You're a Melbourne fan, I don't expect you to get it. Your club has never had to fight on a level playing field. And your club has no history.
Seriously Jason? Seriously? Never had to fight on a level playing field? You're taking the piss aren't you? Then you mention history. Give yourself an upper cut mate. Look at the majority of Dragons Premierships and see how the rules favoured you at the expense of other clubs.
The Melbourne Storm have no traditional supporter base to fall back on if times get tough. No traditional juniors from which to source players. No leagues club to provide them with endless funds. They have to pay over the odds in a flat salary cap to entice players from QLD and NSW to go down there to live. A club such as Brisbane had a massive junior base and the cost of living is lower there than many other capital cities. Are they on a level playing field? How come they don't get the vitriol that the the Storm cop?
Yes the Storm get money from News Limited - but that's not going to be there forever like a leagues club funding is.
If clubs were allowed additional cap concessions for playing their own juniors the Storm would be further disadvantaged but I doubt that anyone from the Illawarra, Brisbane, South Sydney, Parramatta or Penrith would be here crying on their behalf. Cries of suck shit ya Victorian wankers would be ringing round the room.
The fact of the matter is, the Melbourne Storm are a great club that have prospered in a town where they were far more likely to fail. Due to their success there are now youngsters playing Rugby League in Victoria. If that's not worth celebrating I don't know what is. Melbourne has been our only real step forward outside our traditional area in 20 years - ok, so the Warriors are now also successful, but New Zealanders played league in Auckland before the Warriors.
Most of the dislike about the Storm stems from jealousy, pure and simple. Yes they cheated the salary cap - but it is an unfair cap in many respects and other sports make allowances for disadvantages clubs have by giving them allowances for additional funding etc. They've gotten past the cap issue, have shed players, incurred penalties that would destroy other clubs and they're top of the league. That says more positive stuff about them than I ever could.
Maybe you really haven't gotten over 1999. Go on, that's the real reason you hate them.
