That’s why Griffin has been sacked, we’re not where we should be. This is what many of us have been saying, the performance isn’t up to our ability.
One win off second place in a 16 team comp with the injuries this team has had and the youngest team in the NRL. It cannot possibly have anything to do with the performance of the team.

Extending Hook made perfect sense. Without it he would have spent the year with speculation about his future and it would have been worse than it is now. It also undermines his authority with the players who know he may not be there next year. This has been repeated ad nauseam in other sports codes. Leave a coach with only a year left and it signifies the club has lost faith in them. Exhibit one, Wayne Bennett. The extension was the right thing to do, subsequent events don't change that.
No. It f**king didn't.

Speculation never stopped. It was f**king stupid... his initial contract with us hasnt even finished yet.

Can’t wait to see how the next couple years unfold.

If we start losing and the club turns to shit, who will they blame?

When does Gus become accountable

Sound like Griffin wasn’t a popular bloke. These rumours have been around for years.

We could still have Moylan! f**k.
Everyone loved him though. They all signed on go stay here so it must be true.

Gotta wonder what our side looks like if we sacked him last year. Where certain players careers would be.

We'll never know. But I think our roster would look pretty different. Here's hoping Mez, Tamou and Maloney were unhappy with Hook and come out and kill it for us now.

I don't see much sense in having Ciraldo long term. The only 1st grade NRL experience he has had is under Griffin, with his tactics and structures. I can agree with the rest of this year for the sake of continuity though.

I wonder who those senior players are who would leave if Griffin stayed?

Mansour, RCG, Edwards, Kikau, May and Yeo all re-signed under Griffin.

I'm guessing Merrin, Tamou, Cleary, perhaps Maloney?

Obviously Moylan wasn't a fan. Perhaps Peachey as well.

After the 60th minute yesterday, I turned to my wife and said the coach has to go. I think the fact that we've pulled the last two games out of the fire says everything about the ability within the player group.

We need a coach that can harness the immense talent in this club and turn it into the juggernaut it should be.

I apologise for going as far as questioning people’s bona fides.

However the decision is still completely baffling. It undermines my confidence in the management of the club substantially.

First, why on earth extend the guy last year for 2 more seasons. Surely whatever his problems are were evident last season (or at least suspected). Why now cost the club a shit load of money?

Also why make this decision 4 weeks out from the finals?

Furthermore, why wouldn’t any decent coach now want to join Penrith? Ivan Cleary’s reward for rebuilding the club and getting us to a PM is being sacked after a year with an injury crisis. Hook’s reward for getting us to the finals for 3 years in a row is to be sacked with 2 years left on his contract.

It is Bulldogs management type stuff.

nah Gus should be staying IMO, has helped build this squad we have, key re-signings with Sauce, Kikau and co.... he's holding his end of the bargain up..... not to mention the plethora of talent coming through the ranks now....

remember we just sacked a coach who has made finals every year he's been at Penrith and currently sits a win outside the top 4 with 4 weeks until finals..... its not like we've been sitting at the bottom of the ladder all season.....

I don't think he would do it (not his character IMO), but what if Hook being moved on meant Cleary commits to staying ???

hope Ciraldo goes well in his first game in charge - Titans beware!!!!!

He knows the players. The last thing we need is a new coach carving the roster apart

Definitely. The players we have and the talent they have we should be on the level of the Roosters, Souths and the Storm this year. Despite being a few wins off top spot we were under achieving.
