... if you mistake Warner for Slats, Sehwag and Sir Viv sure

Cut from the same cloth but a notch below

Lol. I'm Slats' biggest fan as a player, but he was a notch below Warner quite comfortably. Sehwag and Viv were freaks, irrelevant to the discussion tbh.

There has always been a place for aggressive players who look to score in test match cricket. Warner might have batted 7 in years gone by, but there was certainly a role for that kind of player. Pretending he's somehow a symptom of some kind of problems with modern test cricket is pretty dumb.

Did I just read Warner and Slater in the same sentence ?

No comparison, except for Davey needs to watch more Slater DVD's, to learn from the original swashbuckler ( of my era, anyway)

Kidding. I loved Slats as a player, don't get me wrong....but he averaged 34 in England, 28 in India, 29 in NZ, 29 in the Windies.

He did have a very good record against Pakistan, which is a massive credit to him given the pace bowlers he would have faced....but ultimately his career overall paints the picture. 5300 runs at 43 is admirable, but Warner has 500 less runs in 20 fewer tests, more hundreds, more 50s, average of 48....

Funny that Slater has always had the reputation of being this ultra-aggressive batsman, yet his strike rate was only 53 - Michael Clarke is a better comparison for him (as far as batsman in general go).

Era is important imo....no 20/20 rubbish in Slats day....tests actually went the full 5 days.

I would have Slater > Warner every time.

Now you're talking like the famous Antilag, the numbers back then mean nothing in comparison to now.

Slater didn't crunch big flash numbers but he faced nightmare attacks and was ahead of his time in approach.

When was the last time anyone actually pre-purchased a ticket to the 5th day of an Aussie summer Test ?

Warner averages 37 in England, 13 in NZ, 24 in India, 27 in Sri Lanka, 27 in West Indies

Warner is a test quality batsman, and I would rate him above Slater, but not sure he can be considered genuine world class until he picks up more runs overseas.
