Don't want to be patronising, but a 50 run partnership is a good effort after that start

On Boult, I wasn't convinced he was a certainty for the squad, but can understand why they'd back the Boult-Southee partnership.

I feel a bit for Mills, he's a very very fine ODI bowler, and I'd be happy with him opening and Boult at first change...

McClenaghan for me is unusual, he takes wickets but for the life of me I can't see why...

We'll just call that the Mitchell Johnson effect. He takes wickets now, but for the first half of his career Aussie fans couldn't figure out how.

Yeah, Johnson was for the most part rubbish, and I said as much - have to say the same out our guy

Johnson does bowl about 10km/h quicker though... although I am not sure what to make of that given the difference in pace of the wickets

Speaking of bowlers who mysteriously get wickets. 5 down now.

Milne back in. This is where he really needs to prove his worth. Lower order exposed, tail to come. His extra pace "should" be hard for them to handle if he puts it in the right areas.

McLenaghan had a bit of a Philander start to his career, buckets of wickets which made his average spectacular but not being a particularly exceptional bowler.

Boult doesn't have a good average but has done brilliantly at test level and has very good swing, control and an extra yard of pace over McL. The latter is decent backup but not a first XI player imo.

Mills unlucky but understandable with Southee present.
I might have chosen Henry over Milne though.

At the end of the day Anderson's happy knack of picking up wickets while being only moderately expensive might be what keeps McClenaghan out of the top XI

Keen to see Henry in a test team tbh... While Bracewell and Wagner have been admirable, surely just a matter of time before they drop behind Henry and Milne in the pecking order for tests

As an aside, Brownlie must have bumped Rutherford now too... surely?

If McClenaghan was right handed I think he'd edge Milne. The fact we have Boult, Anderson, Vettori all bowling left arm probably swayed it a bit. Not often you get 5 bowlers with only 1 right hander.

As for Henry IMO if the WC was 6 months later I think he would have had enough time to force his way into the side, even if it was just at Mills expense. Quality bowler.

I don't think there's much more Brownlie could do really.

Or there's not much less Rutherford could do.

The only real thing I've got out of this game is that this isn't Milne's time. He's in the squad now so no point pining for Henry, but I think Mitch needs to take his place for the big games.

His variation is his pace, that his one key weapon, and he doesn't seem to be delivering that now.

I heard someone on the radio on Sunday say that Milne was in the top team purely based on McCullum.

McCullum likes the variation that Milne's pace provides the seam attack.

I suspect in the knockout games Mills or McGlenaghan might well play - there's two tournaments here... The Aust game might be the real signal as to the top bowling attack

And TBH, that's fair enough... everyone has an opinion, but the captain and coach get to make the decisions, and they have their reasons...

all out 142 and we're batting for a bit before lunch - I find that bizarre really, surely they should take the break straight away
