Bird Contract

I really like Bird - he's a competitor and he's an attacking threat, a cracking all rounder, but he's not got a position that he owns.

He's not big enough for the pack long term, he's not skilful enough (particularly kicking game) and doesn't have the organisation skills for the halves, and I don't think he's safe enough at the back.

He doesn't have blistering pace, but he does cause havoc with his unorthodox running style/fend and off the cuff play. So he's the type of bloke who you just have to find a place in the team for - but he's not the sort of player you break the bank for in my opinion.

I think we've had excellent value for money from him, and I seriously doubt whoever is paying him his next contract will see anywhere near the same return on investment. There's also a chance based on the way he plays the game that he could get 'found out' once defences work out how to shut him down - there's an arguement that's already happening.

I suppose what I'm saying, is if we're looking at anywhere near $900k, I think we can get more bang for our bucks by looking elsewhere.
Excellent post.

Well for a bloke who is fighting for one of his biggest contracts in his career, I can't say he has been in any career defining form. I know it's only 5 weeks into the season but it seems he looks either disinterested or slightly hesitant since his elbow injury in the GF.

Good luck to him if he can get his 800k a season. As a shark fan I wouldn't want to see our club throwing that sort of money at him.
Agreed, has done nothing in the games this year that scream "sign me for $800k"

Frenzy.

Bird has a verbal agreement with Newcastle on a deal worth more than a Million a season, he is giving Cronulla a chance to get as close to the offer as possible.

Jeez thats a lot of cheese! I hope he stays but if he does he will want to step it up a gear or two to earn that cash.

Am I reading right that we are at around $850k? Reckon our lemon has been squeezed as much as possible.

Good luck to Jack if he can jag that million per season. Given the possibility that his career could be shortened cause of his arthritic issues...he'd be mad not to take that sort of coin. Still hope he stays for a lesser offer but happy for him either way.
