Marrons' (Lol telegraph) and Origin great Arthur Beetson speaks in support of Johns
June 14, 2010
Rugby league Immortal Arthur Beetson has thrown his support behind Andrew Johns, describing him as "always respectful".
Beetson, who along with the late Clive Churchill are the only indigenous players among the seven Immortals, yesterday hailed Timana Tahu's courage for walking out of the NSW camp over Johns' description of Maroons star Greg Inglis as a "black c . . .".
But while Beetson was quick to condemn racism, the Maroons great refused to criticise Johns.
"In my handlings with Andrew Johns every time I've ever met him he's been a very respectful bloke," said Beetson, who works tirelessly with indigenous communities in Queensland.
"I don't know what was said between him and Timana, maybe it was taken out of context."
"I don't know, but from all my dealings with Andrew Johns he's always been a very, very respectful bloke."
Although reluctant to comment at length over what he described as "second and third-hand" comments from Johns, Beetson said he was disappointed the Blues assistant coach had spoken in racial overtones, regardless of the context.
"Without a doubt (I'm disappointed). In the 21st century people need to grow up," he said. "But the world has changed a fair bit."
"I was just looking at Paul Hogan and a lot of his humour was based around the Greeks and Italians and racism, to a certain extent."
"I grew up in an era where that was a common thing and we had to laugh at each other, but the bottom line is it's a changing society and I just hope the rest of us changes with it."
Beetson hailed Tahu's stance, without condemning Johns.
"He has pretty strong feelings towards it. He's typical of a young Aboriginal bloke of today. He's really proud, which is how he should be."
"I applaud him for that."
