Lineup needs Something for Kate and The Living End and then the snoozefest of Australian rock will be complete.

Guaranteed, everyone that goes will have a great time. But honestly the lineup could do with some better mainstream acts.

^^^^^^^^ totally agree

they put on the same aussie bands every second year its like theyre on rotation or something grinspoon this yr living end next yr???

im still going but only coz buying tickets for sideshows for bands im there to see will cost more all up than the bdo ticket itself

Mastodon - $70
rise Against - $70
Girl Talk - $60
Muse - $80

so may aswell see a whole day of music

im a bit disappointed in muse as headline act tbh, i liked it how they were 2nd on the bill when tool were headliners they should do something similar to that again (not sure of who would headline though) but honestly i hope powderfinger arnt the second headliner

Needless to say, it's quite an underwhelming lineup. Quite a few indie bands there and small local acts so I'm not even sure if there'll be a 3rd announcement. Miami Horror, The Scare, Hilltop Hoods and Phrase are the only bands that mildly pique my interest. The thing that scares me with such a mediocre announcement is that I may have to sit through Powderfinger and Jet before I see Muse.

2nd announcement seems a little thin... Although I always have a blast drunkenly dancing about to Jet during their usual slot somewhere between 3 and 7pm :D

Only annoyance for me this year is the 2nd show. Most of my useless mates missed out on the friday and are going to the saturday instead. Deciding on whether to trade for saturday tickets, or buy them from a scalper and go to both days.

I wouldn't admit to that if I were you. Personally, I'll be trying to get to a stage at it's furthest point away from Jet when they're playing. Worst band on the bill by far, and there is some terrible bands on the bill.

Well I already have, should I fear some sort of music nerd wrath?

Jet have a similar appeal to wolfmother or other equally rip off bands who just have good riffs in their songs.

More like Bland Day Out.

Has to be the most mediocre lineup in years. WHat happened to the variety, there always used to be a few punk bands, hell a metal band or two occasionally. Now its just sh*t.

Cant believe there were rumours of Rancid. Was hoping for a good local band like the rhomb or something similar on the bill as well but nope.

The Big Day Out lineup is generally a reflection of the music coming out that time. Generally a bad line up comes as a result of a poor year in music. In saying the line up isn't THAT bad, if anything the undercard is great with some real up and comers and the choice of local bands is fantastic (although for most of them, they're 5-10 years out of their prime). Of course for the vast majority of members on here aren't going to be impressed as they either grew up with another generation or they're into other genre's of music (or are sick of popular Aussie music). While it's a shame, I'm sure it what deter Lees and West from sticking to their formula that's proven succesful over the past number of years they've been using it.

The only thing this line up is missing is the reunited band from another generation (eg. Rage Against The Machine) and/or the over the hill rockstar (Iggy Pop, Neil Young). Honestly, I believe Soundwave beat them to the punch with the announcements of Faith No More and Janes Addiction. Along with Placebo, they all should be on Lees and West tour but because of the inspiring endeavour of the Soundwave organisers they've opted to join what is fast becoming one of the best festival experiences of the summer (if only they could work out some of the kinks aye?).

I would like to pose this question to the lot of you...

If you were to make a Big Day Out line up, a line up that consisted of the best alternative rock music, the best dance music and the best local artists. What would the bill look like? Try and be reasonable of course.

To be fair, that line-up says "You're not welcome" to any fans with taste...

I don't know about that. I think it's just trying to cater to too many types of crowds now.

Metal/Punk has:
Rise Against
Mastodon
Karnivool

Rock:
Muse
Powderfinger
Jet
Grinspoon
Kasabian

Hip Hop/Rap:
Hilltop Hoods
Phrase
GrillaStep

Indie/Alt Rock:
Lily Allen
Peaches
The Scare
The Middle East
Wagons
Mars Volta

The boiler room:
Various DJ's from different disciplines

I can't be bothered splitting every band up, but while there are some good artists in each category, no category has any true standouts, with the exception of Muse. It's just trying to cater to way too many genres, it seems to me the BDO organisers have lost focus. It's always been a mainstream event, but they always predominantly narrowed themselves down to 2 or 3 genres for the most part. What I do like about this lineup is that they've gone for some real quality not-so well known bands, so earlier in the day won't be a waste of time like it has been in previous years.

There's still plenty to see for me that I'll enjoy, but it's certainly nowhere near as good as years gone by. Soundwave Festival on the otherhand is really stamping itself as the "goto" event if they can get their service right.

Love Mastodon and Karnivool, but they're not metal. It's all hip-hop or indie/alternative rock.

They should push Aussie talent like Eyefear, for starters.

I will agree on Soundwave, though. Much better.
