See, I much prefer 150 Lashes to Coopers Pale. I like Coopers but for me its the base level pale

Same here. I find the Coopers has more of a bitter finish out of the bottle. I havnt had it on tap for a good long time but I remember it being less harsh
Stone and Wood Pacific Ale is a better beer than the Little Creatures equivalent.

There I said it. The beer drinking market in Australia has been somewhat obsessed by Pale Ale in recent years, and it's fair to say that LC has been foremost in that. But with the recent topping of the Top 100 Craft beers, S&W has thrown itself into the fray. It's a bloody good beer. I'm not sure if it's worthy of topping any list of a hundred beers, but good nonetheless. LC has been unworthy in holding it's reign as a favourite Pale in this country, so it's good to see a nicer beer may take that crown.

The thing I like most about it is the consistency of character it maintains. It just never lets you down. From the potent aromas of passionfruit right through to the bitey, hoppy end, the flavours are strong throughout.

Now Pale is not my favourite type of brew, but I did enjoy drinking this one. I'll be out buying a sixpack at some point. I believe they retail for about $18.00 bucks which I'd say is a fair market price. Let's hope the brewers manage to keep it in store.

SW Pacific is a different style of Pale from what I can gather, lighter in flavour than LC imo. I guess its all down to what you prefer really but I find the stronger flavour punch of the LC more enticing. I do prefer the sharper flavours of IPAs so it probably explains why my preferences fall that way

So I've taken the plunge. After years of dilly-dallying, inspiration from the LU 'Beer Thread' finally got me to start brewing my own beer.

A lot of research has gone into this, but there is only so much talking to the guy at the home brew store and googling one can do. You've just got to get in there and start brewing. The missus and I have finally got digs of our own and the space to do what we want. There's much happening in the DQ household right now, chicken coops, vegie gardens and now our very own brewery.

I went for the Cooper's kit, mainly because of their new fermenter which is very easy to clean and comes with 30 PET bottles for the first bottling. Experienced brewers make their own fermenters, but without that knowledge I thought this would be a safe option. The nearby home brew shop has a lot of gear to augment the kit and when I wish to buy more exotic brews, the bloke their can help.

So today the first batch was set in motion, here's hoping it will be a success.

Who else is brewing? Would love to hear from anyone who's had some experiences that may be of interest. There's a great community of brewers on this forum:

Always something I've wanted to try, but it seems like a lot of research and hard work, pretty much the opposite of what I hope to achieve with beer

Look, it's just time for me to start doing this. Five years ago it would never have happened, I was too busy living on the road, traveling overseas, partying and drinking a shedload of different beers.

But settling down with a family it only seems right that I might put those experiences to good use in making a beer of my own. One that i might like and one that my friends who are in a similar position may enjoy. The missus, bless her cotton socks, doesn't mind trying different brews either, so it's something we can do together. I'll even try and make some of her favourites.

The hobby of it is half the attraction.

Had the Little Creatures Pale Ale. First sip I thought it was a very nice flavour, but too strong and citrusy. But after drinking it for a bit, I got use it quickly and loved it.

I'll have to have a few more of them to see if it can top Coopers Pale Ale, though.

Since it's varying between raining and pissing down here on the Gold Coast, I'm doing the only reasonable thing I can think of. Went to Dan's + 1st Choice and got about 10-12 different beers and now I'm going to try them all. Got a few that seem to have got rave reviews on here (Sam Adams, Seirra Nervada, etc) plus some I either hadn't seen or haven't tried. So here we go, starting with Sam Adams.

Nothing new tonight for me.

I'm going straight for the Pacific Ale sixpack. One just wasn't enough the other night.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale = Smooth, refreshing, and something I can't quite put my finger on...

Really though, this could be a very dangerous beer. Waaaaay too easy to drink at 5.6% ABV.

Yeah I've heard good things. It's the beer that was responsible for the craze for Pales in the 'craft beer' world. Will try at some point.

BTW Sounds like you're having a bloody good arvo.

Just had a pint of Stokes Smokey Ale (Boutique NZ brewer), it tastes like Laproaig in beer form...a bit of alright

Montieths Sparkling Ale - Crap

I have heard the bottles are crap, and thus been reluctant to try it. I did enjoy it greatly on tap though, but the difference can be massive.

Bridge Road Brewers Bling IPA...awesome beer I reckon, just bitter and tangy enough for me, and loads of hops and malt

Okay, back after the movies (Tinker Taylor Toy Soldier + 200mL of Jack Daniel's) and onto Malt Shovel Brewery's Abbey Ale. And Damn can Dr Chuck Hahn make a drink! For a 7% ABV drink, it is fantastic. I have to assume it's based on the Trappist Dubbel beers, and for a darker beer it is wonderful.
