It's like they've combined two of my favourite things

Bridgeport Kingpin double red ale. Been a VERY long time since Ive had a good red beer (Prague in 2003, cant remember the name). This one is tops. High in alcohol at 7.5% abv, but it doesnt overpower the flavour. Awesome!

Now winter has finished, and with the fact I was too tight to buy a heating element, it has now become time to start brewing again.

A Scottish Style Heavy Ale is the beer of choice to go into the fermenter. Curious choice it may be, seeing as we are coming into some warmer weather. But I originally purchased the kit for drinking during the colder months. Nevertheless I couldn't resist giving it a try anyhow.

The star features of this brew was the addition of a chocolate grain, which had scents more of the coffee variety, and Goldings Hops, which are a traditional English variety. I'm hoping to get a sweet flavour and and a reasonably low carbonation.

Brewing the Scottish style requires the addition of less water for a more dense mouthfeel, and makes only seventeen litres in total.

Can't wait to try it, here's hoping for success.

Amager Bryghus "Rated XXX" Imperial IPA. Wow, just wow. Trappist beer enthusiasts will love this, reminds me of a real top quality Trippel. Desert Qlder I reckon you'll love this.

Now this one is a very unusual drink. Red Duck "Limited Release" Ra #2. Bitter but no hops at all, made using a process to sourdough bread, and has some different fruits chucked in for extra flavour. Something a beer drinker with more interest in the brewing process would appreciate more than I do, but it is good. But be careful, at 11.3% abv you're in for a hell of a kick!

I've wanted to try more Trappist Beers, but access to a decent range has been the problem.

For a while now I've contemplated joining beer clubs and the like, but I don't see value for money.

I've been concentrating on trying some of Victoria's wide range of 'microbrews'. Victoria may be the arse end of the world, but they do have a fabulous brewing culture down here.

Recently become fond of the Grand Ridge range. They seem to find a terrific balance between malt and hops in their brews. Though like alot of micros, they have a very wide range. To me it would seem more wise to concentrate on a couple of styles rather than try to and brew every style under the sun. What I like about this brewery is they show up to various country markets around Victoria, and are happy to talk brewing. You can learn a lot this way by speaking direct with the brewers rather than the retailers.

Nevertheless, their 'Yarra Valley Gold' is a particular favourite, it certainly combines a sweet maltiness and a sharp hoppy bite. It also has the quality that I like in a beer in that it has a good nose, mouthfeel, taste and aftertaste. I'm always fond of beers that are strong all the way through the quaffing process.

Didn't drink a beer for about two months as well.

Was on the single malts which I hadn't indulged in since living in Scotland.

A whiskey thread is definitely needed round here I reckon.

Back on the brews now though.

Ok, I can now concede that Wheat Beers are starting to warm to me. Having a Weihenstephaner Vitus. VERY big banana aroma, easy drinking + refreshing. Got the shock of my life to find out that it was 7.7% abv, because it really isn't noticeable.

Got transferred to a different store at work a few weeks ago, and the guy who runs the store is a beer nut. So this thread might get a workout from now on.

Bridgeport from Oregon USA. Some big flavoured beers here. Kingpin Double Red Ale is my favourite, but the Hop Czar Imperial IPA is a cracker too. Their regular IPA is a good session beer too.

Having a quiet 'schoolies' at Port Douglas. Great spot, great mates, hot wimminz.

Anyway, tips can't hurt. Good lightish beer we can drink a fair bit of through the day/night, and something a bit heavier (not necessarily beer, probably heading more the rum/vodka route) for partying. All cheapish too of course :p Looking at the likes of Bazal here.

SGL or Baz would remember a drink called Star Ice. Didgi's predicament got me thinking of it. $20 for a carton of full strength piss, and this was only 5 years ago
