A Draft?

I will never support a draft.

I want the players that come through and represent the Warriors, as far as is prudent/possible, to have a local background and be developed by our organisation.

Creates far more pride and passion than being forced to sacrifice the flower of your youth team in favour of some Aussie blow-ins. Or for Aussie teams, vice-versa.

I think the Bennett interview was taken a little bit out of context. He was talking about an external draft and not an internal draft. He mentioned that clubs like Penrith could use their own juniors as automatic selections in an external draft. Bennett thought clubs were wasting too much money signing up teenage players with potential who have not made in into the NRL. Some over $100k a season. Very good ideas and it’s something I’d like the IC to pursue when they take over,

I agree with that as well. If the Reds come in then the only way they will become successful and be seen as part of the community is if they have a fair amount of local products coming through the system

I'm a fan of the NRL introducing a draft. Implementing one would require a tonne of restructing lower tier league and even more money. But to have a salary cap and no draft limits the effectiveness of the salary cap.

Which from memory is a change of position to when they ruled it out altogether.

That said any draft system has got to allow for clubs to keep quite a few of their juniors. It's rather comical and sad in the AFL when even the top Western and South Australian juniors are forced to go to Victoria because some Melbourne fumbleball team tanked the previous year.

There would have to be heavy emphasis on local teams getting junior preferences.

true but if you look at just the comments and not the article, it doesn't sound like he is overly for it.

Sounds like he is saying if we can work out a good way of doing like unlike last time and unlike the AFL's one, we will look at it.

Seems Bennetts love affair with the NFL continues. If we introduce a draft it will shake up the structure of the game massively.

* As has been pointed out, the funding arangments between clubs and lower level leagues/grades would be disrupted.
* The ARL would have to fund ALL junior areas, which would mean maybe less club grants (but more money from other sources for clubs)
* Draft picking structures will be a nightmare to sort out.

Not saying its good or bad, just that it will require a major shake up. I don't think we need that on our plate at the moment. The game has enough on its plate. I think we need the commission first, negotiate a solid TV deal and determine 2 expansion locations. Then have the commission work over the next few years and come up with desired structures and changes to the game going forward.

The IC isn't up and running, and there is only 18 months to go on our current TV deal. Draft may happen, but its one step at a time.

Bear in mind, I haven't thought this through too deeply, so there might be something preventing this from happening, but the AFL (I begrugingly admit) keep their seasons interesting by having a draft to mix the players around.

Perhaps this could enrich the weaker teams and give them new talent to play with. While I find it incredibly humorous, I'm starting to get tired of seeing the Sharks in the bottom eight.

If there was a draft, what would be the point of clubs investing thousands upon thousands into juniors?

I think the way it works is if you can't fit a Draft pick under your salary cap, they go to another club that can. The draft is just there to give the club the opportunity to get them in the first place.

I could be wrong about that. As a Queenslander, I don't exactly keep up with the AFL.

AFL clubs don't have strong junior setups like we do.

Also they need a draft or else the QLD/NSW teams would have no-one to play for them.

Wasn't this discussed like two weeks ago?

You can't have a salary cap without a draft but the junior set up of the NRL clubs currently means it is not feasible for a draft to work.

Also in sports that use draft systems teams who are out of finals contention throw games just to gain a higher position in the draft. Could result in blowout scores, smaller crowds and it would damage the spirit of the game.

Are you saying that because you honestly believe it or because the AFL does it? (The latter I wouldn't blame you for)
I barely knew afl did it, I know many american sports do it.

It sucks, we complain how players aren't loyal any more and how few one-club men there are, well drafts kill any chance of a player showing loyalty as they don't even have a choice in the matter. Imagine growing up in Newcastle (for example), you're a knights fan and junior, then one day Roosters are able to choose you and you have to switch clubs. It's pathetic and I honestly people believe it's a good idea!

Draft sucks.

I want want to see Brisbane boys get the chance to play for Brisbane. North Queensland boys playing for the cowboys andvgold coast kids playing for the titans. The salary cap sorts the rest out.
