United States of Americans often refer to their country as America. America is not a f**king country ffs.

Australians, however, have the awesome right to call their country by the same name we call the continent.

Anyway - that's pretty damn arrogant right there. It'd be like Egyptians calling their country Africa ffs.

I've only heard non-United States of Americans (I nearly just said Americans ) call themselves Americans or call their country America.

Several times I've asked people in the store if they're from America, and they've said "Yeah, we're from the states" or "Ya, we're from the USA"

I've never heard that. I always hear either 'The States', 'the US', or 'United States'..

Fair enough.

I lived in Oakland for 2 years and I never got over it.

And then you deal with tourists saying they're American...Pisses me off.

I had an English accent when I lived in Oakland, courtesy of my British school.

My very first conversation with a Californian kid:

"So...Dude...What's up with the way you talk? You pronounce things all funny, man - nobody talks like that. What type of accent is it - Mexican or something?"

God bless the United States of Arrogant-tools.

are you telling me you have never referred to a Chinese or Korean person as an Asian? Who cares what they say, they are AMERICAN just like a Chinese person is Asian.

yeah cause u can really judge a whole nation by what one little brat says. Like a lil Aussie dude saying to one of my friends "wow, are you from Ireland that is a very heavy accent you have".. hmmm we must all be arrogant tools too.

no I haven't met a yank and fell in love. I just happen to have all good experiences with them and some of the "yanks are arrogant" arguments are ridiculous.

who says they need to fit in with the rest of the world? Is that what YOU think everybody should be doing? Is that YOUR opinion? Yeah they are loud, so are Aussies. They love their sport and are very passionate about it (probably ALOT more than Australians in general.) Most people that say that Americans are arrogant have either had a bad experience with one and aren't willing to let it go, or have never met an American and are just listening to stereotypes. Well the stereotype about Aussies is that we do nothing but sit around and drink all day and surf. Um? No. I'm not talking about politics or the past I'm talking about MY experiences and in my experience Americans have been very warm and welcoming. Also among the people I've met here are the best guys I've met in my life, and I really hope they make it to Oz one day so I can take care of them the way they've taken care of me. Even before I came over here all the Americans I met were lovely.

i dont really understand what you are getting at, but where did i say they need to fit in?

im just explaining to you where the stereotypes for americans come from. and why a lot of people dont like americans...you can't seriously suggest that australians on average are as loud as americans...

ive met enough americans to know that they aren't all like that, and i said that in my post. good on you for meeting some nice americans, im not surprised that you did. hope you had a good trip

We are.

Besides, like I said - two years I lived there. I dealt with more Yanks than you care to know. And there were the god ones, fine. But there was a large percentage of obnoxious, ignorant, loud-mouthed ones. I got asked if I was Canadian several, several times - nothing against Canada or Canadians, but how the f**k does a British accent sound like a Canadian accent?

If a Yank says his country is America, it is different than a Korean saying they're from Asia.

Two completely different arguments.

They are NORTH American. And by that logic, Canadians are American, too - ever try telling a Yank that a Cannuck is an American, too?

I actually found Americans to be very arrogant, ignorant, selfish people on the whole when I was there...sure we met some nice ones but a lot of them fit the "stereotype." Of course, I'm not going to label all Yanks that way given we didn't go close to visiting everywhere and people seemed a lot nicer in our limited forays outside the cities.

They are very insular though, I'll never forget the family we stayed with inviting their friends for a BBQ, and their friends being amazed we spoke such good English and asking us if Malaysia was part of Australia (as we were living in Malaysia at the time)...

that is what I am referring to Eele.. I have never heard a yank say they are from America. EVER. Majority of the time they are from 'The States.' So no, not a different argument, same one.

For the record, I only dealt with a small percentage of douchers when I lived in Oakland. The majority of people were awesome.

It's just a pet peeve of mine when they say they live in a country called America - technically it's not right.

But I may be being a tad picky lol.

Yeah it was pretty funny...I kinda felt sorry for them in a way though, they were intelligent enough in general conversation but if you started talking about anything outside America they started looking more and more lost and confused. Speaking to their kids, the eldest was in year 10 at the time IIRC and said she had never studied any subject not related to America (aside from the general ones like Maths and Science obviously).

America is actually the original name for the country (although, much like Australia back in the day, it was a collection of autonomous states at that stage), dating back to colonial days. "The Americas" and "North and South America" came from that name, not the other way around. So America or American are technically just as correct as a Pom saying they are from England rather than the UK.
