This australian batting line up continues to set records for mediocrity over the past 7 years. What a humiliating way to give back the Ashes.

7/35 after 10 overs. Ordinary run rate. We're Australians, we play "positive" cricket. Should be 4 an over at least.

Pwrhaps we need an English batting coach for ashes tours to teach the batsmen how to play english conditions. Johnson looking more like a batsman than the guys picked for the job.

They already know how to bat, in these conditions you have to wait for the ball and sometimes play it off the pitch and they have been practicing that.

After having spent a life time batting differently on Australian wickets they bat the way they have batted all their life on Australian decks.

It takes ages to change something you have been doing since you first picked up a bat.

Even though he's a tail ender, Johnson seems to be the only one so far who has at least tried to play to the conditions.

Of course they're good enough. Patience and ability are very different things. As we've seen here. What's wrong with being 0/7 after 15 in these conditions? Voges and Marsh probably aren't good enough. The rest have proven themselves in the past bar Nevill who is a rookie. It's about digging in at this stage, and they haven't done that.

I know but isn't patience part of what makes you good enough as a top-tier batsman?

You're right though, this team has too often shown a reluctance to dig in. The only way they know is gung-ho, like they're still playing in the IPL.

You'd think they have enough common sense to instil a bit of patience into their game while in England, or is it that ingrained that it's impossible over a short amount of time?

As I said, with the weather being mostly sunny on days 2/3/4 with showers on day 5, our best chance for a draw is for us to really dig deep in the 2nd innings and bat close to two whole days.

Johnson/Hazlewood/Starc would really have to skittle England for any chance of winning this test, which I don't see happening

Well it certainly be our best chance in the first innings.

This australian batting line up continues to set records for mediocrity over the past 7 years. What a humiliating way to give back the Ashes.

Just as humiliating as when we lost 3 of the 5 tests in 2010/11 by an innings, culminating with when we got bowled out for less than 100 on Boxing Day and the Poms had a 50+ run lead without loss at the end of the first day.

Numbers 8 and 9 batsmen do not appear to be having too many problems. Obviously something has happened to the pitch.
