In fairness I think he's a quality player. He's not consistent as a batsman, but he's also batting too high at 5, he seems a classic number 7. But he was good keeper when he had the gloves, he's a dangerous batsman and an excellent fielder. I just think his captaincy is pretty ordinary for the most part.
McCullum's problem is the same for too many batsmen around the world - zero situational thinking. They have too much of a "I'll swing away, it's either going to be my day or it won't" mindset. His captaincy just reflects that, it either lands his way or it doesn't.
A lot was made if NZ not losing series under McCullum, but the problem is they didn't win much either. Recent history is littered with 1-1 series results. That's all well and good to say " we didn't lose" but we're still probably not even winning 50% of our games and series wins are still extremely rare.
That's why I don't really rate him as a player or captain. As much as I enjoy watching him when it all comes off there's zero tactical thought, zero situational thinking, it's simply either going to fall our way or it won't.
