A Draft?

No drafts.

The only thing I would be supportive of regarding junior player movements is affiliating the NSW Group system and it's Qld equivelant with NRL teams, with the NRL teams backing only. Which is a very long shot, since most NRL clubs don't have that kind of disposable income.

Is the nrl the only sport in the world with a salary cap but no draft?
That I know of. A salary cap works better when it is hand in hand with a draft.

This way salaries for unproven rookies stay sane, more money for proven veterans. More equality.

To make a draft work we'd need:

a) significant raise in the cap - it would have to go to 6m+ to make it worth it for the players to give up an important freedom

b) instead of the AFL's 'father son' rule, a 'local junior' rule - where there is 1 chance per team per year for a team to draft someone from their zone. If say Penrith has pick #10 and Easts have pick #3, and Easts select some talented bogan from out west, Penrith have the right to invoke the 'local junior' rule, their #10 pick is automatically used on the bogan, Easts have to pick again.

c) draft lottery - to stop tanking when a team is out of the running for the finals, there has to be a NBA style draft lottery, the team that finishes last has say a 25% chance of getting the 1st pick, 9th has a 1% chance, the first 2/3/4/5 picks are decided by the lottery, then the rest of the picks go to the remaining teams in reverse order. So if for example 3 picks were decided by the lottery, the wooden spooners could do no worse than the 4th pick.

A draft brings a lot of benefits. If marketed properly and done at the right times of the season, a draft lottery, the leadup to the draft and the draft itself could keep the NRL in the headlines (for the right reasons) from the end of one season to the start of the next.

Bunniesman wants a draft. Therefore no way in hell should we contemplate putting one in. The Current system seems to be working ok, just because another competition does something doesn't mean the NRL does.

As for juniors, like is suggested in the article and along the lines of the AFL's father-son rule. Each club has 1 or 2 designated junior picks where if one of their juniors has been picked ahead of their turn, and if they want him, they can claim him and their next pick is automatically used on that player.

For example, Penrith has the #5 pick. Easts has the #3 pick. Easts picks Westie Bogan, Penrith exercises the rule, their pick is used on the aforementioned Bogan, Easts has to pick again.

So the team picking first may have to pick 16 times before they get a pick?

Say this year:

Titans pick a Roosters junior (rule enforced) they pick again a Panthers junior (rule enforced)...etc

There is no benefit for the first pick then.

I say each year players nominate for the draft and the clubs have one player they can acquire into their top 25 (make it top 30 but only count the salaries of the top 25) if they want, then the rest go into the draft. Teams get 3 picks each first round is lottery in bottom 4 and the rest to 12 to 1 then the next two rounds go 16 to 1. Teams don't have to make picks. Any players not drafted can be signed in a free agent window for two weeks, otherwise they go unsigned and can decide to play QLD-NSW cup, NYC, ESL etc but can't enter the NRL again until the next season draft.

The draft would contain all players nominating for the NRL including NSW cup, QLD cup, ESL, rugby players or NYC.

If a player is needed due to injuries or high profile comes along, a team signs him but forfeits their first two picks next season.

I think an external draft has to go hand in hand with a trade system. Drafting a talented 18 year old kid and signing him for 3 years is potentially great for a struggling team but if that kid wants to play for a different club he will leave at 21 and play his best footy elsewhere. AFL clubs are lining up to take back all the Gold Coast Suns kids that want to return to their native states next year. Think of a kid that grows up in Brisbane and gets drafted to Melbourne. No surprise if he wants to go back home to QLD and play. The club that drafts this player should have the chance to trade him before he becomes a free agent in order to get some value from him. Chances are he won't play a big role in the first year at the club and maybe not the second either. So if he leaves after year 3 what was the point having him in the first place?
Plenty of NRL fans hate the fact a club can develop a player and when his contract ends every other team has an equal chance of signing him. All the effort can be gone for nought. Having a draft without a trade won't change that problem.

Dopey idea IMO. We are I think starting to see a few clubs (mine included) take some initiative in truly developing their own pathways and I think this long term has a great flow on effect to the biggest game of them all, international football. Why should a young fellow from NZ have to move overseas? What if he's not ready for that change in lifestyle? Vice versa for an Australian?

Moreover, why do we want a system that promotes tanking? You see it in MLB where clubs who are 3-4 games back give up at the trade deadline, sell off a couple of marquees for a couple of draft picks.

I like the fact we don't have a draft and we don't have in season trades (to the degree other codes do). It allows a club to create its own identity. Clubs who don't have a strong geographic catchment can still, and have still, succeeded with good scouting networks and strong offers of welfare and development for youngsters to join them. Ergo, I just don't see the problem in anyway shape or form with what we have.

100% agree with this. I love seeing clubs with a local flavour. It's one of the main reasons i want to see the warriors team full of kiwis and performing well. There is just something about watching a team like that play which i enjoy (and yes i realise the irony of this coming from a storm supporter).

Hopefully in the future we see a similar situation develop in Melbourne. We should be encouraging teams to develop juniors and to keep local juniors in that area.

Edit: The thing is the we know why some clubs struggle. Look at the Panthers. There is no lack of juniors in that area, the problem is with poorly run clubs surviving on bread crumbs and having no idea how to recruit players or coaches.

In what way is this true? As far as i can tell the NRL is one of the most even comps in the world. We actually have a pretty good variety of teams winning the comp as well (yes some teams dominate more than others but we have had some variety of winners in the last 10 years).

Which comp that has a draft should we model ourselves after has a more even comp than we do? The AFL isn't, the NBA isn't and i don't think the NFL is really either.

Do you actually follow the NBA at all? Every year there are a bunch of teams tanking. Not 1 or 2 but more like 8 or more. It pisses me off because the team i support is often in this position (and never getting better).

If you're going to pick an example to follow how about you find one that actually supports what you say.

The NBA has lots of shit teams because of the soft as dogshit softcap. With payrolls ranging from 45m to 110m. Hopefully after this lockout there is a rocksolid NFL style cap, the teams will be much more equal then. That's the reason for so many poor performing teams. I follow the NBA, tanking is pretty non existant. The shit teams lose because they are shit. Sacramento's payroll is almost a third of LA's.

The teams that have owners willing to go into the luxury tax are the teams that win, it's that simple.

With a proper hardcap there won't be tanking.

The NFL has a draft and sees little tanking because it's so damn even.

Proper hard cap (that the NRL already has) + a lottery = no tanking.

I'm sorry but if you actually believe this you're opinion is really worth nothing on this subject. It's not even like it's a controversial topic, on the NBA forums i read most people openly admit that quite a few teams tank.

The comparison isn't valid anyway. Tanking in the NBA is far more valuable because there are only 5 players per team. Just getting that one superstar can put a club at the top for a long time.

So i don't know for sure that tanking would translate to the NRL.

I'm still firmly agaisnt the draft for other reasons.

Not a fan of a draft. Sides should be rewarded for developing their junior bases not punished. RL is a very community based game unlike the AFL there is a strong attachment to the clubs and their local communities and fanbases.

I think the only draft that would work for League is for those off contract, not for juniors. I wouldn't mind seeing one introduced with a transfer window to get all of that shit out of the middle of the season.

and we don't want that tanking rubbish to happen in our game

does tanking happen in the NFL and NBA or only AFL?

Ive never seen it in a huge way in NFL

most sides who have the #1 pick are honestly just hopless, they dont need to tank, its a different structure in NFL though in terms of the draw, also the way the contracts are structured, if you play bad enough to tank, chances are you'll get cut and be out a job, and when you cut from the worst team in the comp, few others come knocking at your door

often players in the bottom sides in the final rounds are playing for their professional lives
