Melbourne never deserved to be in the comp. The Reds should've been kept.

The club will always smell of Ribot.

A lot of their fans are tossers.

Any club that smells of Ribot is fine by me. He knows how to build a winning team. Maybe you could get rid of Fitzgerald and get John Ribot to help your club to a premiership and a winning culture.

I agree, the Reds should have been kept but they were sacrificed to make way for the NRL. Heaven forbid a Sydney club get the axe. Their 3,000 supporters (at the time)would get upset. 9,000 people at a Storm home game is better than 15,000 to a Sydney team's home game. 15,000 divided by 2 teams as opposed to 9,000 for 1 team, you do the math as to which team has a better support.

A Melbourne team was mooted as early as 1994 but the Super League war put a stop to that. The VRL in there wisdom (?) decided to align themselves with the ARL.

Year 11/12 Storm Challenge:

14 teams came together to play a modified version of Rugby League, being 7 players on the field at one time in 15 minute games. We saw some fantastic games of Rugby League, and the skill level of all students were of a great level.

Teams travelled from as far as Bendigo (Bendigo Snr College who provided 2 teams on the day), and Worawa Aboriginal College travelled from Healesville, and some local schools such as Cranbourne SC, Roxburgh College, St Bernard's College, Parade College, and Rosebud SC. Special mention must also go to the Mill Park students who also provided 2 teams on the day.

Roxburgh came up against Monterey, who managed to progress into the final defeating Roxburgh 18-16. In the other semi final, South Oakleigh defeated a very strong Bayside team 16-8. Both of the Semi finals were nail-biting affairs, and all the players really played out of their skins. This then pitted Monterey up against South Oakleigh in the final, and the players put on a fantastic game very fitting of a final. Possesion changed many times in a very tense game, with South Oakleigh running out winners in the end 16-8.

During the course of the day, we also had a 3-2-1 point system to determine the player of the tournament. The players who polled extremely well included Daryl (Worawa Aboriginal College), Johnson Reeves (Bayside SC), Ben Tupai (Mill Park SC), Nick Galley (St Bernard's College), Matt Komiti (Roxburgh College), David Harris (Parade College), Steve Haltin (Rosebud SC), and Mitchell Smith and Robbie (South Oakleigh). Congratulations must go to Harry Crowe (Rosebud SC) who won the title of Player of the Tournament and will win a football signed by the Melbourne Storm

there was also an ARL clinic that visited just a few days ago for holiday clinics....

the following article also has some info on the coaching development down there:

http://sportsaustralia.com/articles/apr06/artid5528.html

thats just a little about the development down there....i know there was an article a few months back that went into alot of detail on the new clinics and the fact that there have been more development officers deployed in victoria.

also this word document has lists of schools and other comps that are happening over the 2006 season

The storm have sponsors ATM the equal of the best 4 AFL clubs in Melbourne ,and matching some of the best in the NRL.
They are getting the game into the schools, they are now having school comps>the SOO got 14 pages in the herald sun last thursday.

The bloody Vic govt is contributing money to develop the game of rugby league(now an officially recognised sport in schools). They have a rugby league academy school( I think its called Athelstone ???High),that played in the Arrive alive cup.

Melbourne the 2nd biggest city with a population over 4 million and all the sponsorship moneys and a new $100m stadium, and development just now being pushed, the potential? compared to Wide bay,Central Coast and Mackay. Its a no brainer, you go where the population is ,where the sponsorship money is.Many of the sydney clubs would not survive without sponsorship money. You could get 10,000 at tamworth, does that mean you should have an NRL team there ?-its all about exposure including TV).
That is not to say I believe the Central Coast(Bears) still should have a side plus either Perth or Christchurch to make an 18 team comp in the future.
The licence for the storm is at last to the end of 2011,so they are here to stay.

It's nice to see a New South Welshman who can actually get over the delusions of granduer that many seem to possess up there and got over the fact that Melbourne are here to stay :D

Do you still have trouble sleeping at night re 1999?? That would have been a try regardless, you toss. And Craig Smith would've kicked it from the touchline, he didn't miss one from the sidelines during the finals. Ainscough just gave us an easier kick for the leading points scorer for the 1999 season. People just dislike us because we're successfull and every player (and coach for that matter) you named you would kill to have in your team. Smacks of jealosy to me........

Least Bellamy doesn't slap his players across the face.

I'm 100% sure very few supporters on here would want those piece of sh*t cats you just mentioned in their sides

these were the questions

gregstar said:
how many schools play league in melbourne?
how many rugby league clubs are there in victoria?
why have the crowds deteriorated every year since 2000 despite the team's continued strength?
would that team draw bigger crowds & more support if located in wide bay, central coast, mackay or brisbane?

shadow grinder did not answer them in his post

yep - it's time that you crept out the back door and gargled acid. your knowledge of anything remotely familiar to anything mentioned in these forums is on par with your ability to express yourself, which in itself is a direct reflection of your grey matter.

in short you're a spastic immitating a moron.

I am not the only one here in NSW that thinks they should stay.
Anyone in marketing knows you market your product to where the population is.If you ignore a state with nearly 6 million people, you deserve to wither on the vine.
otherwise we may as well put up a fence around sydney/illawarra and newcastle and play the game, and watch the sponsorship drain away, watch the other codes get even stronger.
I saw a crowd over 8,500 at Canbera in the 8 playing the eels desperate for a win in a top Stadium. The Raiders used to get crowds of 13,000 to 16,000 in the past, and they are essential to the NRL,so the Storm in foreign territory getting 9-10,000 in a dump of a stadium deserve support and staying in the NRL.

appreciate the effort grinder, but clinics & info days & subsequent follow-ups are not competition. this sort of activity should have been undertaken before the storm even commenced in the league.

the entire comp will be held on one day? and it hasn't even started yet? again - obviously it's something but i cant imagine the point of such a half-arsed approach.

you seem pretty cluey grinder - i'm sure you'll agree that this is p*ssweak. they are going to attempt to impart knowledge of rugby league onto teachers in 1 day? again - noble sentiments but half-arsed at best. they obviously don't expect more than a handful to rock up if it's to be held at the storm office & they want teachers to attend from all round the state?- no wonder it's free.

so 14 teams played 7 aside "mod"-league? forgive me but that isn't a comp which leads me into believing the storm are going to be harvesting juniors anytime soon - 9decades at best.

look - i admire the fact that there are some vicos who have taken to the game of league. but the level of support has remained basically at sh*thouse level for almost a decade. and this is insulting considering the cracking sides you've been lucky enough to have playing out of your city.

if the media gave the storm a similar shot as the lion or swans get in bris/syd things may have been different. but showing the odd origin live aint a substitute for showing every storm game each weekend at a reasonable hour, and other nrl games likewise.

the fact is - that team for all its success has gone as far with garnering support as it can go. they receive no help from the press. no help from television & that is a reflection of the broader community's attitude. no one expects league to overtake AFL but we expect it to get as fair a go as their code gets in syd/bris.

hmmmm....explain to me why in this city of 4 million, a club with sponsors equal to the 4 best AFL counterparts, and leading the comp, and being as strong as it has for almost a decade, is not making heavy inroads right now? it is after all a no-brainer (obviously), because with all this they should already be trouncing other club attendances then. why aren't they?

as for other markets - do you seriously think the storm wouldn't attract more supporters in wide bay? central coast? brisbane? and therefore do you think companies wouldn't be queuing up to sponsor said franchises?

come on
