The Raiders getting a handful of players from QLD over there 40 years of existence is just such an nonsense in respect of this topic.

Are the Cowboys wrong for signing Hamiso, Luki and Nanai from the Cairns and District RL?

Exactly mate. Every club sources talent from wherever they can get it.

i can see where GROTD is coming from. Brisbane is underrepresented compared to Sydney in the NRL but we are now supposedly a national comp and need to be looking nationally, not just NSW/QLD. The time to fix that imbalance has long past, it should have happened in the 90s but it didn't. No point bemoaning something that can't be changed now. The NRL has built a narrative out of of the existing teams we've been left with and if you're not happy with it then don't follow it.

You could debate whether QLD would have won 11 out of 12 Origin series if their players weren't so concentrated within a few teams - Broncos, Storm, Cowboys

The point that seems to be missed, is that some of us think that the next expansion should be ambitious and show that the game has a vision to be a truly national sport.

If after 30 years of doing nothing, if all RL expansion amounted to was 3 new teams in SEQ, then that's hardly going to sell the game as anything more then insular and a regional two state sport.

This view is not an attempt at 'death riding' nor some slight on Boomers who long for the days of 5000 blokes sinking cans at Davies Park.
Some of them need a good slighting frankly.

The stranglehold that a handful of old blokes have held over the game for the last 40-50 years is having major impacts on it. Guys like Gould, Politis, John McIntyre as a Canberran example, etc, etc, do more damage than good at this point and need to be moved on to make space for new ideas and voices.

I never suggested that a team should be called the Brisbane Swordfish.

That's such a random thing to make up lol.

Three years ago you suggested Brisbane Sawfish instead of Dolphins.

Here's the post.

I've been thinking about an alternative brand for the Dolphins for a while now.

So I thought about it and decide it needs to fit a few parameters; firstly it needs to maintain an aquatic animal theme, secondly it needs to make sense for the Brisbane market, thirdly it needs to be unique in major professional sports, and most importantly it needs to be at least as marketable as a Dolphins brand.

Anyway after some further thought I cam up with a bunch of ideas but, IMO, one stood out- the Sawfish.

Sawfish are charismatic, and badass, aquatic animals, that no other major sporting franchise that I know of is using as their mascot.

They used to be common in the Brisbane river until as recently as in the 50s, however due to habitat destruction, over fishing, and pollution they've seemly gone extinct in the Brisbane river (the odd unconfirmed sighting in the Brisbane River still pop up from time to time). That opens up massive marketing opportunities by getting involved with, and helping to raise money for, conservationist that are trying to grow sawfish populations in Australian waters.

Use a logo that looks something like this-
sawfish-86296750.jpg

Call them the Brisbane Sawfish, and Bob's your uncle you've got the makings of a brand that is just as marketable as Dolphins, but isn't going to alienate people like the Dolphins inevitably would.

Brisbane can support one more side at least

if easts get involved with png then it’ll be 1.5 more sides

The most recent posts here have articulated what I've been feeling about expansion for years, since the wholesale slaughter of clubs between late 1997 & 2000.

The NRL has very little ambition outside NSW & now Queensland. As a fan of the game in New Zealand, it's frustrating enough - but I can only imagine the feelings of the sports' followers in Perth & Adelaide who HAD top tier teams, only to see them slashed within a handful of years.

That's like buying a lemon tree seedling, planting it, then turfing it out after a week because it has no fruit!

I'd go as far to say that the next TWO teams should be outside NSW/Qld - Perth for sure as 18, then NZ 2 or Adelaide for 19 - before looking at Brisbane 3 for the 20th team.

How about the NRL picks the best bids?!

U advocate for superleague which was the thinking in 90's.

U can be national without teams in every state. The only football series with national interest in Australia is origin which has only NSW & qld teams

Yeah, like I said, I never suggested that a team be called the Brisbane Swordfish. You gonna apologise now or just pretend like you weren't making shit up again?

Sawfish would be amongst the coolest brands in Australian sport if you did it right, but we don't do unique and interesting in Australia anymore. We're too busy pretending that mimicking Americans or Europeans makes you cultured to do anything unique anymore, it's really sad actually.

I think your knitpicking on swordfish vs sawfish, either way brisbane firehawks sucked, and since you love your local fauna, you're gonna have to swallow 2 failed concepts... as much as i hate agreeing with that deadshit from logan, you've come up with a concept that they wouldn't ever be interested in, especially since "dolphins" were already there branding since 1947.. it was always goning to be at the forefront of their bid to transcend from QRL to NRL under that mascot

Dane is either a moron or a troll. Said 2nd Brisbane team could be called "the smiths"
That's not true either.

Neither is that.

It's weird that certain people feel it's necessary to make shit up about me.

Sure, but you can't be national without having a significant presence in every major market.

The NRL's market share outside of NSW, Qld, and the ACT is abysmal, the only way you change that is by investing in growth in those markets. The way you're going to see significant growth in WA, SA, and VIC is through expansion.
