So good to see him smiling and in good spirits. I know he would've had hard days, and there will be more, but he seems to have the right attitude. Don't know if I would be strong enough to get through that, but I reckon Alex is.

Really great to see him in high spirits.

I'm also really happy the club did his first interview. I feel this has been sensationalised by the media too much as it is and I can't even think what they'd do if one of them got the first interview.

Mainstream media shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the bloke. I'm dirty on the report of him being a quadriplegic ?.the media are dogs

The club has done an absolutely amazing job of managing the media around the whole situation. Nothing but respect.

Yep very well handled by the media and knights. How good was it to see him smiling the whole way through, that was a moment for me.

I feel he is going to be role model for many young people who feel life is too hard or that they are owed something by society. He is a champion and I am smiling like Cheshire Cat over this interview.

Great interview. He is a remarkable young guy. Huge props to the knights as well, all your support obviously means so much to the bloke.

Best of luck Alex!

I've been giving this a lot of thought lately, and I've realised that if someone had have told me a month ago that McKinnon would not only have feeling in his legs but would be attending a game I would have thought they were batshit crazy. I've kinda realised through this that winning games of footy isn't the most important thing in the world, and despite some of the shitty performances, the injuries, the off field ownership woes, etc, we've been really lucky with this kid's potential for recovery and walking again and that's really the most important thing.

Great News for Knights

While the Nathan Tinkler drama has cast a dark shadow over the Knights, I do have some outstanding news for Newcastle fans. The club is being cautious not to get too excited, but injured forward Alex McKinnon is making outstanding progress in his rehabilitation. McKinnon still faces a long battle at a rehab facility at Ryde in Sydney’s west, but the club is being told there is now a huge chance he will be able to walk again – albeit with a walking stick. The brave Knight is regaining more and more feeling throughout his body in an excellent sign that his injuries won’t be as severe as some early reports may have indicated.

This is great to hear. As bleak as everything else appears, really puts all the drama into perspective. Hopefully he's well on the way to an unexpected recovery

8 week update
http://www.newcastleknights.com.au/news/2014/05/21/mckinnon_s_eight_week_update.html
The Newcastle Knights spoke to Alex McKinnon for an update on his recovery, eight weeks after he suffered a spinal injury in Melbourne.

Alex has reasonable movement in his upper limbs but as yet still no fine motor control use of his hands. He still has no consistent controlled movement below his waist however he has had some weak signs of lower limb muscle contraction over the last week, which of course is a positive sign.

As a result, his physiotherapy now includes an exercise, which involves an assisted partial straightening of his legs (which Alex refers to as a ‘squat’ in his update) on a tilted table that removes the resistance of gravity.

Alex remains upbeat and focused on his rehabilitation but also realistic that his recovery is unknown for up to two years.

Id cop 100 loses like last week if it meant Alex would be back on his feet again

Good to have some good news around the club

I know we say it all the time, but what an absolute champion. If anyone is going to walk again it's him. The moment he gets back on his feet (and I'm positive he will be it in 2 years or 20) it's going to be an amazing moment.

I still can't really believe this has happened. I mean I know we've had terrible season both on and off the field, but somehow all of that seems irrelevant and petty when we then think about what's happened to this bloke.
