Anzac TV war between codes

In other words, many Storm fans would rather watch a RUGBY LEAGUE game than an AFL game. If you can't grasp this concept, I suggest you take your diatribe elsewhere

Of course it would be good for NRL fans in Melbourne to be able to watch this game live on FTA, but you are all missing the point.

Look at Channel Nine's recent history of broadcasting:

Broncos v Storm Semi Final in 2008: shown at 12:30am
Manly v Storm Grand Final Rematch: 12.15am
Storm v Dragons Good Friday afternoon blockbuster: shown at 11pm
Titans v Storm this Friday: 11.50pm
Every other Friday night game Storm play: 12.00am
Every Sunday afternoon game Storm play: 12.00am

The only games shown live in Melbourne are the Grand Final and the 3 State of Origins.

If Nine are finally deciding to show a regular season game live, and it involves the Roosters and Dragons, don't you realise that this is an insult to Storm fans who follow their team week in week out. Why should this particular match have live coverage when every major game Storm play that Nine covers is broadcast in the early hours of the morning?

The focus should be on showing some STORM games live in Melbourne to get the local fans to support their team, not Sydney based teams nobody cares about...

Their normal scheduling on a Sunday afternoon is Survivor reruns, Antiques Roadshow and Postcards, with the NRL after the late night movie some time after midnight. If Nine are showing the Anzac game live, why don't they show it every Sunday?

THE NRL is facing a daunting battle in its looming television war against AFL on Anzac Day.

Channel Nine will decide next week whether to show the Anzac Day match between Sydney Roosters and St George Illawarra at the SFS live and nationally - a first for rugby league.

The Daily Telegraph has figures suggesting the game could attract a bumper television audience around Australia of about 820,000 viewers.

However, the match will struggle to overcome the traditional Anzac Day AFL game between Essendon and Collingwood - to be shown live nationally by Channel Seven.

Last year, the Magpies and Bombers attracted a TV audience of 1.1 million nationally, peaking at 870,000 in Melbourne.

It is believed the NRL game would have about 375,000 viewers in Sydney, 275,000 in Brisbane, 80,000 in Melbourne, 50,000 in Perth and 40,000 in Adelaide.

Nine has already committed to showing the NRL game live, kicking-off at 4pm, throughout NSW and Queensland.

Matt Callander, Nine's executive producer of sport, said: "David Gyngell [Nine CEO] is away but we have had discussions [about the game being shown nationally]. I am still hopeful but nothing has been finalised just yet."

You might be rather surprised. I know if I wasn't going to the Storm vs Warriors game, I would be watching it.

Not everyone here in Melbourne is obsessed with afl.

I think the only reason this game is being shown live is because it is on a Sunday and will not mess with Nine's normal scheduling. They're not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts.

You can bet it will revert back to a PAY TV-only showing next year when the game is played on a non-Ch 9 broadcast day.

Ch 9 are as weak as piss and I'm yet to see anything of substance from Gallop and co. that changes my mind about them either.

The 1859 laws of Aust rules were simplified rugby & other English rules.

Aust rules fans outside of Victoria tell me that just about (if not all) subsequent rule changes since then have come out of Victoria, not the Aust (Vic) rules bodies in SA, WA, Tassie or anywhere else in Australia.

Same can't be said for RL and its rules (which any Brit, Kiwi or Frenchman will tell you) has been re-written over the past 40 years or more by and to suit Aussies.

What about Adelaide and Perth? And the regionals in between? There's be more Dragons and Chooks fans fling around Australia than Storm fans.

In fairness, aren't they thinking of showing the Storm's first game at AAMI Park live against the gate?

We need the Storm's away games on FTA at a decent time for sure, but we shouldn't be knocking nine back if we can get them to show a game in a decent timeslot.

GTV Nine has just released its program schedule for Anzac Day and it looks like Nine's programmers have given scant regard to Gallop's mastermind plan to have the Anzac Day afternoon NRL match screened live nationally.

Obviously it'd be great to have the game shown nation wide.. but imo, not against one of the AFL's biggest games of the seasons. It'd be cannon-fodder and a greater reason for Channel 9 in the other states to not show RL at reasonable times.
