I think if it's only 1 license on offer, The GC must get the nod, but some of this attrocious!

Benji is a Kiwi, Mat Rogers is a NSWelshman and only played for the Queenslanders because his old man sent him to baording school on the GC.

Is Geoff Bell still around? Petey Jackson? Tony Hearn?

If we are including ex-players, I can already think of atleast 1 Rothmans Medallist and kangaroo tourist-David Fairleigh.

John Carlaw came from Ourimbah,

I'm not sure about Geoff Bell, I though he was from Cairns. He mustve played for Gold Coast later on.

mate go and do some research the gold coast could of had half the perth and mariner players, News and the Nrl were pushing them hard to merge with the mariners before season 1998 kicked off.
.

Mate I dont know what you're talking about, Ive done as much research as I can. Im pretty sure it was the Crushers that wanted to merge with Gold Coast.

Perth didnt want to merge, Mariners wanted to merge with Newcastle. Then they both were axed.

And does anyone remember the East Coast Tigers plan? There were plenty of options for a strong 2nd SE QLD. Obviously the NRL didnt wanna know about it.

Don't rubbish the Mariners.

They had no future Diehard.

In a fore-runner to the later demise of other non-Sydney clubs, the Mariners were dumped without any assessment of the ability of their region to support two clubs or whether Sydney had too many clubs.

Subsequent attempts were made to merge the Mariners with the ARL's Gold Coast Chargers, however this did not eventuate. The Hunter players and staff became available to the other remaining Super League clubs including Melbourne.

The core of the team's talent were snapped up by Melbourne Storm - Brett Kimmorley, Scott Hill, Richard Swain, Paul Marquet, John Carlaw and Robbie Ross all headed to rugby league's new outpost and 18 months later achieved what many saw as an improbable premiership victory. Kimmorley and Hill also became NSW and Australian representative players, while Richard Swain gained Test recognition with the New Zealand Kiwis.

The better than expected finish to the season also deflected talk of mergers with the rapidly ending South Queensland Crushers and Hunter Mariners. The Chargers were included in the NRL's twenty team competition for 1998 and with their finances now in a sound position, home crowds improving and pleasing on field results the club seemed on the rise.

While the Chargers thought they had another season to position themselves for the 2000 14 team competition, they ultimately paid dearly for their 1998 results. The St George and Illawarra joint venture triggered further concessions between News Ltd and the ARL. News Ltd withdrew its financial support of the Adelaide Rams, and the ARL - who were still in control of the Chargers - decided to close the Gold Coast club down.

Not that hard to find really mate. Its all there at RL1908.com

The East Coast Tigers - Balmain Tigers/Gold Coast Chargers/East Coast Tigers merger was supported by the ARL. Problem was the Broncos & News Ltd opposed it, and with the Broncos practically running the QRL the QRL also opposed it saying it won't be good for the game.

That was the Broncos fault.

Will the Gold Coast be recruiting Miami's star quarterback?
He wouldn't be able to tell the difference if he ended up playing in the NRL one day - same name, colours, etc.

Everyone keeps saying this, but do you even know what the Dolphins NFL team looks like? There was even a picture of it earlier in the thread for you to see but you were too bloody stupid to work it out. They are nothing alike.

A more accurate statement would have been - are the Roosters going to be signing the next big start out of France? Same name, colours etc.

I think both teams should be in...cant see why there is fighting between the two? They both have exceptional cases. Less Sydney teama I say!

The problem is, is that if both teams are included the comp is still not even. 17 teams, that means we have to put up with the bye. I dont have a problem with both teams, but if there was team they have to pick it would be the Central Coast. It would be good they brought them in and relocate a team to the Gold Coast.

How bout this merge them both and call them the Coasties!!!. thats the 16th team. :D

I think they should both be in too. But the Central Coast will be.

When I meant a couple of cracks, I meant Giants, Seagulla, Chargers. They could not get it right and they had millions in the bank. The point being they could not translate that in to success on the field. I lived on the GC for about 17 years and tweed heads is considered a part of the Gold Coast. Basing a point of an argument on geographical location is ludicrous. I am sure they will get the 16th spot. My original point still is the same, I am yet to see anything different that will make things different. The rugby league board is still basically the same as when the Chargers were put to their grave.

You couldve come up with a better list than that. Marshall is actually a Kiwis, Ikin has just come out of retirement, and Bell is originally from North Qld, and also Rogers is originally from NSW only spent 2 years in the Gold Coast.

I'd add Luke O'Dwyer to that list, Parramatta picked him from Gold Coast.

Diehard your the geniused one, how can a team be dead if they play in 4 different grades?(Premier League, Jersy Flegg, SG Ball, Harold Matthews Cup).

By the way, can you tell me any notable juniors to come out of the Gold Coast?Central Coast-Matt Orford - carving it up with the storm, would be playing origin if it wasnt for injury.
Mark O'Meley - in sensational form and current NSW rep
Glenn Morrisen - top lock forward unlucky to miss Origin this year and unfortunately out for the season.
Paul Stringer - excellent prop forward for eh Rabbitohs
Brett Kearny - excellent intechange impact player for the Rabbits

Who do the gold coast have? Wes Patten?

Correct me if Im wrong, but off the top of my head I remember Jamie Goddard, Matt Seers and Ben Ikin. All who played for the bears!

I believe current Gold Coast juniors in the NRL are Ben Ikin, Jamaal Lolesi, Chris Flannery and Scott Sattler. IIRC Goddard played his junior RL in North Queensland and was recruited by the Seagulls. Seers is from NSW and played fullback for NSW in State of Origin 1995.

Central Coast juniors - besides Orford, O'Meley, Morrison, Stringer, Kearney, there is also:
John Carlaw - Dragons centre
Chris Heighnington - Wests Tigers prop
Ian Henderson - Roosters hooker
Kevin Henderson - Knights wing
Karl Lovell - ex Parra backrower
Ryan O'Hara - NSW prop
Joel Penny - Cronulla? fullback/half
Justin Ryder - Wakefield/ex Knights winger
Wes Tillott - Souths fullback
Jake Wall - Balmain NSWRL forward
Danny Williams - Storm forward
Grant Wooden - ex Manly prop
