Absolutely shocked at the news. Can't fathom the enormity of the horror Alex, his family, his friends and his team mates have gone through the last seven days waiting for any good news, then this. There's just nothing that can be said to make any skerrick of difference to this situation.

My thoughts are with him and his family.

Feel quite sick from the news.

We all need to be there for Alex and the Team. Week in Week out, Win or Lose!!

I genuinely hope the people of Newy and surrounding areas make every effort to support the team and club by going out of their way to attend the home games en mass for the remainder of the year. No excuses. It has to be done.

I don't know how much it will cost or if it could be done, any chance we could get a McKinnon shirt/jersey done up for all the Fans by the club with all proceeds going to Alex and his family.

Wow, I never in a million years thought it would end up like this, I can't imagine what Alex and his family are wrestling with right now but I can only wish them the best at this time.

I hope the club provides some avenues for the fans to help and communicate with Alex, I'd love the chance to assist in some way.

Tough times ahead for all associated wit the club, results are irrelevant in 2014............

The club needs a number of this types of things because people want to help and connect.

I've never worn one of those arm bands, never my style, but I want to show my support and I reckon the footy community would get behind such a thing.

Not sure if it has been mentioned over here but a few people brought up the idea of Saints v Knights games being for an Alex McKinnon Shield. Surely people power could help this come to be I know so many people who would love to help and donate in any way they could.
Absolutely gut wrenching to see how it has transpired, the Rugby League community is behind Alex and the Knights during these tough times.

The diagnosis couldn't be permanent this early. Call me a deluded fool but I still think he's going to walk again one day. The kid is so tough and has so much support around him. It's probably just blind faith but it's probably all anyone has at the moment.

Mentioned this idea on the mighty Newcastle knights Facebook page as well as on the dragons forum and the response is unbelievable

Horrible horrible news. To think about what he had in front of him and it's all taken away and now he is reduced to being in a wheelchair and lost all independence.

Interesting point as there are similar comments in the NRL forum. There is a suggestion that the longer term diagnosis isnt confirmed, just his current state.

I am going to wait for his family to speak before I believe anything or offer any more comments.

Not much to go on but someone posted this in the NRL forum, obviously to be taken a grain of salt since we have no real official word on anything yet:

To everybody posting, reposting and sharing posts about recent news regarding Alex McKinnon.

MMM did a extensive interview and update regarding this.

Alex McKinnon has NOT been told he will be a quadriplegic!

He has been told that at this stage the diagnosis is quadriplegia.

At this stage his spine has been stabilised. His spinal cord is significantly damaged BUT was not severed.

The next step is flying him to the spinal unit in Sydney where they will begin looking at his spinal cord and how they can treat it.

The damage to his spinal cord at present is resulting in quadriplegia - but this is not to say that this is permanent. It may well be - but the Doctors are certainly not there at this point. They haven't even begun!

It was also made clear that the Doctors in these cases only talk to patients and family IN THE PRESENT - as the issues are serious and they can make no promises or guarantees - they don't get ahead of themselves and try to not let patients get ahead of themselves one way or the other. They are staying in the now.

I don't see that sensationalised social media can help Alex or his family and friends - especially when it's going in a completely different direction to what the Doctors and Specialists are themselves taking with Alex and his family!

Heart goes out to Alex, his family and all you great Knights fans.

It's just so tragic and it's the first time I've shed tears in a while.

Please don't abandon him when he needs you down the track. I know you wont due to the great nature of your fan base.

I sincerely hope in the future he walks again and serves as an inspiration for many.

Not sure if anyone's watching the Matty Johns show.

Aiden Sezer just got MOTM and showed his respects to McKinnon. Classy guy. Big fan of his before, even bigger one now.
