Bird signed to 2017 = Benji Staying to 2017??

Why would Jack Bird seriously sign a 1 year deal if he intended on staying at sharks long term??? He'll either announce a year deal, or 1 year deal and likely back to dragons once Benji finishes.

Bird / manager etc are hedging thier bets.

If he scorches it next year, dont be surprised to see a new contract tabled, and as many mentioned, new clubs in competition for him. If he suffers 2nd year itis, well .......

Fact is he signed until 2017, and like him, we should get on with life. A lot can happen in 1-2 years. Off season is an example lol

The real reason is that the Cap will change and if he signed longer he could miss out on a more lucrative contract. Think you will find a lot of players coming off contract 2017

Agree Mills. A lot of our contracts that he 2017 deadline as well. Makes sense. My point was / is, we need to get on with it as he has. he may extend at the Sharks, come back to the Dragons, or end up at the Chooks for all i know. For now anyway, he is a shark... we need to accept that.

I think alot will depend on how Cronulla performs next year, both on and off the field. Semi footy, added sponsors, desire to stay, etc.

2018 is a new era, though in many respects, the TPA's superseed that.

We don't need another 5/8 as long as Widdop is here. We need a genuine halfback when Benji goes.
Preferably one with FG experience. Elegey would be s good target.

Much to the disappointment of many, the earliest benji will go is at the end of 2017...
Once Gaz has re-signed, if, then we can say we have the 6 spot covered. All speculation at the minute, but things change by the hour.

For a guy who apparently bleeds red & white, his actions speak a very different story...

While Jack is entitled to get every last dollar from his contract & I can almost forgive him leaving Saints the first time 'under the guise' of lack of opportunity (esp with a limited window due to his condition), but to have negotiated this long "again", and then used it to bump up his Sharks contract.. tbh as one of his biggest supporters on here, im over the bloke.. happy to move onto other pastures...

We have no room for Jack at this point.

Jack will look after himself contractually and Saints no doubt will review whether they have a use for Jack when he is next off contract.

We are yet to see how he fairs in his second season of NRL.

He will struggle to play first grade next season with the squad the sharks have amassed

Where's the statement or confirmation he has signed?

I believe our roster is complete for 2016, I am sure Gaz knows more than all of us on this forum, his suggestion of shifting Widdop to fullback and playing McCrone @ number 7 is pretty spot on.

Gaz works for the media, not the club. Even if he did know the ins and outs, I doubt he would be stupid enough to leak the mail.

I don't see it. If they shifted Widdop to fullback and Mann into the halves I would understand. I'm pretty sure they see Mann as Benji's long term replacement. And Widdop is a very good fullback. But McCrone is a bloke that has had many chances and never grabbed them. Definitely a solid option off the bench. Covers all the triangle positions and is as tough as hell. Will suit the new culture. But starting half back?
