Anzac TV war between codes

what has that got to do with what you're replying to :?

Basically I'm saying that the AFL have a solid base from which to promote the competition - all home teams games live (or close to) into home markets.

The NRL don't have this, so they should focus first on getting STORM games shown live (or at least on a 1 hr delay) into Melbourne before worrying about showing a Roosters v Dragons game that nobody in Victoria will even know is being played.

At the moment Storm fans can't watch any Channel Nine game live (apart from the Grand Final), why would they be interested in a Roosters v Dragons game being shown live when none of their own team's games are?

How about they just try and televise it in QLD and NSW first before trying to get us to believe they will show it nationally.

As pointed out by someone earlier, I was always embarrased that the only free to air option in QLD on ANZAC Day is catch and kick featuring two Melbourne teams.

No kidding. But that's the point league is run by a bunch of dumb fu*k soft co*ks!

Agree 100%. People say the ratings won't be great - but it's like saying "I'll never be good at tennis - so I'm not going to try". For too long we have had a defeatist mindset about how our game will be accepted.

In far north queenland we have had AFL garbage dished up to us every year live on Anzac Day for at least 10 years now. If you wanted League, you had to listen to ABC radio.

At the moment those abysmal alf ratings in Qld and NSW are giving alf that slight edge over NRL in terms of overall ratings. Imagine what difference 100k per game would do for NRL ratings over a year.

They are saying it will be live nationally and all everyone is worried about on here is Melbourne, last time I check us over here in WA are still part of Australia and I cant wait for this game. Will it rate as well as the AFL over here - No. Will anyone watch it at all - Yes. Is this better than nothing - Yes! Will it rate comparitively well to the AFL overall nationally - Yes.
I get the feeling sometimes on these forums that people are just looking for something to winge about, If we get a $1b TV deal you can be sure that there will be someone on here complaining that it wasn't $2b. If it's on live stop worrying about who isn't watching, just sit back and enjoy the footy!

you AFL fans say don't show the League because it will rate sh*t

why then show the AFL?

Because the AFL is in the position to guarantee live FTA coverage nationally in its broadcast deal. Regardless of ratings, Seven must broadcast a live game into every Australian state every Sunday afternoon and Ten must broadcast a live game every Saturday (or public holiday Monday) afternoon. Ten must broadcast Saturday night games live (or close to) into Sydney/Brisbane whenever the Swans/Lions are playing in that timeslot.

The Swans ratings into Sydney are fairly poor, yes. But that Sunday afternoon 1pm game that rated 54,000 was also broadcast live on Fox Sports commercial free. Also 1pm on a Sunday afternoon isn't the highest rating timeslot for any TV program.

Some of the Lions ratings into Brisbane aren't that bad though - the recent Thursday night game against Carlton which aired at 8.30 was very competitive and actually came 2nd in the timeslot over the 3 hour telecast.

My point if the NRL wants to maximise its coverage nationally, it needs to start by showing local teams into their cities, i.e. Storm games into Melbourne on FTA. Nobody in Melbourne is going to give two hoots about a Roosters v Dragons game when Storm Friday night games, public holiday blockbusters and even finals Nine have the rights to get aired after midnight. It's actually insulting to Melburnians to think they will tune into a live Roosters-Dragons game when Storm games are ignored time and time again. Once the Storm is getting live games on a regular basis, then try to expand the code by broadcasting some other games.

Perth isn't so much of an issue because the games can air live at 2pm and finish at 4pm. It's the 6.00pm news lead in that networks worry about so much. This is why Nine and Seven delay NRL/AFL games into Sydney/Melbourne every Sunday and time them to finish right on 6pm.

Something like Postcards or Millionaire Hot Seat at 5.30pm is going to attract a lot more viewers in Melbourne than NRL.

I'll be well pissed off if they show Saints Vs Chooks yet they refused to show Storm Vs. Dragons last week. Sure it was a News Ltd request that it wasn't shown live but it just adds weight to how spineless Nein really are!

It doesn't really matter if Nine show it or not in Melbourne, nobody will be watching. The Collingwood v Essendon Anzac Day game is a massive, massive event, gets a sell out crowd of almost 100,000 every year and attracts ratings second only to the Grand Final and maybe Preliminary Finals.

Why would Storm fans want to watch a Roosters v Dragons game anyway?

Similar to the AFL Anzac Day telecast in Sydney?

Because they prefer Rugby League over aerial ping pong?

I would watch it but it'd be a dog act to show that game live when they didn't show the Storm game live last week when they had the chance to do so and take advantage of no other sport on in Melbourne!

It'd be interesting to see how the NRL measures up against the AFL if they do broadcast it into the southern states.

Why would Carlton fans wanna watch the Collingwood v Essendon game?
Or St Kilda fans for that matter?
Or even Richmond fans?

In other words, many Storm fans would rather watch a RUGBY LEAGUE game than an AFL game. If you can't grasp this concept, I suggest you take your diatribe elsewhere

Fully agree.

Showing this particular game live in QLD and NSW every year should be the main priority.

But if they can show two fumbleball teams, fumbling away to test pattern ratings in QLD and NSW then why can't the NRL be shown in the southern states.

The bottom line is ANZAC Day RL should be live on FTA and be made a must-see event.

we don't give two f**ks about two Victorian teams playing so stop waffling on about how massive it is

half the country couldn't give a rats about it

It's great that they're thinking of showing the game live, but am I the only one who's had had an absolute gutful of seeing Easts on free to air?

You can bet Ch 9 are not thinking about showing it live nationally at all.

I think the only reason this game is being shown live is because it is on a Sunday and will not mess with Nine's normal scheduling. They're not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts.

Will they show the Anzac Day game next year on a Monday or the year after on a Wednesday?

Their normal scheduling on a Sunday afternoon is Survivor reruns, Antiques Roadshow and Postcards, with the NRL after the late night movie some time after midnight. If Nine are showing the Anzac game live, why don't they show it every Sunday?
