Yes you still get off doing missionary, not so for VB.

VB is only one rung above Carlton Draught.

CUB is more of a chemical manufacturer than a brewer.

Tried the fat yak over the weekend.

Meh..

Over the pale ales I think.

Will try pilsners next, have enjoyed the Squire Pilsner in the past, there has been a few suggestions in this thread I will have a go at. Uni is about to restart so the weekends spent drinking far too much are about to come to an end for a while so pilsners, which I find I can't drink many of, should fit right in with that.

James Squire 150 Lashes pale ale is the beer I've been drinking for a couple of weeks now. Awesome stuff.

I really don't get all the love for the 150 Lashes. It tastes like they wanted to be a Coopers Pale Ale knock-off, but easier drinking. Just comes across as an above-average lager.

Malt Shovel has taken a dramatic turn with their newly marketed 'off-beat names', which has coincided with the release of that pretty average Pale Ale.

As SGL said, I wouldn't even be sure it's a true ale, the term 'Pale Ale' is getting thrown around a lot these days.

I'm worried about the direction they're heading. It seems Chuck Hahn may be spending too much time up in the mountains making Kosciusko beers and letting the gurus look after his real baby.

Going to Dan Murphy's tomorrow looking for some good new beers to drink. Only 18, so haven't had heaps of different beers, mainly the mainstream ones like Carlton, XXXX, Tooheys etc. The only lesser mainstream beers I've had are Coopers Pale Ale, Coopers Sparkling, James Squire Golden Ale and a few others of theirs.

I'll probably buy 10 or so different beers, so just getting them singularly, not a carton lol.

Any recommendations?

Start with Toohey's Old, a classic in the true sense. Pour it into a glass to savour the aromas.

Otherwise just try a mix of Australian and International beers is all I can say. A German, Polish or Belgian brew is always going to deliver.

I love Old, too.

I normally hit the bourban and coke whenever I go out drinking, but if I'm having a few beers at home or just a couple of quiet ones at the bar then I'll go with either 150 lashes, XXXX or Old. I can't stand VB.

Any recommendations?

- Endeavour Pale Ale
- Vale Ale
- Red Angus Pilsener
- Little Creatures Pale Ale
- James Squire Amber Ale
- My Wife's Bitter
- Chimay
- Duvel
- Alpha Pale Ale
- Knappstein Reserve Lager

That should get you started.

I think the darker beers, anything from Amber to darker, are far better off tap that from a bottle. Old off tap is delcious

Coopers Pale is still my favourite standard beer.

People who like VB actually hate beer, because it isn't really a beer in the true sense. So I find the argument that loving real beer as 'pompous' quite laughable.

Start a VB thread if you want and you'll have the time of your life I'm sure.

Thanks guys. Didn't quite get 10 lol, was in a bit of a hurry, but still bought a few different ones.

I'm looking forward to drinking the Little Creatures Pale Ale. I've heard it's nice.

Oh and Tooheys Old is good stuff. I've only had it in a schooner though.

VB tastes like goats piss

Well done mate

There is nothing wrong with steering away from the mainstream beers and trying some new stuff. There are some cracking lesser known brews out there

Stone and Wood Pacific Ale is a better beer than the Little Creatures equivalent.

There I said it. The beer drinking market in Australia has been somewhat obsessed by Pale Ale in recent years, and it's fair to say that LC has been foremost in that. But with the recent topping of the Top 100 Craft beers, S&W has thrown itself into the fray. It's a bloody good beer. I'm not sure if it's worthy of topping any list of a hundred beers, but good nonetheless. LC has been unworthy in holding it's reign as a favourite Pale in this country, so it's good to see a nicer beer may take that crown.

The thing I like most about it is the consistency of character it maintains. It just never lets you down. From the potent aromas of passionfruit right through to the bitey, hoppy end, the flavours are strong throughout.

Now Pale is not my favourite type of brew, but I did enjoy drinking this one. I'll be out buying a sixpack at some point. I believe they retail for about $18.00 bucks which I'd say is a fair market price. Let's hope the brewers manage to keep it in store.
