If Watson wants to be an opener he needs convert fifties into centuries BUT he also needs to convert centuries into 'big' centuries.

He is a good opener now BUT he needs to become a great opener.

Rubbish. If Watson and his partner negotiate an hour, 90 mintues even two hours and see off the new ball and continually get us to 0/80+ and he scores a half century then that's his job and scoring centuries and big centuries is a bonus. This talk about Watson having to convert fifties in to centuries is getting out of hand that's not his job seeing off the new ball and getting the team off to a good start is his job.

exactly! I was talking about this in another thread, in regards to Hughes being picked for his ability to make huge hundreds. But too often he gets out early on because of technical deficiencies. I would be ok with an opener that may not make those big hundreds, but more often than not sees off the new ball, so our frail top four aren't exposed to the new ball.

One guy who didn't make those big centuries in the late 80s was one Geoff Marsh. Only averaged 37, but more often than not, he would see off the new ball.

Absolute rubbish.

Protecting Ponting and Clarke is only one facet of the openers job. Another facet of the openers job is to set up an acceptable/good score. Fifties won't do that.

And the unfortunate fact is, Ponting and Clarke are grossly out of form, and since Watson is 'in form' he needs to go on with it because as we have seen throughout this series if Watson gets his fifty that is simply not good enough to set up a good score.

lol that's interesting about the drs. the umpire gave him out caught, but he didn't hit it. If it showed it was fully hitting the stumps, imo it would be out, but what if less than half the ball was clipping the stumps? would the umpire giving him out mean that umpires decision stands? as i'm typing warnie starts talking about it.

another question is, the poms were actually appealing for the catch, does the fact that they didn't appeal for the lbw make it not out, because technically the umpire can't give it out if they don't appeal lol.
