Brett Stewart found not guilty of sexual assault

In this case then wouldn't they have blackmailed him then and there instead of banging on neighbours doors and asking them to call the police then going off to hospital to collect physical evidence?

I understand what you are saying but I don't see how it would apply in this case. The family don't appear to be the ones who dragged the media into it and don't see how they prosper from it.

If they had run off to Today Tonight instead of the police, that is a different matter

Brett Stewart is a good boy, Manly fans insist

These nutcases cannot be serious :|

MANLY supporters say they will be devastated if Sea Eagles star Brett Stewart is guilty of an alleged sexual assault.
Fans of the NRL player are beginning to assemble at Dee Why police station where it is understood Stewart may make an official visit.
The Manly and Australian fullback was arrested on Friday evening following allegations that he sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl in the stairwell of a North Manly apartment block, after a season opening party the club held at The Many Wharf Hotel.
Stewart has denied the allegation.
He declined to be interviewed by police and was released without charge pending further investigation.
Antoinette Livoti arrived in her Sea Eagles colours to support Stewart - a man she says she has met many times over the years.
``Let's believe a man's side of it, that things can happen like that,'' Ms Livoti said.
But she did criticise the anti-social behaviour of some footballers and said they should curb their alcohol intake.
``Because they represent a good game, a family game, they shouldn't be doing what they're doing,'' she said.
``Because we want our little kids to follow into a sport that's good and healthy for them.''
Ms Livoti said Stewart was ``a good boy'' and she would be ``devastated'' if charges were laid against him.
Chris Court, 18, took advantage of a day off work to come to the police station with a few mates.
He believes Stewart to be innocent because he is so well-known in the sport.
``He's not really going to have to work too hard to pick up a bird,'' Mr Court said.
``I don't think he'd really have to do anything like that for a girl.
``There's got to be something else to it.''
The fans assembled as police continued their investigation, with detectives arriving at the girl's home in North Manly.

 @ the wankers turning up to the Police Station.

The people need to get a life, instead of living one by proxy via a football team. Fascinating how one can assess an individual's character, motivations and actions simply from the team he plays for and his footballing ability.

If it's true, f**k Manly, to be fair.

Again, if the allegations are proven (and Manly lose a player) it means a really terrible thing has happened to a young girl. Who really cares about the plight of a football team - any football team?

Hmm, I think she might have missed the bit where the incident occured in Stewart's street 8 hours after the function kicked off. And missed the bit that the girl was just outside her flats having a ciggie and never actually attended the launch...

She didn't miss anything just didn't bother to read.
As long as they play League and look like a Backstreet Boy they're innocent and the women are guilty as far as she's concerned!

As with any claim like this, the player and the police and who else is affected should go after the people who make false claims, other wise this will continue to happen and may happen more often in these times

Who is making a false claim here? There is a huge difference between someone making a claim that cannot be substantiated with sufficient evidence to support a criminal conviction, and nothing having happened.

If you were to go around charging people whose complaints ended up failing in court, the already miserably low level of reporting for rapes, would drop to almost zero. It is already a crime notoriously difficult to prove, because mainly it hinges around he says/she says with no other witnesses, and because there is mostly a very fine line between what is legal and not legal. There is already provision in the law for people making false and malicious complaints.

Given the level of reporting of rapes is already very low (<30% I think), I would expect the level of false reporting to be a minimal sub-fraction of that, like 0.0001%. Yet there is an almost automatic supposition in forums like this one that the rate of false reporting by women when a football player for the team they support is accused, is approximately 100%.

Why would any woman in her right mind make a false allegation against a footballer? They must know they will be in the spotlight, there will be intense media interest, the club will close ranks around the accused and provide him with essentially unlimited legal and other resources to support him, her reputation and character will be dragged through the mud, and she will get zero sympathy from his team's fans and if her identity leaks out, she will become a figure of at least ridicule and possibly more by some of the more Cro-Magnon fans all teams seem to have. And if by some chance she is willing to do this, and submit herself to what is a very high risk course of action, her cunning plan will get her what? Millions, hundreds of thousands ... now way, maybe $25-50k at max. Who would think that is worth all the trouble?
