Now given that it has come out in this trial that Stewart wasn't all that drunk at the time of the event, what grounds did Gallop now have to suspend him for 4 matches last year? And will the Manly club now recieve there $100 000* back? Given it was handed out due to having him be drunk at a club function?

*Got that figure wrong at first. Apologies

Well hard not to get emotional as a eagles fan this kid has had his life thrown upside down, who know if he will ever get back to his best.
But justice been served, this dodgy f**king family including the old man(should have been sprayed on the sheets) get there arses sold to them.

Gallop REALLY showed his support for the club, this guy is a gutless wonder.

They were never fined $500,000, where did you get that figure from??? It was more like $100,000 for bringing the game into disrepute

Also it never said anything about Stewart "wasn't all that drunk" all it says in the article is:
In his own testimony, Stewart said the girl made advances towards him. He said she had approached him, asking "Are you Brett Stewart?" and if she had seen him on TV. He said he resisted when she tried to kiss him and denied making unlawful advances or forcing himself on her in any way.

If i was Manly and Stewart i'd just want to put this all behind them, forget about it and move on.

There should be a defimation case to come from all this. His name has been dragged through mud and someone is responsible for falsely acusing him.

I reckon they will just let it die off, he can now concentrate on playing next year and moving on with his life...

Yeah, no point putting it through the courts again. I'm not at all suggesting manly take the NRL to court, but jjust that the NRL got it wrong. It's been heavily alledged by numerous (both defence and crown) witnesses during the trial that he was not all that drunk at all.

No way there's a defamation case coming.

official statement from MWSE

The Manly Sea Eagles are pleased but not surprised that fullback Brett Stewart was today found not guilty of allegations that he sexually assaulted a 17 year old girl outside his Manly Vale home unit complex on March 6, 2009.

Today’s finding by a jury in the NSW District Court ends 18 months of anxiety for the 25 year old and his family.

Sea Eagles chairman Scott Penn said it had been a long drawn out period of waiting for all concerned.

“As a club we all knew the type of quality person Brett Stewart is and from day one of the allegations there was an insistence that like every Australian citizen he should be allowed to have his day in court.

“That has been a long time coming – particularly for his close knit family. They have been hurt by the allegations but believed in the justice system to deliver the right verdict and it has.

“We will give Brett and his partner Jamie Baker all the time they need to recover from the traumatic last year and a half.

“Since Brett Stewart arrived home from England and the successful 2009 World Club Challenge his life has been under intense scrutiny. Everyone at the Sea Eagles from the staff in the front office, the coaching staff, team mates, sponsors, members and supporters wish him well and a successful return from a long period out with injury to his famous number one jersey next season,” Mr. Penn said.

Stewart has only played six games in the NRL since the 2008 grand final triumph against Melbourne – five in 2009 and one in 2010 – because of knee problems.

He has played 118 games for the Sea Eagles and scored an incredible 98 tries including an average of one a game at his home ground Brookvale Oval.

NRL to court?

On what basis?

Its good to see once all the evidence is presented justice is done.

I dont know what Brett should do now , but is name was dragged through the mud.

If this girl still has mental issues then she needs to continue to get them soon to. Its sad how her issues affected someone innocent.

Well there were fines and a player suspended following unsubstantiated claims. Claims that we now know to be wrong. (On being drunk, not on the sexual assault). It's not court worthy at all, but an apology would be nice.

I still think the club will just want this buried...

Stewart and Watmough were both reprimanded by the NRL because of the alcohol, not the sexual assault. They were true and correct punishments issued in a previous season and I don't understand why an apology would be necessary when they did muck up.
