Soundwave have some God awful bands too.
Love Mastodon and Karnivool, but they're not metal. It's all hip-hop or indie/alternative rock.
They should push Aussie talent like Eyefear, for starters.
Mastodon is progressive metal. Karnivool blur the lines between hard rock and metal, but similarly progressive.
Eyefear are pretty ordinary IMO, and certainly won't appeal to most BDO goers. Unfortunately Australia isn't really spoiled for choice with metal, as such its hard to secure acts that really have that much appeal. I would have liked to have someone like Cog on the bill again.
People have never gone to BDO for the metal, punk and grunge were massive in the 90's, the bills reflected it. Now indie, alt rock and hip hop are popular, as such that's where many of the major bands fit in.
I think i just got an idea for a thread...The Big Day Out lineup is generally a reflection of the music coming out that time. Generally a bad line up comes as a result of a poor year in music. In saying the line up isn't THAT bad, if anything the undercard is great with some real up and comers and the choice of local bands is fantastic (although for most of them, they're 5-10 years out of their prime). Of course for the vast majority of members on here aren't going to be impressed as they either grew up with another generation or they're into other genre's of music (or are sick of popular Aussie music). While it's a shame, I'm sure it what deter Lees and West from sticking to their formula that's proven succesful over the past number of years they've been using it.
The only thing this line up is missing is the reunited band from another generation (eg. Rage Against The Machine) and/or the over the hill rockstar (Iggy Pop, Neil Young). Honestly, I believe Soundwave beat them to the punch with the announcements of Faith No More and Janes Addiction. Along with Placebo, they all should be on Lees and West tour but because of the inspiring endeavour of the Soundwave organisers they've opted to join what is fast becoming one of the best festival experiences of the summer (if only they could work out some of the kinks aye?).
I would like to pose this question to the lot of you...
If you were to make a Big Day Out line up, a line up that consisted of the best alternative rock music, the best dance music and the best local artists. What would the bill look like? Try and be reasonable of course.
Karnivool's themata and persona both had elements that contained metal, although they sat on the edge of hard and progressive rock. Sound awake followed more the path of birds of tokyo than anything.I can agree with Mastodon, but, although I do like Karnivool, I cannot say that anything they have ever done even resembles metal.
Eyefear are ordinary. I won't argue that. But I'd rather pay to watch local talent than some of the stuff there.
I will say, though, that the BDO's biggest shows tended to include 'metal' acts (OK, nu-metal mostly). But they, once upon a time, attracted bands like Limp Bizkit, Korn, Fear Factory, Metallica, etc. Now I am not saying these are great bands (although the Factory were pretty kick-arse), but at least they had a different sound - Limp Bizkit sounded like Limp Bizkit, ditto Korn as Korn. To me, half the idie rock nowadays is interchangeable in terms of sound. It's bland.
And yes, I concede Soundwave can be awful.
LOL I was thinking the same thing when I read it, they're progressive metal, but they couldn't be classified as anything else other than metal.Mastodon aren't metal?? WTF are you smoking champ.
Agree on the line-up its crap.
Soundwave kicks its arse, however Mastodon are there so I will be there.
But I agree on Cog - along with The Butterfly Effect and Pscroptic they're some of Australia's best talent imo.

As for the metal bands you listed, all had massive mainstream appeal at the time (except for fear factory, which were a "surprise" band in 04, and played at 3 in the arvo). You can add System of a Down to the list as well. All of them were in the top 10 music charts at some point before they toured. I don't think there is one metal band that is even close to that right now, the rest of the bill's had very few metal bands on them. The festival reflects music tastes at the time generally, and lets face it... Metal isn't in at the moment. Indie rock has gained mass appeal in the last 3 years, and pretty much taken up the slots metal/punk would have had 5 or 6 years ago.
It doesn't really phase me, whilst I'm a massive metal head, my tastes have diversified and I like most genres now. Good luck finding a 15-21 year old that is into genuine metal and not metalcore or emo crap, and that is pretty much the target market for big day out mostly.

I have always really liked Cog. Been watching them live for years.
Unfortunately their last album sucks.
When I saw them live earlier this year they played all new stuff and hardly anything off New Normal and older.

Well, prog metal. But they're not hardcore, they're not punk, they're not rock (a la AC/DC or Jet)...Prog metal seems to fit the bill.
But whatever they are, Mastodon are awesome.
Absolutely. Although it's probably just me, but a 'bad' Cog album still beats stuff like Fall Out Boy, Gym Class Heroes and all the other generic rock out there imho.
No arguments from me.
I'm not up on all the 'core's used to describe heavy music anymore. Half the punk bands I hear on that short fast and loud show on the jjjs sound like metal bands to me.
Yeah I mean sucks in comparison to their old stuff. Its not horrible, i just found it very underwhelming - missing the power of their older material.
As for those other two bands you mention, I can honestly say I have never heard of them!
