The only thing I find strange about this is he has been suspended by the Bulldogs. If it is just gambling and drinking problems wouldn't they say something like "He's taking a leave of absence from the game to sort out his personal problems" rather than a suspension?

Hope he sorts himself out and gets the help he needs.

Whatever the issue is, it's between he and his family, friends and club.

Haven't read the entire thread, but has anyone speculated that he might've tried to commit suicide? I mean this seems really drastic and the way the Bulldogs were saying things like "ill" and "needs professional help" kind of led me to believe he might've.

Pretty f**king insensitive to suspend him then!

Surely it would be "granted a leave of absence" etc.

From the clubs press release:

The decision to suspend Ben indefinitely comes after the Club was informed of a number of behavioural issues.

If he has personal issues I truly hope he takes the time and recovers , He is sensational to watch.

If by any chance he has done something criminal then he's blown a promising career and should be punished according.

I hope to see him back on the field sometime soon

Rightfully so, there's a limit and boundaries on what should be said regarding this situation. The forums rules and regulations exist for a reason.

I know there's a thread but this isn't about Ben Barba being stood down, it's about what's different between Benny Barba and the other stars.

Let's look at them closely:

  1. Greg Inglis stood down after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend - so GI was in the wrong regardless of what happened.
  2. Brett Stewart stood down by the NRL for allegedly assaulting the girl who lived in the same complex as he did. Yes, we know that this case was thrown out of court, and Stewart was hard done by and the NRL had no right to suspend him and did owe him an apology (in my opinion), but it was for the wrong reasons (he was drunk).
  3. Benji Marshall, while he was probably a victim, was not so smart by being out at McDonalds in the city on hi own in the early hours of the morning.
  4. And now... BEN BARBA... has REQUESTED to be stood down by the club for his own personal reasons. He did not do any wrong, and wants time to get over the break-up of his long term girlfriend, and the mother of his 2 children. Now we don't know all the details, but if I was to take a guess, I would say that his now ex-girlfriend has packed up and moved back to Queensland, meaning that Barba will not have to get used to being away from his kids, and this is heavily impacting on him. What about the All stars game, you ask? I'm guessing because he was in Queensland, he would've gotten a chance to see his kids and this would've lifted his spirits.

Re. Point 4 - He did not ask to be stood down. He has been suspended as stated by the Bulldogs press release which reads:

"The decision to suspend Ben indefinitely comes after the Club was informed of a number of behavioural issues."
