Bennett Cut Loose By Broncos

We need a new coach with new fresh ideas.

I am a fervent believer of this. I think we all have seen the best McGregor has to offer. He is consistent in being able to get use finish far from the bottom of the table but also far from grand final action. He is constant in finding excuses for why we couldn't cut it each year.

I've not heard him once admit to a mistake on his own behalf, and more often than not doesn't have the goolies to axe substandard players and blood new ones in a timely fashion. More than that, as much he is loved by the playing group he doesn't attract quality at a cheap price. I have no idea what's happening behind the scenes but it seems there has just been a whole lot of hope put in Mary, and unfortunately, no long term plan or going hard for a coach with a bit of a hard nose and calculated approach to coaching and managing a first grade team. With Doust finally gone this may change...

There's no expectation at the Dragons of real success a la a Gus Gould, who love him or hate, criticise or laud him, is going all out to get a trophy. In a worst case he has an exciting footy team who never give in, with an ace halfback who we all know will be joined by his dad very soon.

There are a lot of better options than McGregor.

Well all I can say is that rumours swirling around up here in Brisbane is that Bennett is look for another gig has head coach from 2020 and prefers a 3 year deal. Most are saying it will be South Sydney as their coach is favourite to go to the Broncos. Others are saying JD will be the Broncos coach and Bennett will come to the Dragons.

It is now up to our new CEO to address the coaching problem by:

  1. Signing Bennett for 2020 to the end of 2022.
  2. Hiring Bennett's preferred assistant to be Mary's assistant in 2019.
  3. Letting go Hornby and Young - unless of course Bennett wants one or both of them to stay on.
If the above happens, Mary will be in the position of having to deliver a top 4 spot in 2019 in order to obtain a Super League coaching position. I doubt that any NRL club will hire him as their first grade head coach.

What the?
He won one premiership in 3.
We won 2 minor premierships.
We won the world club title
Year 3 we went down by 1 point in week 2 of the finals.

Yeahhhh, we can get anyone to match that
Not

What's he done since? Squat. Got the Broncos to a final once in the 8 years since his last and lost.

And what does a MP mean? Absolutely nothing if you don't follow through. Just ask the Roosters. And a world cup title? Who gives a shit?

Went down by 1 point? We went down by 1 point this year as well but hell, lets bag Mary because can't coach for those pressure situations but praise Bennett for just missing out by a point? 1 or 50 points, it's still a loss.

As much as I hate the Broncos, they know when to move on. They can see that he's not the same coach he was and looking to get some fresh blood in that can take the team forward. Meanwhile Dragons supporters like you are creaming their pants over another teams discards.

He also admitted that Brownie had done the hard work, that he just had to add the icing on the cake.

And with the crap being posted on here, those 2 years of failure would be shouted down in an instant - there would be calls for his head to roll because he went out in straight sets both years. You guys place him on a pedestal that, with his form in the last 7-8 years he doesn't deserve. Up until 2010 yes, but after that it's been a steady slide.

And if it's true he's looking for a 3 year gig, you're just repeating the same cycle - and that's in the event he can turn around his current form.

As I said, I think there are better options out there. We need to look to the future and not short term gratification again.

WOW!

Brown had a top grade squad of players to work with. The Club kept him on until finally they lost patience and hired Bennett. Yes it is true that Bennett came in with a good squad in place but still had to improve the roster and change the whole style of play.

Bennett has been building up the Broncos squad since his arrival and will leave it in good stead come the end of 2019.

I believe if he comes in 2020, he will inherit a good roster as I'm sure he will have a lot of input into the make up of the squad during 2019.

Wow alright!!

As per usual, not looking at the bigger picture. Looking to repeat history and living in the past.

You and others go on about turning the Dragons into a super club again, but you are happy with an ageing coach to come in for 3 years? Looking for short term gratification and setting yourselves up for yet more long term pain.

Building up the Broncos since his arrival? What for? An unceremonious exit from this years finals by non other than Mary himself?

Seriously, you guys pick and choose what to criticise and to praise based purely on your agenda. And as per usual, choosing not to actually comment on any of the facts I've put in my post. Take off the rose coloured glasses.

Bennett would have won plenty more in the last 7 years if he stayed with us

Wait, who are we talking about? Wayne Bennett? That Wayne Bennett? The one who was here for three years, got us two minor premierships and the only premiership we've won in (pause to let this sink in) thirty nine years. Legend of 2010 Wayne Bennett? Hero of St George Wayne Bennett?

Yes, he built on the team that Brownie had coached. That team didn't win a premiership. No team that Brownie has coached has looked like winning a premiership, here or anywhere else. It's true, he hasn't won anything at Brisbane in his second stint but while he's been there his side has been more competitive than ours every year except for this one.

There can be sensible conversations about whether he's the right choice to replace McGregor. But he's on a pedestal at this club because he earned it.

The man is a legend and is welcome back at the Dragons any time he wishes

And if you actually read my posts, I said up to 2010 he deserves the praise. But, in my opinion, to suggest he is the man to take the club from 2020 into the future is flawed thinking. I'm not saying he is a failure as a coach or has never been a good coach. I'm saying he is not the solution for us moving forward based solely on the fact he won us a premiership in 2010.

And as I've said in almost every post, to me, the minor premiership means absolutely nothing if you don't follow it up with a premiership. Seriously, if Melbourne wins on the weekend, do you think the Roosters go around saying "we don't care, we won the Minor Premiership"? Nobody remembers the Minor Premiers - they only remember the Premiers.

When teams start the year, every year, their goal is to win the Premiership. It's not to appear in the Finals, it's not win the Minor Premiership, it's not to win a world cup - hell it's not even to appear in the grand final. It's to win it. So to me, sprouting out that he won us 2 minor premierships and a world cup have no bearing on the argument.

Let me ask you this - why do you think Broncos are moving him on? Surely if he was that valuable, they'd be keeping him on?

I'm full of admiration and respect for Wayne Bennett as a past Dragons premiership winning coach, however you can't go back in order to go forward! I just cannot see him coming to the Dragons in 2019 or 2020 as a Head Coach at the age of 70.
His knowledge and expertise would be more suitable to a club in the capacity of a Coaching Director or advisor.
Whilst Mary is still popular with our players, I still believe he's borderline average at best and 2019 should be his last.
I'd be looking at the Storm assistant coach Adam O'Brien as the next gen coach from the production line, maybe under Wayne Bennett as Director with a good broom thru the place. That's my personal opinion.

We Dragons fans argue over most things . But the one thing 99% of us agree on is that Mary is just not up to being a NRL level coach and is at best mediocre .
If we have a choice between a slightly past " It " Bennett and a never had "It " McGregor for the next 3 years ….Bennett wins hands down .
