Innovators...

Oh, so you weren't talking about the technique which has caused this terrible injury, which seems to be used by other clubs aswell.

You were talking about other techniques that have come under scrutiny before.

Glad we could clear that up.

I don't think the Storm players went in to cause this kind of injury. Whether or not McKinnon "made it worse" by ducking his head is completely irrelevant; he should not have been put in that sort of position to begin with. The Storm are well-known, rightfully so, for pushing the boundaries as far as they will go with regard to tackling techniques, and it is not unfair for them to be scrutinised for it.

These sorts of tackles are, unfortunately, becoming more and more a part of the game, and should have been stamped out long ago. It is extremely unfortunate that it's basically taken a worst-case outcome to get the referees and judiciary to look at the problem, when this situation could and should have been avoided to begin with.

Smith should not have carried on like that, whether he knew about the severity of McKinnon's injury or not.

Reward proper technique and classic tackling styles rather then punish them by allowing quick PTB's and it may help

Yes please.

The whole f**king wrestling bullshit came about because of legs tackles, one-on-ones and one high one low tackles being penalised for laying on too long, while gang tackles and wrestling techniques are allowed to last up to ten seconds before the play-the-ball. Not to mention those stupid dominant calls.

Doctors will always give the worst case scenario. At this point the talk has been of recovery times, just be happy the words quadriplegia haven't been mentioned

Alex will recover. How much he will recover is still to be determined

Actually, it's only one word.

exactly. stop the lifting tackle.

smith was trying to point out that lifting tackles were happening all game, and that the ref should be looking at them all

1st minute - penalised

20th minute - unpenalised

43rd minute, after seeing a player leave the field for the same thing, here, the blokes boot is above a tacklers head.... unpenalised

Heres hoping for a Ben Ross like outcome, surprise everyone, and do things the doctors said he'd never do.

best wishes to alex, and his family

Exactly. Consistency.

Solution: the MRC should review these too. Start cracking down on the tackle by making an example of all the players (Bronwhich bros included) and not just the one that caused the injury.

Mate - the issue here is if the guy will ever walk again, not if he will play again. He's suffered a catastrophic spinal injury and only has movement in his right arm and no feeling in his legs. The doctors are talking up to two years to see if there is any improvement. Can't believe people on here are still talking about his possible playing future. It's moved way beyond that.

Feel terrible for the bloke and wishing him all the best.

For McKinnon himself if there's a small glimmer of hope that he can play again ( no matter how remote) it might be what he needs to keep pushing forward with his recovery.

Hope is a powerful thing.

On the other hand he may never want to play again and I'd respect that fully.

It was still petty of Smith to complain when a bloke is lying on the ground with a serious injury. Inconsistent calls happen in every game. And yes, those Knights players should have been penalised. Hopefully we'll see a crackdown after what has happened to McKinnon. The rule has been in place for a decade or more. Enforce it you pink pansies.

Smith is the captain, he is allowed to ask questions.
Forget all that and lets worry about Alex and the young kid who put him in this awkward position.

Both will be scarred for life.

If you want to blame anyone out of all this and i am getting sick and tired of hearing their dumb-arse comments, lets blame Sterlo for making comment about Smith, who is he to judge, or even say that Smith should not have asked the question, now the whole thing has blown out of proportion.
And Mortimer, for not thinking and trying to turn the game into rugby union with a 5 metre rule .
And now Roy Masters, by saying the cannonball tackle caused this incident. really Roy, how dumb are these ex=players and when will the game maybe even sue them for loss of business because of their dumb remarks, or better still get rid of them, they are doing so much harm to the game, "click" ? that was the sound of another family closing the door and walking away from grass-roots.

There wont be a code the way these ex-players are killing it, and what is worse, they have not got a clue what they are doing.
What is the saying, "Forgive my children as they dont know what they do".
That line from God was made for rugby league.
The game will be dead in five.
Bellamy probably told him that.

Word for word.

Interesting too see if the Storm keep doing it though.

they said the same about ben ross. as much as i thought he was mad, he did it.

hope for the same outcome.

thankfully he is young and fit, which will give him a better chance i guess

Thanks for the photo's Northwest, and this is why we have to stop playing the blame game, and ex-players rushing in to rewrite the rules over this and Roy Masters like a old fossil having to put two cents in while the game has worked overtime to make changes.

For the first time in our history, the people with voices are killing our game. The media, the ex=players, the callers, are all adding little by little to the fall of our code.
Same as they said the biff at Manly had no effect. ? really, then why are blockbusters only getting 15 thousand crowds.
Why is Sydney finding it hard to grow crowds.
I think we all know the answer , and it is now coming back to haunt us, along with other issues unseen.
No other code has as much bad press written about their codes as does rugby league.

Is why the calls for change were made, it could be too late.

A bad injury doesn't necessarily make the tackling technique 'worse'.
A slight movement, a split second's reaction time, a certain amount of players in the tackle and so on can turn a rather common tackle into a serious injury. This was a bad tackle but there have been a lot like it that haven't resulted in broken necks. In my opinion any tackle that has someone lifted upside down and dropped on their head is worse as the intent and time to pull out of it is much greater.

This tackle can't get any more weeks than deliberate elbows to the head, which was 7 weeks last I checked.

name one tackle youve seen with a worse outcome

as said earlier, spectaucular sure shouldn't be the measurement.

when using the word "worse", the ultimate result should be the main criteria

really? even at this point you can't concede/acknowledge that the wrestle has not brought one positive thing to the game?

yo're more interested in deflecting blame from those that are to blame for its implementation

My son fractured his C3 and C4 in a car crash, it bent his spinal cord.

Was in an induced coma for two weeks, took him 12 months to learn to walk again and he still has close to no feeling in his left hand (that is he can feel something, but I could burn or put a nail through it and it would not hurt). This was 4 years ago.

He considers himself lucky, he walked out of a spinal unit, most do not.
Sounds like Alex is in for a similar path.

They will not know how the operation went until they wake him from the induced coma. Very long road back to normality.

My son used play League, not anymore, still only 25.

Like I say he truly considers himself lucky, you spend 12 monnths in a spinal unit, you make friends etc, who ha it far worse than him. The majority come out in Wheelchairs, few walk.

Best of luck to your son in wherever life takes him. Sounds like he's got the right attitude.

Alex losing his career is a really horrible thing, but if he can walk out of this and that's all he's lost then I'm sure he'll be able to find the silver lining. He's going to have a lot of people supporting him, and putting all league talk aside I think we all hope that he ends up as one of the lucky ones too.

He's still young. There's so much more life has to offer him and I'm sure once he gets through this he'll make the most of it.

And where exactly have I done that.

I was simply pointing out that to blame this type of tackle technique on the Storm is completely incorrect.

Yep, have a mate who broke his back a few years ago snowboarding, still does alot of rehab etc and has partial movement (nerves to some quad muscle but not others) but is almost certainly in a wheelchair for life, horrible.
