Brisbane rates - simple. We're the most recognised brand in Australian sport.

Having said that, Broncos fans are just as annoyed as the rest of you at basically only having Friday nights to go watch our team play live. It means I can't take my kids, who are too young to be up that late.
Well, we're not given much of an option are we?

• Broncos – Australia’s Most Widely Supported Sporting Club
The latest Roy Morgan Research has named the Broncos as Australia’s most widely supported sporting club, with the Broncos returning to number one and being the first NRL team to hold the top spot since 2004. The Broncos have 1.259 million supporters, overtaking AFL club the Sydney Swans (1.22 million supporters).
• Broncos – Most Supported NRL Team
The 2009 Roy Morgan poll confirmed the Brisbane Broncos as the most supported and popular NRL team with 1.259 million supporters. The Broncos are followed by Melbourne Storm with 826,000 fans. St George Dragons have the third largest NRL supporter base with 462,000 and Parramatta Eels recorded the fourth highest with 429,000 supporters.

Any survey that returns an answer other than "Collingwood" for the most supported AFL team is obviously up the putty. I look forward to the day the Swans draw 90,000 for a regular season game. The Swans and Storm figures are over-inflated for the same reason: they are the only team in a massive city where the sport they play is very much a minor sport. People will say they support them in surveys like this, but many of them would have never bothered to watch a full game.

The Broncos figure I believe, because they draw support from large swathes of Queensland, not just Brisbane itself, and it is rugby league country.

Sheer supporter numbers are irrelevant though. It's the potential value of those supporters that matters: how many of them will pay for memberships, go to games, buy merchandise, or watch games on TV? Rugby league clubs in general lag way behind on the first two compared to AFL clubs, and front what I've observed, on the third as well. AFL supporters will buy anything with their club's logo/colours on it, no matter how silly. I know the Broncos would kill for the crowd and membership numbers the West Coast Eagles have (in a city with half the population and a cross-town rival to boot). And even the Broncos media saturation doesn't match what the Eagles get, from what I've heard.

The nuts and bolts of it is that while league has AFL covered in terms of total supporter numbers, AFL supporters are far more dedicated and contribute far more in a direct financial fashion to their teams.

I would rather take less money in the next tv deal to make sure that the NRL gets to set the draw at the start of the season. Most people seem to care more about a pissing comp with the afl rather then getting a TV deal that is better for all clubs not just Broncos.

This. The WCE also have a membership churn rate that is tiny, most teams have fairly big ones (especially when there is no scramble for ticketed membership due to seats a plenty).

RL administrators have been massively lax in getting people to games and signing up for memberships but the membership trend will hopefully continue upwards.

The NRL regularly outsells the AFL on merch though, I don't know if it is due to multiple teams (say Souths + NSW + Kangaroos) or the fact that the jerseys change more as a general trend so people keep buying to keep up. I say a big chunk is people who watch from home but still buy merch to feel a part of the team.

Heres a solution. 1 friday night game only this time round please ARLC. That way they cant show the Broncos every week as people in this state will turn off in big numbers and they know it.

Just like every sports league in the world the most popular/top/highest rated teams get the most coverage. There's a reason the Lakers/Heat/Celtics/Magic/Bulls/Mavs get the most nationally televised games during the NBA season and the same in the NFL. Major market teams get the SNF and MNF games.

Friday on their minds: clubs want fixed schedule
March 14, 2012

BRISBANE have been given a huge advantage on and off the field, with the club scheduled to play on Friday night for the opening eight weeks of the competition - a run that is likely to continue until State of Origin.

The decision by Channel Nine to choose Brisbane for its Friday night coverage on a weekly basis has heightened calls for fixed season-scheduling to be part of the next broadcast deal, while boosting claims for a second Brisbane team.

Rival officials say a seven-day turnaround makes a massive difference to Brisbane's preparation for matches, while being on Channel Nine every Friday night enables the Broncos to attract greater corporate support - a fact highlighted by Cronulla's lack of a major sponsor.

''It's a massive factor in the Broncos' favour,'' a trainer from a rival club told the Herald. ''Knowing that they play every Friday night allows them to have a regimented preparation … The Broncos would have a recovery session on Saturday morning and their players could then have the rest of the weekend off.''

In contrast, Manly opened their premiership defence by travelling to play the Warriors in a replay of last season's grand final, then backed up five days later against Wests Tigers. The Sea Eagles play on Monday at Cronulla and do not have another Friday night game until round eight - but at least they have some exposure on free-to-air television.

With the Broncos-Titans round-eight clash set to be confirmed for April 27, the Sharks are the only club yet to receive a Friday night match - and they are also the only club without a major sponsor.

''Obviously having free-to-air games makes it much easier when you sit in front of sponsors,'' Cronulla chairman Damian Irvine said. ''We are right at the pointy end of signing a sponsorship deal, and we will do that, but it is no longer a case of sponsors wanting to throw a name on a jersey and being happy to use you as a billboard.

''They want to know exactly what your media monitoring situation is … exactly what your coverage is for free-to-air and pay TV. It is double-pronged because they don't only want to know that in deciding whether they choose you over another club or another sport, they also want to know that as to how much value they actually place on the position once they decide they are going with you - so in that light, free-to-air games are absolute gold.''

Manly boss David Perry said it was no coincidence the Broncos are by far the most profitable club in the NRL, with a turnover of about $30 million per season. ''When you are getting free-to-air TV games scheduled weekly, your TV viewership numbers are significantly higher … so to a potential investor, we are significantly disadvantaged,'' he said.

As a result, both Irvine and Perry believe each club should get a set number of Friday night games as part of the next TV deal.

''Hopefully all clubs can be on a fair playing field going forward because it clearly hasn't been equal historically,'' Perry said.

However, neither Channel Nine sports boss Steve Crawley or NRL football operations director Nathan McGuirk made any apology for the Broncos being consistently chosen for Friday night matches.

''It is one of the aims of Channel Nine that one of the two free-to-air games on Friday night is a game with some Queensland content they can show live into Queensland, and they are choosing the Broncos clearly to maximise ratings,'' McGuirk said. ''Last year the Broncos had 16 Friday night games … it will probably be about the same this year.''

Crawley said Channel Nine would support the admission of a second Brisbane team playing out of Suncorp Stadium.

''They have got the best stadium in the world and if you could have a game coming out of there every week that would be great for rugby league and great for the broadcaster,'' he said. ''Queensland is a big part of our game and they have only got three teams at the moment, so, from a broadcaster's point of view, having an extra team in Queensland would be a wonderful thing.''

Dogs, Manly set for Friday grudge match

Channel Nine executives and Bulldogs officials expect the bitter first clash between Des Hasler's new Canterbury side and the Manly team he steered to the 2011 premiership to attract huge interest, with the match scheduled for Friday, April 27. While the NRL is yet to announce the round eight schedule, the Herald understands the Bulldogs-Sea Eagles clash at ANZ Stadium has been pencilled in for a Friday night free-to-air game since Manly sacked Hasler after he announced he was joining Canterbury. The Broncos-Titans derby at Suncorp Stadium will be the live game in Queensland. Canterbury officials are hoping for a crowd of 40,000 for the match against the Sea Eagles, who have started the season like they finished last year with wins over the Warriors in Auckland and the Tigers at Gosford.

Don't thinks so mate. They're not even the most recognised in Rugby League, Souths or the Dragons are.

Disagree.

Ask the average Victorian who Souths or St George are and many wpuldnt know.

Ask them who the Broncos are however...

there are 13 other teams in the comp what does friday night football have to involve a qld team for (most times the bronco's) in any case- are you saying brisbane/qld wont watch any game not involving brisbane or the other 2 QLD teams?- Brisbane are getting preferential treatment over the other 15 teams in being able to attract more sponsorship because of being on tv virtually every week and having the luxury of 7 days between games which no doubts gives them an unfair advantage in relation to preparing for the next game and treatment of players injuries whose injuries if only a 4 or 5 day turnaround would rule them out but being 7 they are able to play. time for the commission to step in and allocate the games fairly and evenly across friday/saturday/sunday/monday for all clubs. just remember channel 10 is in the bid and 7 for SOO so the commission can demand equity in tv game allocations.

The bold part wont work for one simple reason, ratings. What channel is going to agree that no matter how poor the ratings they will show what they are told to show? As pointed out the Broncos are the biggest tv draw card in the NRL, like it or not people tune in to watch them play on friday nights more than any other club.

I could only wish the Broncos could get some games on a Satuday, Sunday or Monday. Blame Channel 9 and the NRL.

Most Victorians are so insular that they couldn't point out Brisbane on a map

Pretty much sums up the sentiment, but try telling that to Donkos fans

People are claiming it as special treatment, it's not, it's all about ratings. As said a few times the Broncos prefer to play on sundays, but get only 1 or 2 Sunday games a year. No one is denying the advantages of playing friday nights, or shouldn't be, but don't blame the club, or it's fans, and don't expct the NRL to get as much for the tv rights if the station involved doesn't get a say in the games they show.

You do realise you are saying that to someone who is a victorian, lives in victoria and who follows both afl and nrl, I think it's safe to say he would be alot closer to right than you would be on this one.

The ratings argument doesn't hold too much water. Fact is rugby league supporters in general will watch whatever teams are playing. Even though people complain about having to watch the donkeys go round yet again, they still tune in to friday night footy. For those that aren't prepared to watch whatever gets dished up they'd be the ones already switching their tvs off every time the Donkeys come up. How many casual RL supporters in the Shire, Penrith or Canberra are watching friday night footy currently?
