3rd ASHES TEST: Australia v England at Perth, Dec 16-20 2010

Rejects recalled as selectors try to halt downward spiral

A LACK of depth in Australian cricket will be highlighted today with selectors expected to recall four players who have been dropped during the past two Ashes series to save the side.
Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus, axed after the first Test this year, Nathan Hauritz, who was dumped for the fifth Ashes Test last year, and Phillip Hughes, dropped after the second Test last year, could be relied upon to turn Australia's fortunes against England in Perth next week.
Hauritz is favoured to oust young spinner Xavier Doherty, Johnson and Hilfenhaus are expected to return after the fruitless search for wickets in Adelaide, while Hughes comes in for Simon Katich, who will play no further part in the series after tearing a ligament in his Achilles tendon.

Steve Smith is another likely replacement for No.6 batsman Marcus North, although the young NSW all-rounder has never played in an Ashes Test.
Should the other four play at the WACA Ground, they must not only defy their own demons but transform the woeful form displayed by Australia in the second Test, which England won by a mammoth innings and 71 runs. It is an audacious request but one borne out of necessity.
No players are demanding selection with outstanding performances in the first-class scene, effectively leading selectors to choose from the best of a bland bunch.
Johnson, who has struggled for consistency with his line for 18 months, is expected to be recalled after a week of nets training that will have supposedly corrected the flaws.
The plan defies logic but these are desperate times for a side facing consecutive series defeats, and their first Ashes loss at home since 1986-87.
Johnson wanted to play in the Sheffield Shield for Western Australia but was told to stay with the squad and work on his action with bowling coach Troy Cooley. His performance in Perth will be telling for both men.
Doherty was thrown in the deep end far too early, and the batting-friendly conditions on the Adelaide Oval pitch exposed his lack of variation. While Hauritz has struggled to be a match-winner against good batting sides, he remains the most valid option for Perth.
His confidence was shattered after the debacle of the Indian series, and it is debatable whether he would have had any more success than Doherty in the first two Tests. But after taking a five-for and scoring a century for NSW recently, Hauritz's self-belief should be back to where it needs to be for the challenge ahead.
West Australian youngster Michael Beer has been suggested as the spinning answer by Shane Warne but like Doherty he is not experienced enough.
Selectors have to make changes but cannot pick players before they are ready, or else the scars of being battered can hamper their development.
Beer has good flight and bounce but Australia does not want another situation like Doherty, who will likely become the ninth spinner since Warne's retirement to be tried and dumped.
The lack of young contenders in superior form is a serious problem, and Australia cannot expect to fix these ills within two years.
On the other hand, England's greatest problem is complacency, which is a nice place to be.
''You've got to be careful you don't fall into the trap of too much back-patting too early,'' wicketkeeper Matt Prior said. ''We've played well, the tour's gone well so far but it's all in the past now. We're one-nil up. That's fantastic. We've got to make sure we go two-nil up.''
England has just one selection concern, with Stuart Broad back home after straining a stomach muscle in Adelaide.
His replacement will be one of Chris Tremlett, Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad.
Prior added: ''You can fall into a trap if you start looking too far ahead.''
Unfortunately for Australia, looking ahead means looking backwards.

The selectors are obviously using the same approach with North as they did with Hussey. Stick with him for 3 years and eventually his edges won't quite carry to the slips, the opposition will be out of challenges when he gets given not out to a plumb lb shout and he'll go on to score a big hundred. Should only take another 18 months or so for the plan to bear fruit.

not quite but it would be geniused, I still think wheeling Bryce McGain out was the most geniused thing the Aussies selectors did.

why go back to the out of form people ?

they talk about players needing ashes experience, experience at what ?

losing the ashes

how many ashes have we won in the last decade ?

f**king joke

Current form aside, I can't believe they are going to reward Johnson for his hissy fit after being dropped

What we need is a bouncy deck, this will help both sets of bowlers and even things out greatly, so at least we arent gonna be conceeding 2/550 by end of day 2, well I hope we wont. Another road deck, and its either a draw or poms will win, Lot of our guys dont have the mental toughness to pay a long dig

Ponting needs to deliver the innings from hell

North needs to do something, anything

I dont mind Hilfy back, Johnson can be hit and miss, hopefully he can do kill the poms like he did to South Africa at Perth

The series will come alight if we level it 1-1.

I doubt the series will come alive. We levelled in 09 at 1-1 and the Poms stepped it up and smacked our backsides. It would be astounding if they let us get back in it, but even more so if that turned out to be more than a blip on their way to a solid series win. I don't believe a test win is beyond us, I just don't think it will happen whilst the ashes are still up for grabs. Sydney is most likely for a morale booster but a 2-1 or 3-1 final result.

To be honest, as much as it pains me to say it, I'd keep North.

For his bowling only.

I've posted my ideal team elsewhere But I'll post it here as well.

1 - Hughes - Test average of 50, should never have been dropped, will be a mainstay in the test side for many years.
2 - Hussey - a more than capable opener, has form and is on his home pitch, brings stability to the top order and will provide some experience to counter Hughes' youth
3 - Ponting - test captain, a gazillion runs, scores well at the WACA, especially when his form is below par (which it is)
4 - Clarke - Averages 50, he made a gutsy 80 in his last dig to show he can dig deep and produce a good knock when needed.
5 - Watson - Has good form and will provide great support for the top and middle order batting at 5 which will help stabilise an innings if neccessary. It would also mean he can bowl more overs (Mostly into the wind, to get some decent swing)
6 - Khwaja - Will be a future permanent test player. Ponting started at 6 and went on to score the most test runs by an Aussie batsmen. Khwaja is good enough to break his record.
7 - Haddin - keeper, batting well also.
8 - North - Can bat, well he used to be able to. His bowling is actually very good this series, much better than Doherty. Home turf, so he may feel more comfortable. Batting at 8 would take the pressure off his batting as well, which could be what he needs to get some runs and his confidence back. If he fails though. No more test cricket ever again.
9 - Harris - Best bowler in Adelaide and our second best bowler so far this series. Raw pace will be needed at WACA
10 - Bollinger - Needs to lift his game, but has the best first class and test bowling average of all our bowlers.
11 - Hilfenhaus - we need someone who can run into the wind all day and swing the ball. Hilfy is the man.

4 quicks, a spinner, and a strong batting line up.

That's the answer right there. Not Johnson ffs.

Beer wtf!

No North - two thumbs up.
Smith - another two thumbs up.

Johnson - you have to be kidding.
Bollinger dropped - you bunch of turnips
Beer - you drink beer, it goes well with pies, but only when you're on the other side of the boundary rope. Clowns.

I am gonna have a coffee, digest this BS from the Aussie selectors and comment more later. AGAIN, never agreed with dropping Hauritz though if the selectors were going to bring in Doherty, he needed the full support and not one or two Tests to prove himself. Another Aussie spinner whose career will suffer at the hands of Australia selectors if only because they are quick to hit the panic button.

Xavier Doherty is likely to end up with Dan Cullen.
