Firstly, I said if Manly were to go under…. if. Losing a club from the NRL is not my preferred option.

Secondly, you have kind of proven the point I’m about to make. AFL, Football and RU can thrive without a top flight presence on the north-shore. How? Intelligent investment and grass-roots community engagement. Manly, a struggling NRL club with a stadium quickly approaching its use-by-date aren’t able to turn the tide so simply having NRL clubs on the north-side of Sydney is not the answer.

Years ago, the ARU went professional and they pumped all their money into the top players in the game
They starved the grassroots of investment. Ever since they did that Union in Australia has become an almost ran. A nothing sport who nobody cares about. The fact that game hasn't died is a testament to two things. 1. AFL hasn't quite gotten round to buying all the sports fields in Sydney yet and 2. the NRL are almost as inept as the ARU

At the moment we have the biggest TV revenue we have ever known. So what are we doing with that money? Pumping it into grassroots, ensuring Rugby League fields are open across Sydney and all the kiddies are playing?

Or are we throwing large amounts of money at the elite players and paying lawyers to do the jobs accountants, planning development officers, marketing managers etc should be doing?

I'll give you a hint - we're not doing the one we should be doing

Right across Sydney AFL are paying councils to take down Rugby League posts and put up AFL ones.
They're putting money years after year after year into junior programs. Their journalists and friends in government keep telling the mums "don't let your son play that rough Rugby game, come play safe, inclusive Oz Kick

In the meantime Rugby League is infighting, bickering and bitching amongst ourselves while our own supporters keep saying the only way to go is to kill Rugby League clubs to make room for more AFL

Killing off Manly does nothing but promote other sports. Peninsula people will only follow a local team
Improve Brookvale (money from the local Council and State Government should be doing that) and then pump NRL money into the local juniors

We will reap the benefits

Union is moderately successful north of the harbour.

I believe the Waratahs are considering some of their games at Brookvale whilst the SFS is rebuilt because the SCG couldn’t cope with the demand of the Swans, Roosters and Waratahs full time? I think I saw that on Facebook?

Brookvale will never get the upgrades it needs and Manly look more likely to kill themselves off than be killed off.
And whether they do or not is pretty much irrelevant to grassroots support. You said it yourself, the AFL are investing in grassroots and reaping rewards in Northern Sydney and yet they don't have a team in Manly.

Anyway, I don't think they should be killed off or pushed.
BUT
They should have a back-up plan now for if Brookvale becomes untenable.
And the NRL should have a back-up plan for if Manly becomes untenable, one that doesn't involve propping them up or reviving the Bears. Any new Northern club has to have buy-in from the Beaches, the Shore, and the Central Coast, and any involvement from either Manly or Norths is an obstacle to this.

For what it's worth, this applies to any Sydney team or even any team.
If the Roosters somehow went under, the NRL should have a backup plan there too.

The Waratahs are a NSW state representative team. Just like are all SR teams

Super Rugby is top-flight RU in Australia. The other teams you mention are amatuer teams and whilst popular are certainly not at the top level of their sport in the country.

Such positivity and all for the demise of rugby league.Great thinking! Other codes will be delighted!

They are not thoughts or opinions they are reality and facts.

Central Coast is not in North Sydney - fact
Brooky is not getting renovated according to the local council and the NSW Government

I agree with everything you said - but the fact is that the other codes are apparently erroding our game with no professional teams in North Sydney whilst we have one. So Manly clearly isn't the answer, or at least the only answer. Only an NRL led initiative will turn the tables.

The Waratahs and the Swans represent the North Shore. They are overarching super identities, which they can be because Super Rugby and the AFL have never been suburban competitions in Sydney. The NRL doesn't have that luxury. No NRL club represents the North Shore. Quite literally the only dead zone in the entire city. A dead zone that is reinforced by the fact that one of the best supported clubs of the 1990s was booted out of the area in the 1990s.

Shouldn't be too hard to understand.

Here's what should happen if they don't want the game not to die as it currently is.

Need to throw a hell of a lot of money at grass roots and going into school's, getting kids into games cheaply etc

Teams need a major shakeup and more states included for a wider viewing audience.
Things as they are now are not sustainable, kids just don't watch the game like they did when I was growing up.

The teams should be something close to this in reality.

Brisbane
North Brisbane
Gold Coast
North Queensland
Newcastle
Sydney
Western Sydney
Wollongong
Canberra
Melbourne
Adelaide
Perth
Darwin
Auckland
Christchurch
PNG

So your solution (to something that is not even a problem) is to kill all the traditional, long serving, stand-alone clubs and replace them with one-city teams making the competition even more static and boring?

No thanks.

The Bears are dead, leave em dead.

Manly needs to stay where I can hate them.

With Trent Barrett coach for 20 years.

Arko and Quayle should have traded the Sharks for a washing machine when they had the chance.

Manly, Wests and Parra should have taken over Bears territory 15 years ago.
The only booted club to retain a junior league? Heard rumours over the years of obstructive behaviour from Bears officials in the region - time they were put in their place.
Divide up their junior league and Manly to play a trial at NSO.

So you're proposing the NRL build a bridge from Palm Beach to Umina?

The Cliff Lyons Bridge. Make it so.

It's not even that far. China would have done it.

Alas, the fine folk of Palm Beach wouldn't want filthy coasties being able to access the area without at least the inconvenience of a ferry trip, which at least hold the possibility of having passengers passport checked and income-tested in the future.
