total attendances for home games

mebourne storm - 63,325 averaging 9,046 people per home game

st george illawarra - 106,859 averaging 15,265 people per home game

yep - it's time that you crept out the back door and gargled acid. your knowledge of anything remotely familiar to anything mentioned in these forums is on par with your ability to express yourself, which in itself is a direct reflection of your grey matter.

in short you're a spastic immitating a moron.

Whats really funny is that you think thats good. hahahaha what a goose

no - what's incredibly hillarious is your response.

pity.
breeding licences may very well have spared us the misfortune that is you.

with any luck a far-sighted government will introduce these, thus sparing future generations a similar unpleasantness when your balls drop, in a decade or two.

i'm sorry - are suggesting that the game is struggling in sydney? have you seen the detail of these "school comps"? when is it (at the level they are) that you expect to harvesting juniors?

School competitions in Sydney are going fine, and are acctually growing, but you can't argue that there is also significant interest in Victoria at the moment. This term alone, over 19,000 kids throughout Primary and Secondary schools have been involved in Rugby League clinics and competitions.

gregstar said:
source & details please.

Its a joint $23 million investment for RL in Victoria between the Storm, ARL, NRL and Victorian government. Part of it is allowing RL into Victorian schools this year for the first time.

gregstar said:
hmmmm....explain to me why in this city of 4 million, a club with sponsors equal to the 4 best AFL counterparts, and leading the comp, and being as strong as it has for almost a decade, is not making heavy inroads right now? it is after all a no-brainer (obviously), because with all this they should already be trouncing other club attendances then. why aren't they?

Define heavy inroads? Clearly if they are getting major sponsors, increasing the amount of TV and radio time they get, slowly increasing their crowds again after a lull, and have more kids playing the game than ever before, they must be making significant inroads don't you think?

gregstar said:
as for other markets - do you seriously think the storm wouldn't attract more supporters in wide bay? central coast? brisbane? and therefore do you think companies wouldn't be queuing up to sponsor said franchises?

come on

But they aren't, the Storm are only behind Brisbane and the Bulldogs, and equal with the Roosters in terms of value of their sponsorships. So there are 11 other clubs, all from 'RL' areas who have sponsorships less than the Storm, so what makes you think that a franchise in any of those other areas could draw the same revenues as the Storm?

Don't you think part of the reason why the Storm can draw these sponsors is that, as shown by TV ratings for Origin, NRL Grand Finals and so on, there is significant interest in Melbourne for the Storm (interest and attendances are different things) plus they have the advantage of drawing attention in Sydney and Brisbane markets.

Gregstar thing is tho the storm havent had the funding or development officers provided to do it before this year.

there is a junior comp down there...i do not know how many teams as i dont know much about it....but it has been down there since before this season....i know one team is called the altona roosters? so maybe someone with more info regarding that competition could please help with some info. And as mentioned by another member there is actually a victorian team in the arrive alive cup....i think they even won a couple of games..might still be in it...?? i remember reading an article in bigleague about it...

Also the coaching courses are more then 1 day....i only picked a few quoties from a few articles....but there are other coaching courses....also with the big $23 million the storm received this year to help in development they got more development officers...

what we storm fans are basically trying to stress is that the storm have not had the funding or the support from certain outlets to allow them to be as successful as we all think they should be (crowd wise)....FINALLY this year we are seeing more schools invovled in gala days and also other comps and even a arrive alive cup team. We are seeing NRL getting some decent spots in the newspaper...and apprently the SOO 3 ads and storm ads are being shown during the AFL and players appearing on berts family feud....correct me if im wrong but this is prolly the best exposure they have received since they joined. I think its starting to pay off...and altho our crowds this year have been a bit poor...i think over the next 2-3 years they will increase for sure.

Here's a link to the Victorian RL site. While it's a definite sign we're moving in the right direction i'm sure numb nuts will denegrate it, say it's not enough and means nothing or some other predictable comment to that affect that we've come to expect from him

My AFL team has an RL team, I never thougth I'd live to see the day

I lived in Geelong for 13 years and gee how the culture must have changed for this regional community to embrace a Rugby League team

Here's what i thought was an interesting article from Gordon Tallis in his Courier Mail column. I had to laugh when i read the part that i've highlighted at the bottom. Big Gordie said exactly the same thing i've been saying all along about Sydanee supporters and i use the word 'supporters' very loosely ;-)

I WAS having a drink with Mal Meninga in Melbourne the other night and, guess what, he was mobbed. Now Mal is used to that sort of thing happening in Queensland and Canberra and especially in Papua New Guinea, where he is treated like some sort of god, but Melbourne? Surely not Melbourne where they're supposed to know nothing about rugby league?

Mal might have been surprised by the reaction but I wasn't. I've been down here for a week in the lead-up to tomorrow night's State of Origin decider and I've been quite impressed by how much impact the game has had in an Aussie rules-mad town. You might have heard that no one turned up at Melbourne airport when the teams arrived and that no one was at the Blues' training session on Sunday, but so what?

Tullamarine is a cut lunch from Melbourne city and it costs a small fortune to park out there so anyone with any sense just waited to catch the players when they arrived at their hotels. It also was raining on Sunday and going to training sessions isn't a big thing in league culture. There were plenty of people at the fan day last week and I can assure you they weren't just there for something to do — they knew who they were coming to see and what it was all about.

So you can forget all the knockers of the Melbourne Origin concept, it really hasn't been a waste of time at all.

I can see why NSW would be about missing out on a home decider, but i would like to point out that there will have been two sold out Origin games this year- one in Brisbane and one in Melbourne. Maybe if the Sydney fans were a little but more willing to get off their backsides, the ARL would've been reluctant to move the decider to Melbourne

Besides, if we are serious about wanting our game to grow, we have to give the Melbourne market a shot. We either promote league in non-traditional areas or we sit back in our "heartlands" and watch as our support base dwindles under an AFL avalanche.

I've never been one to sit back and take a pounding . . . I'd rather go down swinging.

It's a pity the majority of ignorant, self indulgent people in Sydanee don't share big Gordie's view, but then again the rest of Australia have come to expect nothing less from them

I wonder why people who make a living off the game like Phil Gould, Johnny Gibbs, Bob Fulton, Mark Geyer and Ray Hadley didn’t come out in 1994 and say it was a waste of time in promoting Rugby League in Melbourne.
It seems the Melbourne exercise has upset the AFL mates in the Sydney media as well. There is a turd who writes in the Herald called Richard Hinds. He is the Herald’s Sydney AFL journalist. He has become obsessed with writing columns of why Rugby League will fail in Melbourne. Last week I heard the AFL loving Steve Price on 2UE going off about taking an Origin game to Melbourne. He went to the open line and could only find one listener to object to the game being taken to Melbourne. Isn’t amazing the critics who said 12 month ago that no one would turn up, have changed their line to now NSW and QLD fans flying in and dominate the crowd, to the Victorians who turn up will only be there for the event or the free tickets being given away. What will be the spin if it rates OK in Melbourne tomorrow night? Heaven forbids if it wins the timeslot, that will cause a lot of coughing and spluttering. Will the get out jail card be the size of the crowd for the Friday Night game against the Broncos from the “so called” Rugby League fans? I’m sure the narks will find a negative or two,

You're exactly right Green machine, no matter how many positives come out of it you're always going to get the knobs who will find the negatives eg Hadley, Gould, gregstar to name a few. I can just imagine how much that will increase if the Blues get rolled

Anyway the game WILL rate very well down here and i'll gaurantee that. As for comp (free) tickets getting handed out, while i know that's a common practice in the NRL games to boost crowed numbers (I know that as fact as i go up to see the Storm at least 4 times a year in Sydney and have been given them on numerous occasions, i'd go as far to say even more times than i've actually paid for them) i can assure you that hasn't happened here.

I tried to get category 1 tickets a month after they went on sale and couldn't because they were all sold out and i doubt very much they'd be giving away $100 tickets as freebies. As it turned out i ended up getting category 2 which were $65 and even then they were limited when i purchased them.

Anyway the point is the practice of giving away free tickets is solely to fill the stadium as much as possible, but this event was sold out weeks ago and even having to go to the point of releasing standing room tickets just to meet demand. So for any of those sh*theads up there to suggest such a thing just smacks of petulance, jealousy and downright emabarrassment because they couldn't get close to selling out Origin 1 on their home turf the "heartland" of league and that's still after they would've given out a sh*tload of free tickets as they do for pretty much evey game up there

As for the floods of interstaters coming to see the game, the report was around 80% of the tickets were sold in Melbourne so that's just another fact that they can stick in their pipes and shove it right up their asses for all i care.

Our crowds are up when the local AFL teams struggle, that is a fact of life. I guess that puts us in the same boat as the Swans. Our best-ever crowds were when Collingwood were cellar dwellars. Only a matter of time again......

I know a lot of people from Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula that are Melbourne Storm members, my parents included.

Ice,
Greg brought up the point of News Ltd pouring $10m into the Melbourne Storm. That is not correct. Some of that money goes to funding the Cowboys as well. The $10m is insignificant compared to the Leagues Club grants that keep NSW NRL clubs afloat,
