The best cover I've heard was of La Grange.

It was erformed at the pub by a band called Black Label; Rock & Roll. The most intense solos you've ever heard.

There are some free downloads there if you are interested.

"Oh Sister/Knocking on Heaven's door" (Bob Dylan) covered by Cat Power. Just beautiful.

Worst
"Imagine" (John Lennon) by A perfect circle. Hideous, just hideous.

I honestly thought i was the only Cat Power fan in the country. Good to see im not alone ... Werewolf owns them all though :)

*Sunday Bloody Sunday- U2

Sorry Les, that one made me do a bit of research and Sunday Bloody Sunday is NOT a cover.

Onto the topic of the thread though:
Metallica - So What?
The Whitlams - Tangled Up In Blue (by the way, the fact so many Dylan songs make the list of best covers kind of shows how talented of a songwriter he is)
Ozzy Osbourne - Stayin' Alive
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Faith No More - Easy & War Pigs
Pantera - The Badge (check the soundtrack to 'The Crow')
The Tea Party - Paint It Black
Rage Against The Machine - The Ghost Of Tom Joad
The Prodigy - Fuel My Fire
Neil Finn - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out & Billy Jean

Worst:
The Herd - I Was Only 19 (I agree with you Roosterbooster1, it's terrible)
Madonna - American Pie
Britney Spears - I Love Rock'n'Roll

Jealous Guy was written by Lennon, and covered by Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music.

Mike Nesmith wrote "Different Drum", it wasn't a Monkees song per se.
