what is this?

argument on the run with misdirection thrown in for smoke-screen?

an average of 15,000 to home games is pitiful? get off the hooch dimwit.

an extra 43,000 people have walked through our home ground gates in only 7 games thus far to watch footy this year. that's pitiful?

explain why souths with only one win have brought over 100,000 to their home games?

Because Souths have been in the comp for almost 100 hundred years in the leagues "heartland" We're in our 9th year and in the middle of AFL territory. Geez gregstar, i picked up that you were a dickhead but the fact that you had to ask that just confirmed it

I love what they represent for rugby league.

WTF ??? a team that is bankrolled, even though they get all of 12 people to a game. Why do all other clubs have to be self sufficient, except the storm. Take away News ltd money and they dont exist. I'd love my club to be bankrolled too.

you idiot.

souths have been a laughing stock since 1990 & haven't threatened a special school XIII in all that time. they are the laughing stock of the league with incompetance of the highest order. their "heartland" has changed demographically over the 100 years to the extent where local support hardly exists. furthermore they compete with 7 other clubs in the sydney area who all play the same sport.

your mob has been highly successful or there abouts for almost a decade - winning a comp & playing in the semis.
& your mob is the only team in melbourne playing a winter sport outside AFL. & yet you still lag. you have no infrastructure in terms of junior base in that city or state. you have no prospect of being able to intitiate said infrastructure and yet you expect news ltd to keep throwing $10M at the organization?

i pegged you as a c*ntsnap from the very first post, but don't worry, my expectations weren't high.

yeah only 12 people go to the games.
i feel sorry for the 12 or 8,000 that turn up or who have taken the storm to heart. but the fact is it isn't enough to warrant a team there. if a highly successful rugby league team can only draw that amount from an entire city, it's a failed experiment.

the peope of the central coast deserve that team

the people of the wide bay region deserve that team

the people of brisbane deserve another team

the people of mackay deserve that team.

the people of melbourne deserve the odd exhibition nrl game & the odd test match.

fair enough gregstar...i can see your point mate.

I dont think the nrl has done enough for the storm untill this year...that on top of some other things have led to our crowds being sucky. back in 98-99 we got 20,000 on a couple of occasions and altho im not sure of the average they were pretty damn good size crowds...but then they went away, why? i dont have a clue! i wish i knew....

i hope that the new ground and the SOO plus the storm high up on the table will hopefully bring more people to the game and more people will pass on with word of mouth etc.

melbourne is an utter failure. the day news ltd decides to stop throwing $10m away for no apparent gain, is the day the storm ceases to exist.

I have a couple of questions.

Where did you pull $10m out of?

What makes you think the money News Ltd has been putting into the Storm does not get them a return?

Oh, and as for comparing crowd averages between Sydney teams and Melbourne Storm you would need to take into account the away teams' supporters to get a true comparison.

For Sydney teams take the home crowd subtract the away teams' supporters and add back 100 (I doubt Melbourne gets more than 100 away teams' supporters at home games). I am sure if this could be done accurately then Melbourne Storm's home crowd average would be comparable or better than most Sydney based sides.

Name two NRL teams that aren't bankrolled.

NRL clubs as stand alone entities in general don't make a profit. In 2005 all bar one made a profit. The other 14 teams needed external funding/grants/sponsorships to stay afloat.

it would seem to me as an outsider looking in, that the melbourne media draw the curtains whenever afl is threatened. why - i don't know.

it is hardly the case or expectation that league will ever outrate or surpass AFL. but the paranoia is amazing. the swans & lions were generously treated by both the written & visual media even when they both were going like busted hemorroids. in fact AFL in general received plenty of coverage which has increased over the years since '82 & '87 respectively.

but the same cannot be said of melbourne in its regard for league. you are lucky to know the sport exists if you live there & you'd stand a better chance of finding coverage or results on the moon if you travel down there.

TV ads in prime time, SOO3 a sell out (which according to reports nearly 80% are locals), 12 page SOO liftout in Thursday's Herald Sun.

I'm an eels fan and I don't hate Melbourne I like watching the storm play ... and I don't hate their supporters either ... and their players are so down to earth I've never met a storm player who was arrogant! and I don't hate Crocker and Kidwell like most people ... I go to a few away games if I can. I know Mebourne fans hate Fitzgerald but hey half of the Eels supporters hate him.

simple answer - all teams draw good crowds when playing the storm at home. why is this not reciprocated?

that's tremendous - but why for an origin? why can't the storm get at least something along these lines? the sydney / brisbane media give AFL a tremendous amount of exposure. tell me - where are those 80% when the storm are playing as successfully as they are?
