4 Competition points

To be honest, I get fed up with teams going into the round 26, locked in the same position with 6 other clubs, only seperated by the 72-0 thrashing Melbourne gave them a couple of weeks ago. I find it hard to believe all those clubs are very 'evenly matched'. The points system and the salary cap does that.

Instead of chucking Golden Point to create less congestion through the table with a couple of disappointing draws, why not hand out more points for winning margins?

You could have four competition points up for grabs each match.

4 points to the victorious team with a winning margin over 6 points.

3 points to the victorious team with a winning margin within 6 points, and 1 point to the defeated team, who got within 6 points of their opposition.

2 points to each team in the case of a draw.

This way teams aren't punished as harshly if they have been in front the whole game, and are pipped in the final minute of the game.

A lucky 'pull it out of the bag' win doesn't gain the same rewards as a 50-0 thrashing.

And 6 teams aren't locked on the same points at the end of the round robbin.

Kind of like the Super 14 I guess.
Thoughts?

If we were to bring in 4 competition points, i think it would be best used to make Golden Point a bit fairer.

4 points for a win.
3 points for a GP win.
2 points for a draw.
1 point for a GP loss.

Although i'd still rather keep 2 competition points, and just remove GP altogether.

Possibly. But agree on the removal of Golden Point.

Gawd, I am still against any form of winning competition points for losing a game. The direction that could lead into would just be such a difficult scoring system where, as usual, referee margin for error comes into full context.

If you lose, you just weren't good enough on the night. It would take away alot of meaning of those 'arm wrestles'.

Super 14 currently uses a similar system if I'm not mistaken, and it's oft enabled lacklustre teams to make the finals simply due to their smaller losing margins.

Why not scrap golden point...

Make it 3 points for a win
1 for a draw
0 for a loss

And a bonus point for beating your opposition by more than 10 or something. So only dominant teams get the points.

Personally I don't think the points system needs changing, just scrap golden point altogether. But if points were to be awarded for convincing victories, that is the format I'd run with.

In Super 14 there is one entire round i.e. every team plays each other once. In the NRL there is an uneven spread of opponents. For that reason, I wouldn't favour bonus points.

Some of the dumbest sh*t i've ever read lies in this thread!!

4 points by winning by 6 or more??!!!

How 'bout creating a super 14 like bonus point that gives a team a bonus point for say... scoring more then 5 tries.

Keep golden point the way it is.

What about say the Sharks? Their style is to grind wins. Canberra win less matches but put the sword thru teams at home. Theoretically they may have finished top of the table.

As you infer, the Super 14 bonus system was put in place to encourage attacking points-scoring football as much as it was to ensure beaten teams play out the 80 minutes. It doesn't encourage a team to develop a "hard-nosed" grafting style, yet that sort of team in RL can be great to watch - intimidating, aggression etc.

Toss in the weather, night v day football, Origin absences, no home and away...the NRL comp has too many variables to allow for a Super 14 style bonus points system.

...and hands up who thinks the Super 14 is any better/worse for having it anyway? (To me it just adds to confusion, along with the Super 14 team franchise names having no geographic reference).

In the nrl teams do play each other once too so you could put the bonus point in the games where teams play each other once.

Imo the bonus point is not the way to go

An rule would could be better ie rewarding the teams who have won more games away, if they finish on the same points as other teams, their wins from away should give them the edge.

If teams are equal on the same away wins then the for and against will come in

I think we can live without a bonus point.

Rugby League is a far superior product to Rugby Union in my humble opinion. They had to make changes to Super 14 because they wanted it to be different to the goalkick fest that some Test Rugby has become.

I don't think we have the same issues.

Perhaps we should just get a few more clubs up to speed and enlarge the competition to the point where everyone plays each other once!

I would like to see 4 points for a win, 1 point each if a draw after 80 min. then 2 points extra for the team that wins in gp. if still a draw after gp then each team gets another extra point.

Scrap golden point all together, a draw is fine.

No need for extra points and bonus points and all this other crap.
