Here's an event some of you will enjoy

http://www.moshtix.com.au/event.aspx?id=33303&ref=moshtix

a few of these bands can be considered more "80ish" but you get the picture.
you can add The Meanies on the list too, they are playing, straight from the Linkman himself.

bad night for it though if your team is playing the satdy night, first round. I'll be in there in the arvo, then down to Endeavour and back for the last bit.

yep thats them.
that was sorta their second phase, they went through a few. They started out being a skate/surf/thrash band, onto a bit more rockier with some pop, and onto their last phase where they were melted (pushed) into the seattle kinda thing.
Brown, the singer, did all the artwork and most famously was the one behind the classic Massapeal shirt, "Nobody Likes a Thinker", which James Hetfield(sp?) had on in some mag in England.
here's something from their beginnings

the fella who put this up has a pretty good collection of uploads on youtube, check em out.

Probably the tail end of the 80's rather than the 90's, but probably one of the best Australian songs ever that barely anyone has heard:

The Drones played it as the last song at the Tote last week. Awesome song. Great riff!

great song, used to cover it in one of my incarnations.
did you get to the tote gig, Alex? i'm damned spewin that i couldnt get down. Played the tote a fair few times, unreal venue and a lot of me mates played that day, including the Drones. Plus Big John who i play with here in sydney, he had his melbourne stable that day/night.

Didn't go, but it was an ace venue. Shame the way these excellent smaller venues are being forced out by ridiculous laws...

90's was fairly decent but 80's was the best year for Aussie music.

Thank f**k I read this, my faith is restored.

Aussie Crawl, Oils, INXS, Angels.......all live at The Caringbah Inn which was down the road.

No-one's mentioned The Screaming Jets or Pollyanna yet, and I wish to add them to the list. Well, if someone did mention it I didn't notice it.

;-)

They were an excellent band, I used to be obsessed with them 10 years ago.

Whatever happened to Chocolate Starfish?
Now there was a band that was tremendous live.

They were poorly managed IMO. Releasing "You're so vain" as their first single, I believe, was a tactical error. While covering a known song is a nice way to build up awareness, it also runs the risk of people only remembering you as "The band who did that one cover song". See: Alien Ant Farm. Also, that song was stylistically quite different from the other output on that album.

I'd agree with that, the album, & stage show they put on, had no resemblance to the "Your so vain" single whatsoever.

They were a pretty full on bunch of rockers, wild on stage & your so vain wasnt qite a good fit was it, though I did like it as a cover in its own right.

Pollyanna and Ice Cream Hands deserve a mention...Does Ratcat squeak in at the front end of the 90's?!

God, I loved the 90's. Music was so much better.

Ahhhh the heady days of live music at the Bar on the Hill (Newcastle Uni). I have fond memories of these bands...

Regurgitator (the whole crowd yelling out "I will lick your ***hole" is stuck in my memory)
Shihad (Jon Toogood jumping on top of a speaker, yelling out "Newcastle Uni f***ing rules", and leaping into the crowd for a body surf. Just as well he was a skinny bugger, the impact when he landed on me was manageable. The band members had drinks at the bar after the gig, the single most humble band I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.)
28 Days (one time they toured they only just released "What's The Deal" a few weeks previously, massive crowd singalong)
Something For Kate (before people started saying they were boring, "Say Something" was great live)
The Superjesus (the crowd never got tired of "Gravity")
The Casanovas ("California" to this day remains one of the coolest songs I've ever heard live.)
The Mark of mother******* Cain! (nuff' said)
TISM (didn't actually see them at BOTH, went down to this Earthcore festival in Victoria to see them play. Hilarious)
Superheist (you can laugh now, but the crowd at the time loved "Crank Up The System" and "Bullet")
Bodyjar (so sad when I heard these guys broke up, nothing good lasts forever. Not The Same was my uni anthem of choice)
Grinspoon (they were actually at that point one of my favourite bands, Just Ace, Champion, Damn Straight and Lost Control were great live songs)
Magic Dirt (just really good old school rock n roll. Adalita was smoking.)
You Am I (They would normally rock out for 2 hours straight. From start to finish, from Berlin Chair to Get Up, they were awesome.)
Alchemist (Psychedelic Metal, the amount of energy they put into their live show was incredible, massive respect for this band. They didn't mind the fact they only had a live audience of about 10 people who bothered to show up and see them play. They were grateful we showed up and spent time during the set just asking us how we were going. They deserved a better audience tbh and more people should make an effort to go and support this band - if they're still around)

There was also this young band called the Vines that no one had heard of at that point. They put on a pretty tight set in support of You Am I and handed out free promo cds.
