it was confirmed that Philander was fit and ready to be back. I want Elgar at number 7 and you have an extra slot

I can see South Africa line up being

Smith
Petersen
Amla
du Plessis
de Villiers
Rudolph
Elgar/Tsolekile
Philander
Steyn
Kleinveldt
Morkel

I don't think it is overly likely that Tsolekile will come in, but it's a possibility and he has been travelling with the team for a while now. I think we have to go Elgar because he's a spin bowling option and if we're punting Tahir you want one a bit better than Faf, but I have no issue with taking four quicks to Perth

From what I've heard Philander will play.

1. Alviro Peterson
2. Graeme Smith
3. Hashim Amla
4. Jaques Rudolph
5. AB De Villiers
6. Faf Du Plessis
7. Jaques Kallis/Dean Elgar/Ryan McLaren
8. Vernon Philander
9. Rory Kleinveldt/Robin Peterson
10. Dale Steyn
11. Morne Morkel

If Kallis isn't fit he'll either be replaced by batamen Dean Elgar or all rounder Ryan McLaren.

The other desicion is to decide between 4 quicks or 3 quicks and the spinner.

If they do go with a spinner I think they'll play Robin Peterson who is more of a defensive bowler.

wait, Robin Peterson is in the squad, we could go him, I think he deserves a chance, but I would rather go Elgar in Perth because he is the better batsman

Surley they will pick the keeper.

They either go McLaren or give the leggie another go.

I don't really know why McLaren was called into the squad. Could be cloak and dagger stuff. I don't think he is a chance and judging by what South Africa have done since Boucher's injury I don't think Thami is likely to get a go either. If Kallis doesn't play I think it will be Elgar or Peterson replacing him

it's interesting that South Africa have been saying that Kallis can't bowl in Perth but if he can bat we're likely to select him.

I have a bad feeling about this test. Australia has been by far the better side over the 1st 2 tests for no result. I don’t think South Africa will underperform again.

As for team selection I am a big believer of always having a spinner and Perth hasn’t been its old self for ages so for me Lyon plays. I don’t have as big a problem with Johnson as some here do but to pick him based on a performance 4 years ago is ridiculous. I wouldn’t have a problem with Ponting playing if he announces that this summer is his swan song.

On the SA side, the Kallis thing is interesting because it appears he is better on 1 leg than any replacement would be on 2 legs.

Graeme Smith's record continued. The Cricket Boks never losing a test where he got a ton in.

Mind you what's to say they don't get skittled for bugger all and it's over in 3 days

South Africa need to bring in a specialist keeper, de villiers is good enough as a stop gap but it is affecting his batting.

Bit of a test here for Clarke and Ponting, as the WACA has a bit of a hoodoo on them at test level in recent years.

Pontings best performances there have been after a string of poor form in previous tests and Clarke is unbeatable form at the moment.

Ponting has only scored a single 50, Clarke has 2 50's. Both have no centuries at WACA since 2007 at Test level.

Since Jan 1, 2007 at WACA
Ponting - 142 runs at 15.78 (career avg at WACA 41.43)
Clarke - 269 runs at 29.89 (career avg at WACA 39.08)

Hastings... I mean FFS. Even the selection of Hazelwood is debatable but you can tell he has genuine potential. Johnson as a WACA specialist I can live with but only if we play 4 quicks.

The left hand bowler will give Lyon some rough outside the off stump to work with. Lyon bowled well without luck imo and without a lot of assistance.

Johnson cannot play surely. However if Siddle doesn't play he definitely will imo, they will want at least two experienced bowlers in Hilfy and either Siddle or Johnson. You can take that as granted.
