In these incidents it is always interesting to watch media outlets come at it from different angles.
The Telegraph article labels it as an alcohol fueled incident without ever claiming Marshall to be drunk but those reading headlines could easily garner that impression.
The Herald on the other hand uses his mothers words to establish a small amount of feeling sorry for a guy who people always have to have a go at.
It is interesting
It is interesting, but pretty typical of how the SMH and the Tele split down predictable lines on every major issue in the game.
Benji is a good example. He is obviously close with Glenn Jackson and a couple of other Fairfax journos, which seems to result in the SMH getting all of the good Benji (and Tigers) scoops. Presumably this pisses the Tele guys off, because they always seem to be looking for a reason to have a crack at him.
The same thing plays out on heaps of levels - coverage of the IC, the Storm, Parramatta backroom dealings, Sonny Bill. They take sides and report what they think will maintain the best relationship with their key sources, or what makes sense from a broader commercial (ie News v Fairfax) point of view.
Must be pretty depressing for the good journos, having to toe the company line on almost everything.
