What's wrong with having a player who can play 80 minutes, come off the bench for someone, and run around tackling his arse off and making hit-ups for the rest of the match?

Nutley's strength is his ability to play 80 minutes. You put him on the bench, he is gone, because he loses his biggest advantage. He would have minimal game time, and zero impact. The bench is not a place for an 80 minute player - and the Australian bench is not a place for Nutley.

In a test match, the intensity is higher than a club match, so 80 minute players will tire out quicker than usual. This is where Nuttley comes into play.

Luke Bailey is an 80 minute player. He would be in the starting line-up. After about 20-25 minutes of test match intensity, he would be buggered. Enter Danny Nutley (OK, so Danny Nutley's not Luke Bailey, but he's the next best thing). Danny Nutley will come on for Bailey, which will result in the Australian team losing none of that "tackle your arse off" attitude.

Rich, that was the Australian "Schoolboys". Marshall played against the Junior Kiwis last year. There were about 8 New Zealanders in the Australian Schoolboys side. Rest assured that doesn't mean they will be playing senior rep football for the green and golds.
