ahhed over is Bracewell or Wagner. Interesting to see Adam Milne coming along nicely for CD as well, which is good given the guys obvious pace.

Another player I guess who would start to come into consideration... Colin Munro. Where'd this bloke come from? Slammed 260 not out at better than a run a ball. Thats some fair going against an attack with Mark Gillespie and the Englishman Woakes. Interesting to see Carl Cacopha's younger brother hit 160 odd as well.

Vettori's finished as far as i'm concerned. I'd rather stick with Patel tbh.

Guptill can stay until they find someone better. Peter Fulton :lol::lol: don't even go there.

Milne could come into consideration. We have a bit of competition in the bowling ranks.

Hopefully it's now evident to everyone that van Wyk and #6 isn't a sensible combination

I would have laughed at Fulton too, but what he's doing at the moment warrants consideration... and Guptill is becoming embarrassing against anythinghalf decent

If we were to make a change to the batting lineup I would open with Flynn and put Ryder in the middle order, otherwise it stays the same for me.

still 35+ overs left today. 340 ahead.

bat for another 20 overs(if you can) and then have an hour or so at them tonight.

declaration...The lankans need 363 from 128 overs.

Smart move from Taylor. Last thing he wants is two spent opening bowlers from holding up the batting.

Substitute Dave with Nethula (i think they need to persevere with him)
Nichol or Flynn opening.

Bring Brownle Worker or Cachopa into the Middle order.

Out of Watling or Van Wyk? Van Wyk is defo the better keeper. Watling defo the better bat and more than adequate as a keeper....IMO Watling

At least we know that this game will actually make 5 days ... strange for the Black Caps (white flags)
