The motivation? Is it not obvious?

The leading team has to keep scoring to win, the trailing team has a better chance to get back into the game. This puts the onus on attacking football rather than clocking off at the 55 minute mark. It would also reduce blowouts and make games more unpredictable.

Juno, what you say is true, but is it a bad thing?

If the salary cap is an inter-season leveler, this would be an in-game leveler. An inter-game version could also be used to give Cronulla hope towards the end of the season. It's socialism meets rugby league.

Only problem, I think the TAB would block the idea....

Imagine being up 17-16 in the Grand Final, scoring a try in the 77th minute, only getting 3 points for it. The opposition then try a short kick off, grab it, and end up scoring down the other end, gaining 5 points and the win for no other reason than they were behind.

Which begs the question, why would you reward the team that's behind and punish the team that's in front?

The merits of the idea are fundamentally flawed. Teams can win simply based on the order they score tries, even if they score as many tries and convert as many goals each other.

Where is the merit in that?

Saying this idea is idiotic is being polite. It's the dumbest idea I've ever heard for the game.

miguel - want an honest critique?

Trailing teams already often get massive momentum swings as it is in the modern game. We don't need to be awarding them extra points or deduct points from leading teams to artifically keep scores lower.

Every now and again fans actually do want to see 60+ scorelines and that becomes far less likely over time as this rule would keep most games under 30 or 40 points max.

What about a rule that in the last 10 minutes whatever points the side losing scores is worth whatever the side winning is leading by +1. Like in the TV show talkin bout your generation.

OR the side losing can provide an alternative referee at halftime. Like the Raiders will have Skeepe travel with them ready to tag in if we are down at halftime.
