3rd ASHES TEST: Australia v England at Perth, Dec 16-20 2010

Spearhead Siddle took 60 percent of the wickets against England in the first innings of the first test and what has he done since?

Did you miss what the argument was about? I said that when in form, Johnson is our best bowler as his international cricketer of the year award suggests, and that a poor innings doesnt define a career or quality of player. Go back and read the argument. Page 30 or so. The difference between the two is that Johnsnn is a class act and a genuine world class bowler. Siddle is a change bowler.

Great comeback from Australia, and Johnston. As much as I have agreed with the criticism leveled at him, that was as good as I've seen him bowl in a long time. Maybe dropping him for the second test made a difference?

That was as good as he has bowled EVER. Much better bowling than when he demolished the Saffas. I have never, ever seen Mitchell Johnson bowl with swing like that. There is not a batting line up in the game that will last long against a left armer up around the 140 mark consistently swinging it back down the line. It was almost Akram like. The last time I'd seen something similar from an Australian was when Bruce Reid destroyed the Poms in Melbourne in 91, but even he wasn't bringing it back as much as Mitch was yesterday, nor at his pace. It truly was an outstanding bowling effort.

My problem is are we going to see it again any time soon? There's no question the conditions yesterday at the WACA were perfect for swing and Johnson was getting it to go even with a fairly scrambled seam. When we get to the other 99% of grounds where the breeze isn't helping him swing it back in will he still be able to keep it tidy and bring the odd one in just enough to make them play at and nick the straight ones? History doesn't hold much hope unfortunately. If Johnson bowls anything like that in the 2nd dig Australia will win and win well, but the last time he got a bag full at the WACA the Saffas reeled in 400 4 down. Here's hoping, because if he bowls like that consistently I'll become a fan. Of course I said the same thing about Siddle after the 1st dig at Brisbane and he's bowled nothing but pus since.

This game ain't over. Last year the Windies scored 323 batting last, and SA the year before breezed to 400 after conceding a similar lead as we have on the 1st innings. The year before that we lost to India but still scored the biggest total of the match (340) batting last. Against the Poms in the last series we scored 527 and they scored 350 in the 3rd and 4th innings, the year before that against the saffas again we scored 500 in the 3rd innings and couldn't bowl them out in 126 overs. You have to go all the way back to 04 for the last time a side really struggled in the 4th innings in Perth (McGrath took 8/24 against the Pakis). In other words Perth is a ground that gets easier to bat on the longer the game goes. We will need a lot of runs today before we can be safe.

If Johnson keeps his action right you would like to think he will continue to bowl with the some venom in other tests. Only time will tell.

Well you would think we have enough coaching staff around to stay on top of something like that???

yeah you would but how Johnson was allowed to bowl with his action so far from what it had to be for so long you start to wonder....

The first test would be a more sobering reminder that this test isn't over. But Australia are in the box seat.

Certainly in the box seat, but we need at least another 200 I reckon and even that might not be enough if we don't bowl well.

the worst thing about Siddle's wicket is that he will think its an attacking move to bowl short sh*t now, but that certainly wasn't the mode of dismissal he was looking for

great to see Notch back to form, swinging the ball well, same with Harry to a lesser extent

also thats some of the best wicket keeping I've seen for a long time from Haddin, there were some pretty terrible balls down the leg side that he stopped with some pretty good acrobatics

we need these two to pile on another 50 run partnership and see what Steve Smith and Haddin can do

Yep f**king ridiculous wasn't it. Anderson was the only one of Notches wickets that wasn't up full and threatening the sticks. Harris' balls to get Strauss and Swann were full stump high just outside off, he also picked up Bell with a full one.

Siddle looked good in Brisbane for the same reason. He got the ball up there and gave himself a chance of bowled, lb and nicks. I wondered at the time how long it would be until he reverted to his usual short garbage and I think we have have our answer. He'll see Prior's wicket as vindication when all it was was bad luck for the batsman.

it wasn't just the fact that he bowled short rubbish, it was also the stooopid fields that were set for him, just rubbish

Yeah Ponting doesn't exactly discourage crud sometimes does he. They obviously had a 'plan' but with conditions conducive to good full fast bowling and the team on top why go to something like that when standard good cricket is doing the job?

Siddle won't be in the next text anyway, so we won't have to worry about his short crap.

We need to bat all day today, and then an hour or so tomorrow. Probably being massively optimistic though, we'll probably be skittled for 200.
