Haven't been around here for a long time though felt the urge to come and comment here.

It is so sad what has happened and I hope this poor bloke can recover from this for his normal life and if chooses football career. He is in my thoughts and prayers.

All the best Alex McKinnon and I hope you recover to enjoy a happy healthy and successful life.

All the best to Alex in his recovery. The look on his face after the tackle was heart wrenching. Have to spare a though for Jordan as well, I imagine he would be devastated.

Im an Eels supporter and just wanted to say that i am praying for the young bloke. I know we all get so caught up in wanting to win and our team doing well but it all gets put into perspective when something like this happens. Hell Id even take another wooden spoon if it meant that the poor kid would be ok. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Yeah it's pretty hard to find words to say about this.

Obviously all our thoughts are with Alex to get back to 100% as soon as possible.

Kinda hard to think about our game thus Sunday. I imagine it will be quite difficult for our boys to get prepared mentally also.

I've been feeling sick all day due to the empathy I'm feeling for Alex. Such a terrible situation and he seems like a good bloke. I really hope he gets to lead a healthy life after this.

I seriously can't believe the merkins that are Melbourne Storm have asked the NRL to allow Maclean to play this weekend.

Newcastle Knights will honour injured Alex McKinnon with a special tribute on their playing strip

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
MARCH 27, 2014 1:45PM

NEWCASTLE Knights players will dedicate the rest of the season to injured teammate Alex McKinnon with a special tribute on their playing strip as the young backrower recovers from a horrific neck injury in a Melbourne hospital.

Knights players will take the field on Sunday against Cronulla with McKinnon’s name and club number 232 specially embroidered on the front of their jumpers as a mark of respect for the 22-year-old former Aberdeen junior.

The Knights trained for the first time on Thursday morning since Monday night’s clash against the Storm and the tackle that left McKinnon with neck fractures and in an induced coma in The Alfred Hospital.

After the session, captain Kurt Gidley said the squad will be dedicating the remainder of the season to their teammate and admits the Sharks game will be full of emotion for the players.

“I’d like to think we’ll be playing the rest of the year (for him),”Gidley said.

“He’s a champion young fellow Alex, he’s well-liked throughout the team, he lives and breathes his footy and it will certainly be a tough time for him going forward with his rehab.

“But he’s got the full support of us as players and I’m sure everyone from Newcastle.”

Asked about the emotion within the playing group, Gidley said: “Everyone is still in a bit of shock at the moment because we haven’t seen him since he left the field.

“I’d imagine seeing him in person would be fairly confronting.

“All our thoughts are with him and his family and we’re looking forward to playing this week and playing with pride.

“There’s been great support from fellow players in the NRL, clubs, from people who don’t even know Alex out there, sponsors. It’s been fantastic.”

In a boost for the Knights’ hopes against the Sharks, fullback Darius Boyd trained strongly and appears a certain starter.

Rise For Alex

Thu 27th March, 03:01PM A A

The Newcastle Knights will ‘Rise for Alex’ at Sunday’s round four game against the Cronulla Sharks at Hunter Stadium.

From Sunday, all Knights’ NRL jerseys for the remainder of the season will carry Alex’s name and debut Club number (#232) on the chest pate.

The number 16 jersey, which Alex was wearing in Monday night’s game, will be retired for the season. David Fa’alogo, who was named in 16, will now wear 18.

A number of junior rugby league players from Alex's junior club Aberdeen, will form a guard of honour when the team runs out on Sunday. As the Knights and Sharks are on the field, the crowd will be asked to ‘rise for Alex’ and applaud.

Messages of support for Alex and his family can be emailed to knights@newcastleknights.com.au. All messages we receive will be given to Alex and his family at the appropriate time.

Currently the Club's energies are directed to help Alex and his family in any way possible, however, when the time is right, the Club will look at ways the community can assist Alex and his family.

There are no further updates at this time in regards to Alex’s condition. He remains in a critical but stable condition in a Melbourne hospital.

A loud and proud 'Alex McKinnon' chant going around the stadium is my hope for the day. The boys will be proper fired up. I hope Cronulla are ready. Some great weather would be grand and i reckon a massive turnout is on the cards. Could go close to sell out given what transpired this week. This has moved this town in ways you can't put into words.

Really feeling for Alex and his family. Critical but stable with not much else said.
I hope it works out for him ad his family.

Been trying to avoid it but feel I need to say something about the tackle.
Yeah, in many cases that would have ended up ok.

But ...
<rant>
3rd man in, between the legs lifting - this has been brought up before.
Bennett mentioned it last year and disagreed with it but said that since the rules were there to permit it we'd do it too. He commented that the Refs could be calling held earlier so the player is stopped but not put down. It's difficult to assess when held is held with the game now.
It's a typical slow-down tactic to make sure you put the player down and roll him on his back if you can. It's also much more potentially dangerous.

This could just be a really unlucky incident but, regardless, I think we are doing the game a benefit with both speed and safety if we try and take steps, if we can, to draw a better line. </rant>

Im just surprised the Storm would think that would be good for the kid...

He would be feeling like absolute shit right about now and i cant imagine how tough it would be for him to run on this week.

I would have thought theyd give him a week in NSW Cup, just to get his head straight away from the media. Give him something to focus on without all the preasure.

Nice touch by the knights to retire the 16 shirt for the rest of the year and have his name embroided on all the players shirts..

Thoughts and prayers go to Alex and his family.

Hope the crowd chants Mckinnon instead of Newcastle during the game.

It would be a nice touch and motivation for the players to hear his name throughout the game.
