3rd ASHES TEST: Australia v England at Perth, Dec 16-20 2010

Heaps better squad for the future. The Ashes is more than likely lost so I think it's as good a time as any to get some youngsters in the side. Beer's quite a good player. Well sort of. A toiler who can bowl long spells if need be and won't go for much. Pretty rough on Doherty. None of our bowlers were taking wickets. And with spinners you need to give them a series or two. Would've liked Bollinger to stick around. He'll be much fitter the second time round. No North which is a bonus. I'd go:

Watson
Hughes
Ponting
Hussey
Clarke
Haddin
Smith
Harris
Hilfenhaus
Siddle
Beer

12th Man: Johnson

Disappointed to see them pick Johnson. I think he needs more time away from cricket. But if his action is back I'd pick him over Hilfenhaus. If Siddle and Hilfenhaus struggle again, Bollinger and Copeland need to come in. Undecided about Harris. Perth is the perfect place to find out how he really goes. Next stops for the future are Khawaja and Copeland.

Michael Beer? LOL

I remember when England went through spinners like toilet paper. All in the hope that one of them, contrary to their first-class record, would magically turn into Jim Laker.

Funny stuff.

Also good to see Johnson back. Australia's great hope should provide us with another boost to our Extras column.

Seriously can we get rid of these moronic selectors, well done on finally f**king Marcus North off, however there good work was undone by dropping Bollinger and recalling sh*tchell

Bollinger didn't look fit so I can understand him being dropped but I'd have Copeland in the squad ahead of Johnson.

jesus

and Sh*tchell is back in, Bollinger dropped and some neville picked

it's a sh*t side

Doesn't mean Johnson will get picked for the test. He shouldn't be picked in the Test either. But when he is on song he is our best bowler by far. How do you know he hasn't got his action back anyway?

Bollinger was more than likely to be dropped. I think we all knew that. He would've being better for the second run but that's what our current selectors are like.

As to Beer, you haven't seen him play have you? He's a reasonably good player who is still quite young. Not a great selection (pretty poor in fact) but I can see what they are trying to do. He hasn't played many games but his bowling is tight, he knows the ground and gets good bounce which will be even more dangerous at Perth. Whether he can handle Test cricket is another matter entirely. But it's not much worse than picking Hauritz or Doherty. None of of them have performed well in Tests or first class cricket regularly, are prodigious turners, get huge amounts of drift or beat players with a well flighted ball. They have to stick with him though if he shows anything. The lack of a genuine, Test ready and Test quality spinner is a real concern. O'Keefe and Boyce have potential. But it's just that. Potential. O'Keefe can't even make the regular NSW side.

It's a start. What more do you want? We can't have all debutants. Over the next 12 months we need to start picking them but we can't pick them all now.

Young left-arm spinner Michael Beer is a shock selection for the third Test in Perth, beating Nathan Hauritz and Xavier Doherty to a place in Australia's 12-man squad.

Doherty, Marcus North and Doug Bollinger have been dropped from the side that lost by an innings and 71 runs.

Beer, the 26-year-old West Australian has played just five first-class games with 16 wickets at an average of 39.93.

Hauritz, who had been tipped to come in for Doherty, will now struggle to revive his Test career in light of this latest selection.

Beer will be expected to make his debut on home soil, although he originally hails from Victoria.

Hauritz has just claimed 3-106 from 33.1 overs over two innings in the latest Sheffield Shield match for NSW against South Australia.

Phillip Hughes, who replaces the injured Simon Katich, was dismissed for a duck in NSW's second innings after discovering he was in the Test squad.

Steve Smith has come in for North, who has struggled to make a big score in pressure situations.

Mitchell Johnson also returns after a week of remedial work on his action, with Bollinger making way.

Selection chairman Andrew Hilditch said: "Phillip Hughes replaces the injured Simon Katich in the squad for the third Test match in Perth. Phil is an exciting young batsman who has already proven his ability to succeed at international level and he deserves this opportunity to return to the Australian side.

"Steve Smith replaces Marcus North in the 12-man squad. This is obviously disappointing for Marcus who has played some outstanding Test innings for Australia but it was felt to be the right time to bring the exciting prospect Steve Smith into the Test team. Steve has already had success at international level and will also add to the bowling depth with his leg spin bowling and dynamic fielding.

"Michael Beer replaces Xavier Doherty in the squad. Michael is a left-arm orthodox spinner who has been very impressive at domestic level this year. He took wickets against England in the tour match earlier this summer and we expect he will bowl very well against the English on his home ground.

"Doug Bollinger has been omitted from the squad. Both Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus did not play in Adelaide but will be strongly considered for selection in the Perth Test match where conditions will suit them. Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle were the pick of our quicks at Adelaide Oval and these four make up the pace attack for the Perth Test match.

"The squad is a very exciting one with a blend of talented young players and experienced international cricketers. We are confident it will play an aggressive brand of cricket as we try to change the momentum of the Test series in this critical Ashes Perth Test match."

I'll have some of what Andrew Hilditch is smoking.

Only quicks who were ok in Adelaide were Harris and Watson IMO. The other two were pretty pathetic. If Bollinger wasn't bowling 130 all day in Adelaide he would have been picked.

Agree, Andrew Hilditch and his selectors should become comedians.

I just wonder how they pick the team, I wonder if Copeland has even been mentioned. He should be debuting at the WACA for sure IMO.

I never agreed Bollinger should have being dropped. Here:

Would've liked Bollinger to stick around. He'll be much fitter the second time round.

f**khead. Start reading.

Johnson was the world's best quick not long ago. Officially. You don't watch cricket at all do you?

Plenty of players who have played few first class games or poor averages have gone on to great things. Beer may surprise. Or he may fail miserably. Ian Healy's selection was a massive surprise. Shane Warne played bugger all first class cricket and got taken apart in his first few tests. Kumble played just one year of first class cricket. Hayden was dumped and left out of the squad for years. These are great players...

yup

0/121 is better than 1/130 and 1/44

chefman is Hilditch?

Hmmm....

Muttiah Muralitharan:
2/225 - 9 December 1995

Shane Warne
0/147 - 18 March 1998

Syd Barnes (the greatest bowler of all time)
0/74 - 24 June 1912 (in an era when innings totals were almost always a low scoring affair)

Glenn McGrath
0/106 - 1 Dec 2006

One innings does not define a bowler or a career... Nor does an average...
