Cap disaster: Eels have no room to rebuild

New coach Daniel Anderson’s plans to haul Parramatta back to the top of the NRL ladder are in turmoil following revelations the club is already flirting with salary cap disaster in 2010.

Anderson and other members of the football club fronted the new Leagues Club board last night and presented a dire financial situation that means the struggling Eels will again be only bit-part players in the transfer market for the second year in a row.

So worrying is the situation that while much was made of Brett Finch’s apparent run-in with Anderson, his request for a release was actually seen as a godsend in the front office where the number-crunchers were expecting major cap dramas beyond 2009.

Even with the extra $300,000 freed by Finch’s departure the Eels remain right on the cusp as they struggle to retain the likes of young props Tim Mannah and Josh Cordoba – a problem exacerbated by the back-ended contract previously offered to captain Nathan Cayless.

New Leagues Club chairman Roy Spagnolo – who swept to power as part of the rebel ticket that ousted the old board late last month – was reluctant to discuss details when contacted but confirmed that a meeting had been held at Parramatta Leagues Club last night.

“They (the football office) let the board know where we are at with player retention and the upgrading of certain players,” he said, admitting that the situation is far from ideal.

“I was a little bit aware of it, probably moreso than some of the other guys, but it will be okay.”

A source close to the Eels camp told NRL.com that Anderson and his staff faced an uphill battle in their efforts to piece together the remnants of a disastrous 2008 season and what he described as some poorly thought-out retention and recruitment decisions.

“Daniel Anderson has inherited an absolute disaster,” the source said. “I think the board was quite shocked last night because some of the things that they had heard previously were a bit of a misnomer.

“The place was a shemozzle.”

Parramatta fans have already vented their frustration at the club’s plight by voting the old board out but will almost certainly have to bide their time before any dreams of a bright new future become reality.

Having already been priced out of negotiations with the likes of Dragons back-rower Ben Creagh, Spagnolo said it remained unclear whether the Eels could afford to bring in much fresh blood for next season.

“It just depends,” he said. “I guess as time goes on we’ll know more about where we go from here but as for the presentation it was very informative and answered a lot of the questions that we had.”

Instead, the Eels look set to focus once again on retention rather than recruitment with veteran back-rower Joe Galuvao set to be offered a new one-year deal with the club.

Seemingly on the scrapheap as recently as last season – when he admitted he was happy to play out the remainder of his current deal for feeder club Wentworthville – the 30-year-old has already played as many NRL games this season as he did in 2008 and is enjoying a new lease on life under Anderson’s rule.

“He is really enjoying his football again,” said his manager, Allan Gainey, after Galuvao was forced out of South Sydney 18 months ago.

“He has a good rapport with the coach who has given him a lot of confidence and told him that he is an important part of the team.

“Souths flicked him up to the Queensland Cup which had him down in the dumps but he has come a long way since then.”

The Eels have been talking to Dragons prop Justin Poore although his signing is now unlikely.

Penrith duo Matthew Bell and Keith Peters are also in the club’s sights with the hooking role at the top of Parramatta’s list of priorities.

so, who is accountable for getting us in this mess?
If it was Hagan and DF, well they have payed the price.

And now moving on, who is going to put their hand up and take responsibility for the future? I take Anderson is responsible for which players are approached or retained but who advises on the financial aspect of it all.

Great. And I was optomistic that we would sign a couple of forwards.
So I take it if Funch stayed we would have lost Moimoi and possibly more.

Andrew Hill is another that should be held accountable.

This say alot. We have Matt Keating and Kingston, yet we are looking at more hookers. But who are these two nuffies?

FFS what a mess

One can only hope that a few players decide that it is in their best interests to move on earlier than planned, to let some new blood into the joint.

Also, isn't there several players only contracted for this year? Their futures (apart from Joe) look to be shakey at best.

For a start, why are we looking to re-sign Cordoba?

Secondly, the current lineup fitting into a $4 million dollar cap is laughable to the extreme and only further highlights the ineptitude of the outgoing board. Most of the lineup are at best fringe players yet they are seemingly being paid as regulars or better.

I don't see Keith Peters or Matthew Bell as being much better than what we already have either.

Bring on 2011.

The over paid players (Cayless, i'm looking at you) will hopefully step up and show some ticker and justify why they are being paid as much as they are.

Maybe Parra should look to shop Inu around, i imagine he is on a bit of coin and his form for Parra has not been great(along with many other players) and he is playing for Wenty(costly reserve grader). Maybe sell him off to Souths, they seem to be able to buy every player under the sun and still remain under the cap.

i admit that Joe is playing well, but jez, why is he being offered a one year deal, blood one the young players and see how they go, instead of offering contracts to players passed their used by date.

Anyway,

GO THE EELS.

FMD Hagan should hang his head in shame.

Gronk, i'm certainly not big noting myself nor do I have the pleasure of telling you that I told you so, but can you now understand where I was coming from with my critisism of Andrew Hill and others in the past??

We'll be feeling the effects of Hagan for quite some time IMO...he royally f**ked us with his mind boggling recruitment and retention practices, and this is pretty damning in that regard. The fact that we, seemingly without the guys off contract at the end of the year, are already pushing the cap for next season with the nuffies we have is ludicrous and totally down to his insane contracts...

I just hope that the board and the fan base are patient with Anderson, we need him to be coaching us with a good side. It'll take him a few seasons to fix this mess and I hope he isn't made a scapegoat sometime down the track for inheriting a train wreck from his incompetent predecessor.

Well from what I'm hearing the deal being offered to Joe isn't huge by any means so I don't think he is one of the players hurting the cap.

Only makes it more important to expose the likes of Marty Lewis, Tim Robinson, Jeremy Latimore, James Grehan, Jono Wright and Greg Nuchols to first grade over the coming months. Provided we even have the cash to keep any of them.

They have identified this as the problem, then get on with fixing it.

As good as Caylo has been, if his back ended contract is responsible for keeping us in the bottom half of the ladder, then its time to re negotiate.

I dont believe this is an easy fix, but something has to be done.
