Distance is relative. People in Cairns who support the cowboys don't care about the distance.

They won't just support a Pasifika side because its on their doorstep.

The Pasifika concept has been devised by some bureaucrat stuck in a cubicle somewhere whose knowledge of how the world works comes from Google.
Again its just a base of operations, a training field on Australian soil... maybe a few token home games or trials, the idea is to globetrott the team to the islands, not create a cowboys V.2, not sure how or why everyone is hung up on cairns being the base... its holiday city, just like gold coast, if the govt weren't pushing for it, cairns would never be an option, its basically a port

I don't see the corporate support being in Cairns

Trial or one home game in cairns

will also help png attract Australian sponsors

Players and coaching staff too, its not only about raw pasifika rookies getting a streamline to the NRL, need the senior players to guide them too... the club wont be operational just to have them losing every week just coz they have to have an islander halfback... maybe they will, but a ben hunt, sean O'Sullivan, or james maloney led team, is better set up in cairns, rather than in suva fiji, or port moresby
Besides little wayne dont like to live outside of qld these days

People said Townsville wouldn't work, they had a population of 113,000 when they came in in '95, almost 3 decades later, theyve become one of the best regional examples of a sporting club powerhoise and even just recently had a stadium built for them,
Right now cairns is at 172,000, and Townsville 4 hours drive south is at 195,000... its not a big stretch.. besides its base of operations, no one is forcing the locals to play for the Pasifika over the cowboys... i mean if the northern pride are happy to link with them then so be it, but the idea is to bring in an ensemble squad from the islands of the Pacific and PNG and train and live in Cairns, but play at their respective islands all at the govt expense
Cowboys are in townsville... 4 hours drive south
As much as that seems ok... its really not, its like saying Wollongong and Newcastle are supporting the same team... south sydney take more games to cairns than the cowboys do, whats that say about that club?

Its an hours flight to port moresby from cairns, not too far, anywhere where else creates vast distance, dont let the Pasifika angle fool you this is about PNG... theyve only recently roped in the pasifika angle

The Cowboys survived because they represent the entire NQ region, and draw supporters, sponsors and players from this region, not just Townsville. (MT Isa in the West, Cairns in the north and Mackay to the south)

They are far from a "powerhouse" having needed to be bailed out once by News Ltd and another time by their local Council and with an all time winning percentage around 40% and 3 spoons since 95.

Cairns is not capable of supporting an NRL club on its own, and certainly isn't ahead of major metropolitian areas. The QLD govt isn't going to fork out $350M+ for a stadium when there is one in Townsville.

Once again, there is NO Pasifika bid, there is no Cairns bid so not sure where all this bullshit is coming from.

If they're not playing games in Port Moresby than they could be called anything and have just as much claim to being a 'PNG team'.

Again I say - Perth will have 3.7 million people in 20 years. Cairns will have 350k. Why would you go to Cairns before Perth? Even the Sunshine Coast will have a population of 600k.

But they are playing games in PNG a lot of games, thats the reason for this team... what is escaping from your brain here....
All home games are being played in the islands and png... maybe a few games/trials in cairns

The home base could be noumea ffs and not cairns, it could've been suva or Auckland, makes no f**king difference.. its just somewhere to be based.., show is on the road
What arent you all getting here

They'll be home games in port moresby, suva, apia, nuka'alofa, cook islands perhaps, maybe the odd Auckland

Where are all these NRL standard fields coming from? What about broadcast facilities and coverage?

What a shocking model for a professional sports team to be a nomadic team with no home base, and have every game being an away game (who is going to want to play for them?)

I've spent time in PNG. Not just in Port Moresby but in lots of smaller villages too. I'll say what I've said before - it's a dangerous place.

The only way it will work hosting games there is if you build a new stadium that has a riot exclusion zone built around it. I'm talking large unscalable walls built out of solid blocks - not some rinky dinky chain fest. It needs to withstand 5000+ trying to flood the site because that is 100% going to happen and people would die in the stampede. And within that zone there's an accommodation centre for visiting teams. Getting around Port Moresby itself can be an absolutely nightmare. And even then I would say that at some point, there will some kind of violence that still occurs that the media will pin on the NRL. There's really no way of fully stopping it.

And if you're doing all that, then why do you need Cairns at all? Or any of those other tiny pacific island towns.

Wrong thread i know but these Pasifika players won't be coming from the Pacific.

They'll be coming from Minto, Blacktown, Ipswich, etc. And they won't all be Pacific Islanders. Or Papuans.

So going on an island hop with players who aren't from those Islands and basing them in Cairns when they aren't from Cairns is lunacy.

Or if they are coming from the Pasifika they are going to be flogged every week because they are nowhere nearNRL standard.

And I won't get started on the madness of relocating a player from Fiji to Cairns and then putting them on a plane every week to a different island and culture which is not their own.

The concept is flawed with a capital F.

It would be. It is a ridiculous argument to make but I listened to an interview with this bid chair and he was talking about the fumblers having their academy in SW Brisbane

I wonder if AFL got stressed about the mention of a Mealbourne2 NRL team? Seriously of all the reasons to choose an area to expand to, fighting AFL off in our own heartlands should be at the bottom of the list!
