I don't see how Bennett talking the GC into signing Roberts demonstrates that Bennett thinks he's a quality player. It could simply be because Bennett likes Tyrone and wants him to have a club. Plus the Titans are desperate for a halfback, so all Bennett would have to say to them is that the knights will probably pay for over half his contract along with the fact your club has no one better at this point in time. The quote from Bennett in 2014 saying that each week he considered dropping him carries more weight for mine.

I definitely hadn't heard anything about it and I find it hard to believe that Bennett wouldn't have the last say when it came to hiring and firing players. I remember when he came here, it was said that the buck stops with Bennett and that Tinkler would take a back seat when it came to the hiring and firing of the playing staff.

To be honest, something did stink about the way Bennett protected Gidley during his tenure. Whether it was the club or his own convictions keeping him from moving Gidley on, I'm not sure... but something must have been. Bennett was very vocal about Buderus' return in that he couldn't work out why the Knights ever moved such a club legend on. In that case, Wayne was rewarded because Buderus is a legitimate champion player. Gidley never returned Waynes faith in him, at least not on the field.

It was either his own pride or the club stopping him, but something definitely held him back from pulling the trigger on Gids for mine. There isn't an explanation I can think of that would surprise me much.

I suspect Wayne was promised the world (and full control over it) when he signed on with us... but I also think that we let him down on multiple fronts... and forcing his hand with the roster could easily be one way we could have done that. It had crossed my mind more than once while he was here.

I'm not sure why people swallow this 'Tinkler backseat' so easily though? The dude is an egotistical dickhead, the Knights and Jets were his playthings. Trying to win a premiership ASAP has Tinkler all over it rather than Bennett. Kind of beside the point, though, because if what 1qaz is saying has some truth to it, I doubt the pressure to keep Captain Kurt would have been from him anyway. That would have the boys club written all over it.

We could be the most professional club In the comp, we would still not be able to offer players the same $$ that your mob can.

Our squad would look very different if we didn't have other clubs skimming the cream from our area (and outbidding us on free agents, and paying less "on the books" for players) because we can't compete financially. The rest is a strawman.

It's an uneven playing field, but you have a vested interest in it staying that way so I don't expect you to acknowledge the effect it has.
