it would seem to me as an outsider looking in, that the melbourne media draw the curtains whenever afl is threatened. why - i don't know.

it is hardly the case or expectation that league will ever outrate or surpass AFL. but the paranoia is amazing. the swans & lions were generously treated by both the written & visual media even when they both were going like busted hemorroids. in fact AFL in general received plenty of coverage which has increased over the years since '82 & '87 respectively.

but the same cannot be said of melbourne in its regard for league. you are lucky to know the sport exists if you live there & you'd stand a better chance of finding coverage or results on the moon if you travel down there.

This coming a from Sydney Supporter who has need never ever been in Melbourne.

Your theory is the same as the pigs flying thru the sky.

I definately don't hate the Storm.. they have my most favourite player on their books.

But seriously I have never met a Storm fan who is nasty and vindictive and they are genuinely happy to have League in VIC amoungst all the AFL.

There is definately a place in the NRL for a Melb team as there is a place in the AFL for Sydney.

I hope they do really well this year... as my boys are not going anywhere in a hurry

Hmm, Rugby League rates well on pay tv. How many Victorians have pay tv to watch NRL? I am sure it's more than you think. That makes money for News Ltd because they half own Fox Sports. Also some of the "money" they put into Storm is not in the form of cash but contra, ie advertising in the Herald Sun.

Some great crowds there in Rugby League heartland. Actually that proves my point that if you take the away supporters out of the equation the Storm's crowds aren't as bad as most ignorant people try to make out.

NB: I skipped the Panthers "home" game against Storm as that was played in Adelaide.

really - "where did you get your information or are you just guessing?" source the pay tv league ratings in melbourne please;-)
tell me what the pay tv subscription rate is in the whole country - i'll bet you're suprised with how few households have it. in short - the storm are f*cked if they're counting on pay tv to gain support.

wtf?! crowd figures for the storm are sh*thouse - it's that simple. explain why you've only exceeded 12,000 at olympic twice since '02

Mate, its simple. They have 10,000 or so very loyal supporters but what they lack is the away supporters travelling to see their team play against the storm. Same is true when Storm play in sydney. Their supporters can't travel to sydney for every game.

then it's pretty obvious - the experiment has failed. 10,000 supporters for a team as successful as that is sh*thouse.

i would like someone to show me why melbourne deserves a team as strong as that, over the likes of the central coast, wide bay, brisbane (again) or even mackay.

if these regions only averaged 10,000 suporters to a game - i'm not here.

it's a scandal.

i feel sorry for the 12 or 8,000 that turn up or who have taken the storm to heart. but the fact is it isn't enough to warrant a team there. if a highly successful rugby league team can only draw that amount from an entire city, it's a failed experiment.

the peope of the central coast deserve that team

the people of the wide bay region deserve that team

the people of brisbane deserve another team

the people of mackay deserve that team.

the people of melbourne deserve the odd exhibition nrl game & the odd test match.

Get the f**k over it knob. We're here to stay and no matter how much whingeing you come out or how many deluded ramblings you come out with nothing will change that. End of story sh*t for brains

incorrect - you're only here until rupert decides losing money hand over fist on such a dud market aint worth it.

good to see you providing answers to the questions raised btw.

i'll ask them of you again.

how many schools play league in melbourne?
how many rugby league clubs are there in victoria?
why have the crowds deteriorated every year since 2000 despite the team's continued strength?
would that team draw bigger crowds & more support if located in wide bay, central coast, mackay or brisbane?

Year 11/12 Storm Challenge:

14 teams came together to play a modified version of Rugby League, being 7 players on the field at one time in 15 minute games. We saw some fantastic games of Rugby League, and the skill level of all students were of a great level.

Teams travelled from as far as Bendigo (Bendigo Snr College who provided 2 teams on the day), and Worawa Aboriginal College travelled from Healesville, and some local schools such as Cranbourne SC, Roxburgh College, St Bernard's College, Parade College, and Rosebud SC. Special mention must also go to the Mill Park students who also provided 2 teams on the day.

Roxburgh came up against Monterey, who managed to progress into the final defeating Roxburgh 18-16. In the other semi final, South Oakleigh defeated a very strong Bayside team 16-8. Both of the Semi finals were nail-biting affairs, and all the players really played out of their skins. This then pitted Monterey up against South Oakleigh in the final, and the players put on a fantastic game very fitting of a final. Possesion changed many times in a very tense game, with South Oakleigh running out winners in the end 16-8.

During the course of the day, we also had a 3-2-1 point system to determine the player of the tournament. The players who polled extremely well included Daryl (Worawa Aboriginal College), Johnson Reeves (Bayside SC), Ben Tupai (Mill Park SC), Nick Galley (St Bernard's College), Matt Komiti (Roxburgh College), David Harris (Parade College), Steve Haltin (Rosebud SC), and Mitchell Smith and Robbie (South Oakleigh). Congratulations must go to Harry Crowe (Rosebud SC) who won the title of Player of the Tournament and will win a football signed by the Melbourne Storm.

there was also an ARL clinic that visited just a few days ago for holiday clinics....

the following article also has some info on the coaching development down there:

http://sportsaustralia.com/articles/apr06/artid5528.html

thats just a little about the development down there....i know there was an article a few months back that went into alot of detail on the new clinics and the fact that there have been more development officers deployed in victoria.

also this word document has lists of schools and other comps that are happening over the 2006 season

Dont see too many Cowboy,Canberra or Warriors supporters travelling.

Anyway the Eels(regardless of their position) in the heart of rugby league territory have been getting crowds of 11,-13,000 this year.
Check the crowds at some of the other Sydney clubs in our league heartland,we have nothing to brag about. At the Sharks who I support we got just over 9,000 against the Cowboys.
Melbourne has more growth potential, than any Sydney club, simply because its virgin territory and its the 2nd biggest city in Oz,and only this year has rugby league been pushed ,in the schools, and in the SOO marketing.
The present stadium at olympic Park is 3rd world icebox looking at it.

Mate better check in our own backyards,Sydney crowds in general are going backwards in rugby league heartlands, with far better stadiums than the hole the Storm have.On occasions far less than the storm.
The storm have sponsors ATM the equal of the best 4 AFL clubs in Melbourne ,and matching some of the best in the NRL.
They are getting the game into the schools, they are now having school comps>the SOO got 14 pages in the herald sun last thursday.

The bloody Vic govt is contributing money to develop the game of rugby league(now an officially recognised sport in schools). They have a rugby league academy school( I think its called Athelstone ???High),that played in the Arrive alive cup.

Melbourne the 2nd biggest city with a population over 4 million and all the sponsorship moneys and a new $100m stadium, and development just now being pushed, the potential? compared to Wide bay,Central Coast and Mackay. Its a no brainer, you go where the population is ,where the sponsorship money is.Many of the sydney clubs would not survive without sponsorship money. You could get 10,000 at tamworth, does that mean you should have an NRL team there ?-its all about exposure including TV).
That is not to say I believe the Central Coast(Bears) still should have a side plus either Perth or Christchurch to make an 18 team comp in the future.
The licence for the storm is at last to the end of 2011,so they are here to stay.

So...is the thread title sarcastic or what??? bellamy is a winging complaining moron...slater is a little punk who tries to get away with everything in the play the ball he can...it's only catching up to him now. Crocker, Kidwell and Walker...does anyone not hate these three fools???? add in the grapple tackles from Smith and co. and the ludacris fact they even have a team in the comp, when you look at what happened to North's...it's criminal....

Yeah, who could possibly find a reason not to like them???

Do you still have trouble sleeping at night re 1999?? That would have been a try regardless, you toss. And Craig Smith would've kicked it from the touchline, he didn't miss one from the sidelines during the finals. Ainscough just gave us an easier kick for the leading points scorer for the 1999 season. People just dislike us because we're successfull and every player (and coach for that matter) you named you would kill to have in your team. Smacks of jealosy to me........

Least Bellamy doesn't slap his players across the face.
